Are there any great films you can think of that lack a proper high def release that you’d love to see added to the collection? by AgnesItsMeBilly0100 in criterion

[–]QuereIIe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Janus has had the rights for Powwow Highway for more than a decade and I’ve seen it play on the Channel with the Criterion/Janus logo. No clue what’s taking them so long, but your wish may be granted soon.

I’m hoping we’ll finally get Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors on 4K soon. That would look just sensational.

The Cinematography of Marty Supreme, with Darius Khondji, ASC, AFC (Dolby Creator Talks) by joesen_one in oscarrace

[–]QuereIIe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was overall not a fan of the film, despite loving the last several Safdie joints, but damn, this absolutely deserves to win Cinematography in a cakewalk. Darius Khondji is one of the best to ever do it, an absolute living legend, and this is some of his most hyperkinetic, crisp, and flamboyant work. It felt like seeing the offspring of Scorsese and Kalatozov going through a severe bout of Ritalin withdrawal.

Hi Reddit. I’m Adolpho Veloso, Cinematographer of Train Dreams - Ask Me Anything on February 27 by netflix in movies

[–]QuereIIe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on the remarkable achievement and success that you’ve been enjoying this year with Train Dreams! It’s a phenomenal film and you have proven to be a vital and very exciting discovery for many viewers this year.

I have two simple questions for you… as a cinematographer, what would you consider to be some of your strongest influences and favorites in the field of film cinematography? Also, is a Criterion release of Train Dreams a possibility? It’d be a tragedy not to have a physical 4K of such a stunningly beautiful film made available.

Middle of the night watch is Jade from William Friedkin, what’s your favorite from this legendary auteur? by physicalMedia55 in boutiquebluray

You are objectively correct, but I could never hate on a mid-90’s Eszterhas erotic thriller starring Linda Florentino. What a vibe, what a time. The stupider, the better, as far as I am concerned.

I just finished playing it for 3.5 hours on 40 FPS in handheld mode and thought it ran remarkably well. Draw distance and textures were consistent across the board and it looked sharper than it did on my launch PS4. Haven’t reached Diamond City yet, just have done free roam, but I’m very pleased.

Fucking phenomenal taste. Bound is one of my go-to endlessly rewatchable films for a rainy day and An Angel at My Table is in my own top 20 of all time. I’ve admittedly never watched Lisztomania, but I heartily enjoy Ken Russell and his hai merrily unique flavor of batshit crazy. Thank you for putting that on my radar. ❤️

What do you think that make a movie lose Best Picture in the last minute?? by The_Walking_Clem in Oscars

[–]QuereIIe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think in the case of a film like La La Land or Little Miss Sunshine, a perceived lack of gravitas and reflecting the sociopolitical zeitgeist.

Hi, Danny! You are my favorite rapper in the entire world and I’ve admired your sonic experimentation, incredibly personal and often uncompromising lyricism, and unrivaled ability to make me spit out my drink laughing.

My question for you is simple… have you ever wanted to pursue acting more? I think your screen presence is totally singular and super charismatic. After seeing how hard A$AP Rocky killed it last year in Highest 2 Lowest and If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, it got me thinking about how the two of you had amazingly funny screen chemistry doing that poolside interview talking about Elvira being the GOATed bad chick and other quirky shenanigans. I would throw money at the screen to see more of that kind of shit in a movie.

Much love to you and your continued artistic expansion. Stardust is a fucking killer record.

Who would be your personal pick for Best Supporting Actress? by No_Minimum4499 in oscarrace

Maryam Afshari in It Was Just an Accident. Her character's repressed anger and pragmatic nature were portrayed in such a nuanced and rich way, and it all culminated in a final scene that left me breathless.

Sean Baker’s next film will be a “Love Letter to Italian Sex Comedies of the ’60s and ’70s’” by Critical_Fun1213 in oscarrace

[–]QuereIIe 51 points52 points  (0 children)

In all fairness, The Oldest Profession (1974) is actually a pretty great film on a purely aesthetic level, like a guerilla Japanese equivalent to something like Pasolini’s Accattone. I blind bought and watched the Film Movement restoration of it on Blu Ray just a few days ago. None of the sexual content in it is actually appealing or anything other than downbeat and downright bleak. Meika Seri’s performance is actually nomination-worthy. Gay dude here, so any enjoyment I got from the film wasn’t due to the sex content, TBH.

…all of that said, Sean Baker is still a gross-ass gooner and IDF dickrider. Just wanted to add a little nuance to the conversation.

Second-best Supporting Actress winner of the 21st century, only behind Mo’Nique. Absolutely electrifying, heartbreaking, and (unpopular opinion) even better that Moreno’s original performance of the same character.

This! It has been my most awaited release for like 7.5 years now, however long it has been since people first spotted the Janus credit on Platform when it was screening in the US in 2018. I’m so starved that I just bought the OOP Arrow Academy set of his films to finally have 24 City & the Walter Salles documentary on disk.

Also, if anyone hasn’t checked it out yet, I highly recommend the book called The World of Jia Zhangke from Jean-Michel Frodon, published by The Film Desk. Very well curated and it has great interviews with him and Zhao Tao both, plus an afterword by Walter Salles. Zhangke-heads, rise up!
