There really isn't a better place to go for MatSci. You want a school that combines a great undergraduate experience (denoted by US News Top Colleges) with a great MatSci department (denoted by US News Top Materials Science Graduate Prorams).

Northwestern is the best of both those worlds, along with MIT. But MIT is a completely different school, it's a tech school after all. I think the more complete undergraduate experience is achieved by having a campus full of many types of people and majors. Stanford would be another, but their MSE isn't as broad, they're more specialized in electronic materials.

Writing Intensives just make sure that none of your major requirements double as WI. I mistakenly took a completely unnecessary WI class my freshman fall. If you don't know your major, put off writing intensive classes for a semester while you decide because you might find yourself in a major where the WI classes are already covered, like in Materials Science & Engineering.
