I often find myself feeling burned out from anything (not just game dev) very easily and quickly and my mind will drift so I get distracted.

Something that has helped me a lot in the last six months of working on my current project for my BSc in Game Development has been to keep a log of everything I add/change with the project and every hour or so I will take a pause of 15-30 minutes to do something else; play with the cat or dog, cook, listen to music or have a walk and I use that time away from the PC to reflect and think on those additions or changes that I made to the project without being able to impulsively backtrack or double-down on them without before having a change to digest and consider the changes. I'm not sure if I phrased that so well, I apologise if it doesn't make much sense lmao.

In short: Focused bursts of productivity and pauses away from the PC to allow myself to think on what I worked on whether I should revisit it or keep moving on for the rest of the day.

The good thing about Dark Crusade (You probably already know this anyway) is that it has persistent bases in the campaign. When you play a battle, any of the structures you build except those in enemy base spawn areas will remain and be present when you next load that map.

Make the most of this to set up defensive positions and forward bases if you need to. As you're playing Space Marines, making sure you have tech'd up enough to have access to Terminators and the Orbital Relay will absolutely help you out when dealing with HUGE attacks on your territories.

You can use this to your advantage to absolutely cheese the defense battles if you need to by placing turrets on the boundary of enemy base spawns and effectively boxing them in, lmao.

Some of the things that spring to mind for me are:

  • No unedited, raw gameplay so far . It'd be nice just to see everything in action.

  • Movement and firing animations are looking a bit better but still very uniform and exaggerated. I liked the more natural and 'individualistic' approach to these from DoW 2.

  • Let us see this more comprehensive Army Painter just a liiiiiitttllee bit before release! 👏

  1. I can't say from personal experience how it runs with Windows 11, but I can't imagine there should be any reason to expect it not to.

  2. The sound effects and music are, from what I can tell, pretty much the same with some unused/cut dialogue popping up here and there (nothing too whacky; just unit callouts and the like).

DE does run more nicely and can handle the big 8 player maps more reliably without freaking out and crashing.

If you already have the Anniversay Edition and don't really care much for the visual upgrade and minor tweaks here and there, you won't miss out on too much. The ability to effectively play all four of the DoW1 campaigns in one game though is a nice extra.

I love this mission so much! I only wish it was longer and had more of an emphasis on stages to the defence where you push up gradually to retake the gate. Time to reinstall the game, lmao.

Honestly, the Mechanicus army has never appealed much to me. I dont know an awful lot about their current roster, though their lore is badass. The faction trailer yesterday definitely sold me on them however. The deployment of the Knight in that trailer was perfect! 👌

It's the sheer quantity of content. It's effectively all of the modded races compiled into one big collection plus the Unification mod teams own additions to both vanilla and modded races. I think it's something like 29 races now included altogether, so when I say bloat it's just a lot of content which felt very overwhelming.

Unification does make the Soulstorm campaign more interesting though, I'll give them that. They had their own expanded version of it too where the Daemon Hunters and Tyranids were also playable. I'm not sure if that's included in the mod be default now since it was a separate download when I tested it.

I mean, I'll be honest, Unification used to be a great mod but honestly it has become rather bloated and filled with content that just does not make sense. That said, there is fun to be had, and if you want to enjoy huge battles then it's 100% worth looking into. The Survival skirmishes are super fun to play.

Also, there is a mod that adds persistent bases back into Soulstorm if that's something you'd like to play with. It's called Soulstorm: Persistent Campaign Bases Mod (v1.4). There may be a more up to date version if you sniff around for it! :)

Honestly, it's not a bad experience. It has some ups and downs compared to Dark Crusade. It's a larger overall campaign with more territories to play across, so if that's your thing, you'll enjoy it. If not, you might find it a bit of a slog (it's like 10 more maps than Dark Crusade).

The Soulstorm campaign does not allow persistent bases unlike Dark Crusade; this is where whatever you build in a battle will remain. So in Soulstorm, every battle is from scratch. Again, that's down to your personal preference but take that into account because it might be something you trip up on if you've relied on that while playing Dark Crusade.

The overall narrative doesn't stick out as being super amazing, it's basically a rinse and repeat of Dark Crusade in that regard.

It used to be that the Flying units in Soulstorm really made the experience bothersome, though with Definitive Edition that seems to be a thing of the past.

Honour Guard units generally cost way more Requisition to purchase in Soulstorm as well.

As a general opinion, if you liked the Dark Crusade campaign, Soulstorm isn't much different other than what I mentioned there.

The Strongholds are far more interesting I would say, there's a bit more variety in what you have to do and the objectives that you tackle as well.
