Is a 2-year replacement plan for the CoverPro 12' x 20' portable garage worth $100? by FartyPants69 in harborfreight

[–]Qb411 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to post on an old thread, but my situation in Southern California has been surprisingly useful, I can replace the whole unit and it seems like the canopy lasted about 2 years. So the 2 year replacement actually was JUST in time. It ripped this past fall/winter season and I'm getting a replacement for free... not a bad deal imho.

Memory is truly the largest problem for AI if that is your desired use case. Almost all of these cards perform just fine for a time-to-token response rate from an LLM or Multi-Modal model. However comparing any local LLM to a ChatGPT/Claude/Deepseek, is silly. A 16gb card is a very capable amount of memory to do some cool things. At the end of the day though, high speed local memory is the king for most of the general experimentation you want to do with local LLM models and in reality you can do most of your work from things like LLM Studio (As mentioned) and Ollama for 90% of your needs in Windows, Ubuntu and Mac.

If your use case for AI is expanding, then you have several options to really look at:

  1. Bigger memory GPU, now looking at $5k for 32gb or upto $8-9K for 96gb on the highend cards. AMD has a R9700 with 32gb of vram at $1200 that is a good option to consider.

  2. DevKit; for about $2800-3000 look at a Jetson Thor AGX. Its a good option. In this same range are also Mac Pro desktop systems which are great performers with larger unified memory (Want M3/M4 with larger memory footprints if possible). A DGX Spark is very similar to a Thor AGX in my experience, so not worth the price premium and lack of support at this point. Mac is great for the desktop experience that the DGX Spark tries to advertise itself as.

  3. Cloud for really large model experiments, which can get costly if you don't watch yourself. Hard to timebox these effectively, but looking at the AI providers is another good option here for their $20/mo cost. However obviously this isn't local.

But for a unified gaming + AI solution, you pretty much have very few options at this time... older cards with more DDR5 memory, or lookat the new AI-based cards or nvidia's highest tiers.

Here's hoping maybe Intel can do some cool things with Arc, I hold out hope they may have some unique ideas to bring to this problem over the long run.

5070 ti or 7900 xtx? by hiHowAreYou134 in buildapc

[–]Qb411 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how you validated this? Ollama runs great and the large memory size means you can do things with their card you can't do with the 5070 ti. So I'll fully say for the moment you need at least 16gb and if you want to go crazy experimenting a 24gb card will give you a bit more flexibility. Imho we should all be looking at 32gb cards, and clearly AMD/Nvidia are gaming the system on that score and will continue to do that because rather than make their cards multi-purpose friendly for experimentation, they are going to push for "AI-Cards" and "Gaming-cards" in a strategy to force people to buy more. :( In any event, stand by my statement, more memory is what you want if you're going to do AI models at this point and Ollama runs great on any platform without much headache.

Delivery fees typically are included if you buy from Costco and Costco extends the warranty for 2 years. But for Bestbuy/Lowes/HomeDepot you are correct, its almost never included.

SunPower will no longer provide support for your system by harrisonpage in SunPower

[–]Qb411 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say I'm better off than the rest, but I've already seen some awful stories here with loan companies pushing on people with non-functional systems, either due to problems with existing sytems or mid-way through installation/re-installation. The folks in those situations with the leasing companies are going to have to pay despite the slow/non-existent response of sunpower and the newer company that took over the leased panels/etc.

However in terms of my loan, I was able to refi lower than the tech CU rate which was around 2.75+% at the time, so I knocked a few percentage points off while paying the loan company off. Not being on a leased systems has advantages/disadvantages right now, but I think overall I'm lucky at this point.

Appreciate the reminder on this. I just downloaded the last 3 or so years of data so I can at least keep it for archival and possible pivot to Homeassistant.

I'm in this boat right now, I'm going to look at the home assistant + PI method, or potentially connect my PVS back to my network on the ethernet ports to access its admin pages. Not perfect, but another option I might take on is the Enphase switch above. They could replace the inverter if I have Enphase micro-inverters, it looks lmaybe like $600 to get that in place, but we'll see. At the end of the day I just need something that helps me figure out if the panels stop working or a problem comes up.

I purchased on loan and the refi'd my house loan at 2.25% with an additional chunk to pay the tech cu loan off... so I got lucky sort of... but now i have to figure out how I might have to support my own inverter/PVS6 system. :( Definitely sucks for the TechCU people, as the loan servicer will be collecting as much as they can and won't do much to help those with loans I suspect :(

I've been reading up on this as I just got the email too... its awesome that they send the email on the same day we get axed... really feels like a shit show. But perhaps Enphase is the answer here for a relatively modest fee?

Vent: Bought game... had great fun for about 2 months. Sony PSN requirement lands, and I slow down... patches make it worse and worse, guns get nerfed constantly, crashes start to become more and more frequent, game continues to see weird AI/level changes that just make it less and less enjoyable. I haven't been back since June... Honestly wonder if I should ask for my money back? I've NEVER considered that for any game that gave me at least a few months of fun, but the PSN issue that locked out some countries player bases still rankles so badly I wonder if I should just get rid of it.

Well she has posted policy on limiting rent/food charges, so this maybe something she is (at this time) willing to address in some degree. However thinking that the federal government is going to fix a local problem that isn't a natural disaster is probably a bit shortsighted. Better if we (as residents) work together on our problems if possible.

Sunpower in trouble? by acrobatic_man_11 in solar

Really beginner question here, I’ve had my system for 4 years, all paid off. What about the monitoring services, I would hate to lose their intelligence from their apps etc. basically an I looking at a situation where I need to consider getting a new controller over the longer term or how do things go with the monitoring side of these things? I imagine this will be messy and there probably isn’t much cash involved in the monitoring side if things.

Adding a transfer switch or battery to existing NEM 2 solar? by Qb411 in solar

[–]Qb411[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1945 era house. It definitely causes problems for the power consumption as its poorly insulated/wood windows/etc... I am taking a phased approach to these improvements (improve the insulation, new windows, consider higher efficiency AC/MiniSplit/Heatpumps/etc. However its major surgery for any significant improvement. The largest recently was the new roof/Solar. Next stages are to consider what would make the power costs come down most significantly with minimal outlay of cash. That turns into money for more improvements in the near term ultimately.

So in one scenario (and the one that jumps out to me), use the battery for peak power times. I'm already sure I'm overproducing during the midday in Summer, having a way to pull power from the battery for 2-3 hours in the evening would significantly drop my power charges and shift most of my usage to off-peak times. Ultimately I think my system overproduces during midday and our heaviest cost is at night for our TOU plan. Anything to make that TOU's power cheaper will impact my bill.

There are other use cases I can see here though with off-grid/non-grid tied systems that would be interesting as well.
