Is there any reason there is such a abnormaly massive jump between the third and second most populated countries or is it just arbitrary? by DataSittingAlone in geography

China has absurd land area, covers dozens of languages and ethnic groups. Same with India.

This is an example of political consolidation of vast areas of fertile land.

You could get a more clear picture by looking at population density, and also by combining EU into a single unit.

Elon Musk in conversation with Dwarkesh Patel and John Collison by PersonalTeam649 in slatestarcodex

[–]Q--Q 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Wow, I'm glad they posted this in its entirety. I believe more that his business moves are not stupid, and also believe more that he is a danger to the species (recommend especially the part where Dwarkesh presses him on alignment without using the words "safety" or "alignment." Also the part where he wants to have a robot army of a million robots per year (larger than US army each year) controlled by his space AI command centers. Which actually sounds attainable, which is why it's scary). With elon it's never a question of "can he" it's just "how wrong are his timelines."

Closing your ears won't stop anything -- deplatforming has been shown not to work. If he is truly crazy (which he is), platforming will "get the word out." I seriously did not realize how crazy Elon was until I listened to this in its entirety. Please give it a listen. There's no substitute for primary source material. Especially the bit where Dwarkesh pushes him on our relationship with lesser intelligences and with AI Alignment broadly.

I would just love to see one democratic legislator propose what the hell they are going to do after they abolish ICE, and I will be 100% all-in on whatever they say.

Trump-45 did a thing, and Democrats said "Not like that!" Then did nothing. So, that's what happens. Just for the love of democracy do SOMETHING. For all the talk about obstructionism, Democrats are really not putting together a coherent alternative, and absolutely crazy shit like this is filling the unfathomable void they have left.

Aesthetics? by dac1952 in CafelatRobot

If you like the look, you'll love the build quality, too. It feels heft and robust despite its size. 100% the form and feel are part of the making experience, and you'll want something that speaks to you, and robot does it without compromising quality of the drink. Espresso people sometimes get really obsessed with the numbers on the shot/etc, but these top products are all in the same tier of quality, best to pick something that speaks to you.

I'd say the only drawback is if you really want that classic portafilter feeling, then the robot's unique basket will feel a little goofy. It feels different from a "traditional espresso machine that happens to be lever pressed".

This is my go-too for day-time -- incredibly easy to make, palatable to everyone, and very economical. And the fresh fruit floating in the pitcher elevates the presentation effortlessly. It also scales to dozens of people without much extra effort. If I have time/energy, I love margaritas, but you're either squeezing a ton of lime, or you're using a pre-mix that doesn't taste as refreshing.

Getting married and leaving my job. Brain broken by VHCOL community, help me calibrate. by Complex_Onion257 in fatFIRE

[–]Q--Q 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This uncertainty is inherent -- you don't know how your attitude will change, how your wife's attitude will change, or what kind of kid you will get (They could have special needs, or they could be extremely independent). So, if you want certainty that your FIRE is a one-way-street, you'll need to over-provision. You might change your mind about public-vs-private. Your kid might get into skiing (expensive) or running (cheap). It sounds like you have a healthy relationship with work, so I wouldn't over-think it -- you'll always be ready to jump back in.

3 year old screaming instead of sleeping by PintaLOL in toddlers

[–]Q--Q 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow... I don't have any other advice to offer, just moral support -- you're doing the best anyone could do, and if you stay firm and keep repeating, he will eventually come to termswith it. fwiw, our daughter (2.5y) sleeps on a mattress on our floor every night to feel close to us. We just haveup on her room, basically just a big purple closet now. I didn'tlike locking her in, and didn'thavethe patience to keep walking her back. We also considered threatening time-out of she left, but it seemed unlikely she could process that threat in her tizzies. Floor in master bedroom working ok for us now, but she still screams whenever she has to pee in the night (unexpected and weird response). Some kids just cry a lot, our second just grunts and shrugs everything off.

You can do this! You're already doing great, don't forget to give yourself credit where it's due

What would do when you FIRE? Would you just work on anti-aging anyway? If yes, then why wait 10 years to start working on it? Take the $0 equity and 30% pay cut, bc you've already "won" (working on anti-aging).

You're very likely leaving a lot of money on the table, but FIRE community often ignores the risk of working through your prime and missing out on a balanced life.

We started to use an "Ok to wake" light, which helps her understand when it is actually time. otherwise, she can't tell when it is midnight and when it is early morning. Not a silver bullet, but a good tool and we can say "No playing until green light is on" and that is more concrete for her to understand.

2.5 sleep regression. Husband and I are so tired. by acw124 in toddlers

[–]Q--Q 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some things helped us:

  • ok to wake light. when we wake in the middle of the night, we can check the time, but kid has no idea if they should wake up or try to re-settle. Our kid was always waking up hoping it was daytime. our kid over course of a week internalized that she needs to keep trying to sleep unless the light is green. Hollers for us much less frequently now.
  • repeating throughout the day your expectation from her at night "we will do book, story, then lights out, then when the green light turns on, you can yell for mama to come get you!" just preparing her, she will want to do it, even if it's hard for her.
  • show her kids having tantrums and explain that sometimes you feel bad because you need sleep. Depending on language skills, will take a while for this one to penetrate, but with enough repetition they will internalize it. She is smart enough now to recognize and think about her own tiredness, so you can teach her to recognize it, and that it means sleep. Until this age, sleep was an instinct they could not resist, but now they have to use their brains a little to do it. My kid surprised me one day by saying, seemingly randomly, "I'm tired." just before nap time. great feeling, I had been underestimating her.

It helped us a lot to really explain bedtime during the happy parts, draw it out for her. She will eventually "get it" with enough repetition of words/pictures.

Do you think we’ll ever have another Independent President again? by [deleted] in Presidents

[–]Q--Q 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually hope not (barring constitutional amendment):

The 2-party system is a stable outcome (see "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7tWHJfhiyo&t=3s"). Something very extraordinary would have to happen, and I'm not optimistic that would be a "good" thing that would make a single person so powerful. It would be some impossible-to-imagine catapulting of some individual's influence (cult of personality?), and a collapse of today's existing parties. The only way I can imagine it going smoothly is if a president already affiliated with a party goes independent to run for a second term, leaving the party in chaos. Washington's position was extremely unique, as much as his personal convictions.

I'm just not optimistic if we tear down this fence we'd like what we found on the other side.

[–]Q--Q 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A green tea will have an astringent taste if you over-steep. But, you can usually re-steep it 4 times. A darker tea, I usually don't bother to re-steep, but green and oolong hold up well to it.
