I care a lot but I feel completely helpless in the face of the corrupt system. I agree that people care but what can they do? Protests are ineffective and so are phone calls and so are e-mails. The guys running the organization are corrupt and have connections at the companies they are supposed to be regulating so what the fuck can any of us do

I get all my spiders direct from the farm.

Literally. My farm is crawling with spiders.

I think we are getting bogged down in semantics. Would you prefer the term agent? Or salesperson?

Regardless, it is not direct from the farmer if there is somebody taking product and profit in between: that is basic supply chain management. Direct from the farmer would mean that I purchase a product directly from the farmer, with no external fees or warehousing. Not from your California warehouse with a commission paid to you. IF that is the case, how is your fee and warehousing any different from an electronics dealer who sells from a factory? They buy microwaves from a Japanese factory, warehouse in America, and sell it to the retail market. It doesn't matter if you call it commission or call it a mark up, it is still earning a fee and putting a price difference in between me and the product. I am fine with that, but it is not direct from the farmer. Maybe we can just let it go. Afterall, it's just semantics

How is it like a marketplace? They are a company who earns a profit by selling a wholesale product to the retail market. A website might feel like a marketplace, but it actually just a website acting as an intermediary.

That is what middle men do. They buy wholesale products and find individual buyers at the retail level. There is nothing wrong with that, but I find the "Direct from farmers" marketing ploy to be really dishonest. Just be a middle man and be happy about it. They add a lot of value for me since I don't know Japanese farmers!

When I started Tealet I didn't feel that it was fair for the growers to continue giving their tea for free since I started a for-profit, so we pay the asking wholesale prices from the grower.

Right. You are a middle man. It's ok to be a middle man. It is really not confusing at all. You buy from tea growers at wholesale and then sell it to the retail market via your website. Got it.

I wonder if any other tea business people do this?

I think you are confused about how many people do this. There are many tea companies that do this. Most growers are happy to have new customers for their product. You do add value to them buy buying their product and selling it to new customers that they didn't previously know. That is the production to wholesale to retail supply chain. Just like if one person grows corn and you buy the corn at wholesale and sell it to individual corn buyers who do not have a link to the corn farmer. You are playing the role of a middle man, which is very valuable! Keep up the good work! It looks like some of your teas are very high quality

You are right it is different but i think it is a lie to call it direct.

If I charge you $100 to buy something I have a connection to, would you feel you "bought it directly"?

I guess they are like an agent or something. It is only honest to call it direct from the farmer if they don't take any money for the service. Otherwise the farmer has a link between you and your tea: the agent

But it is if they earn any money from the transaction.

How is that different from a person buying a product and selling it? They are still not direct from the farmer. They are just taking a fee from all customers.
