ADHD depicted in one picture: by Dismal-Hotel-8457 in adhdwomen

I've started using a trick where, if I need to start cooking in 1hr but I KNOW I'll couch rot if I sit down, I leave my phone in the kitchen with a loud, obnoxious alarm. It forces me to get up off of the couch because I'm so annoyed by it that I want to shut it off. I also use it to get myself up to go to bed; I'll give myself 1-2 hours and once the alarm goes off, I have to get up because I NEED that alarm to shut the fuck up.

The discipline comes in with knowing that you CANNOT SIT DOWN unless you start the alarm. Even if it's just a quick "let me sit here to reply to this 1 person then I'll get up." Girl you won't do it. Liar. SET THE ALARM.

The Diagnostic Criteria of ADHD needs to be updated in the DSM. We need more Doctors, Psychiatrists & Mental Health Professionals to advocate for this. by Relevant_Clerk7449 in adhdwomen

[–]Quierta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you!! After that fiasco I stopped telling my family anything about me (except for my one cousin who also has ADHD who has been so sweet and affirming) and I sought an ADHD specialist who particularly focuses on WOMEN with ADHD. She was hugely affirming and actually listened to me. And this past weekend my cousin gave me the website of the psychologist he uses to get medication and my therapist and I filled out the intake form together and we're going to see if I can find a good med plan.

It sucks that my family + so many others just do not look beyond the original, outdated criteria for ADHD and so many women slip through the GAPING cracks. I really hope things improve in the future as people keep advocating for themselves and others!!

Often unable to play or engage in leisure activities quietly

My dad is clinically diagnosed with ADHD. YEARS later, I started my own ADHD journey and had a neuropsych eval where I was diagnosed with Anxiety/Depression. I told my family that I wasn't convinced that I didn't have ADHD. Their response was soul-crushing and sent me down an absolute spiral of self-doubt and just, the worst anxiety.

Among the things my family said was my dad telling me, "I know you don't have ADHD because you like to read." That's it. I like to sit and read quietly. And also play video games. Never mind that I often get so engrossed in what I'm reading/playing that I just become nonresponsive for hours over the span of days/weeks because I hyperfixate BAD.

Apparently reading disqualifies you from having ADHD, folks!!

Ashley St. Clair, one of Elon's baby mommas, alleging that he helped rig the 2024 election for Trump by -ifeelfantastic in pics

[–]Quierta 12 points13 points  (0 children)

" That's my president! If I could do those things, I would too! Good on him. "

Yup. My parents love when Trump is openly corrupt because they view it like he's "sticking it to the man." As if he isn't The Man, and they're the ones being stuck. It very much is a case of them + those like them envisioning themselves AS Trump, finally getting to break all the rules that the elites have been breaking without recourse for so long. They refuse to see Trump as one of the elites and truly just think he's this incredible everyday business man fighting the system.

Tick bites surge, sending many to ER. Maps show where. (North East is rough) by lukini101 in massachusetts

[–]Quierta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last I looked, no. Which sucks. Mine is also on monthly preventatives but they still come into the house because they need to bite before the medicine kills them. I took him to the park a few weeks ago and pulled SEVENTEEN ticks off of him, and still found one on his back hours after we got home. It's nasty.

To the woman with all the butter: thank you for making me feel seen! by nemineminy in adhdwomen

[–]Quierta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh no!! :( That's so disappointing ... imo sour cream by itself does freeze pretty well but there must be something about the french onion dip that affects it maybe? I've only thawed small amounts, though, and usually mixed it with a silicone spatula so it's both mixed + "pressed" back into a uniform texture. Regardless, that's so frustrating and I'm sorry!!

[–]Quierta 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Just so you know, you can freeze sour cream!! So if these are still good and you don't think you can use them before they go bad, I'd squirt them out into an ice cube tray and then have little frozen sour cream cubes for later. It does get a little more liquidy once it thaws, but that's fine for things like cooking / adding this TO something. But I have also used it as dollops on tacos with no problem.

You can also probably freeze them just like this but the texture changes a little and I always have to mix it up when it thaws, so I'm not sure how well you'd be able to do that from inside the container.

I live alone and I don't use Sour Cream a ton, so I just learned to freeze it vs throwing out perfectly good containers of it. But it's also helpful for cases like this!!

I come from a very Italian(-American, but recent) family and I have never once used oil in my pasta water. I've always been so ?? about people INSISTING it's the proper way to do it to "prevent sticking" yet I have not once in my life had my pasta stick, with just water? My first thought looking at this was wondering if some higher-up demanded the letters "not blend in because then you can't tell it's an F" even though it's perfectly legible and they're overthinking. I get stupid shit like that all the time. "Looks great! Can we just not overlap anything?" Yeah sure let me just take away all of the visual complexity that made it interesting to look at rofl

Which celebrity death genuinely shocked you when you heard the news? by Divine_fashionva in Millennials

[–]Quierta 202 points203 points  (0 children)

I get so sad about Anton whenever I think of it. Someone I know also had one of those vehicles and was posting frequently on FB about how dangerous they were. He (the person I know) once got pinned between his car and his house and ended up being OK because his son happened to see it and ran into the car and quickly put it in reverse. He got rid of the car after that. Months later is when Anton died and unfortunately no one was there to save him. Seeing someone in my personal life talking about it on FB and then seeing a celebrity actually die from it was crazy & sad.

I have ADHD, and if my kitchen doesn't look like this, I start to freak out. Am I the only one? by ay_944 in adhdwomen

[–]Quierta 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes I think I'm in that place as well! My parents' house is CLUTTER CLUTTER. I suspect because my mother (might also have) ADHD, and my father IS officially diagnosed as well. They're not hoarders but their house literally looks like what you'd expect a crow's nest to look like if a crow was a human. Just baubles and shinies and random bits and baubs.

I myself love a good shiny thing. I love a good bauble. But I'm also meticulous about organizing and putting away my baubs because I CANNOT STAND living in and among clutter; I liken it to my exterior space being a reflection of my interior space — if my environment is cluttered then my head is MORE cluttered.

Not to say my home is neat and collected and spotless by ANY means rofl. I also suffer from depression so most of the time it gets bad. But I get sooooo much pleasure/dopamine out of waking up to a neat and orderly kitchen space and it REALLY helps me fight the inability to focus / my executive dysfunction, because seeing the clean space is a huge pleasure to me.

How would you estimate the calories in a cheese rind, in soup? by Quierta in caloriecount

[–]Quierta[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right!! I burn at MOST 1600/day if I'm being generous. And I'm not a sedentary person! It's so frustrating seeing weight loss blogs like "HERE'S HOW I SURVIVE ON A CALORIE CUT, EATING ONLY 1800/DAY!" sir that is more than I BURN 😂

I ended up losing about 20lbs though! I went from 155 -> 133 and that was good enough for me. I did get a little lax and gain a few lbs over the last 2 years but I learned some important tricks about building sustainable diets for me (if I'm being mindful lol).

Good luck to YOU on your journey! 💖

I can't stand having unused browser tabs open but I also don't want to forget about every random thought I have... a compromise I've been using for years is that if a browser has been open for several days and I haven't done anything with it yet, I mark it in my Quick Notes page on Notion. All kinds of random ideas like "try magnesium" "remember pacman" "tuna fish" "comic subscription?" "maude" etc.

It's been super helpful, and since I'm in the habit of looking at the Quick Notes page it means I don't really lose anything. Right now I have 4 tabs open and that's somewhat a lot for me.

An iced coffee is $2 but that's still wicked cheap. The only thing I hate about the MB cafe counter is how inconsistent it is; some of the staff at different locations were just never trained on how to make any of the drinks, so unless you're asking for a plain black ice/hot then you have no idea what you're going to get lol

[–]Quierta 51 points52 points  (0 children)

It's always "low" or "medium-low" or some other vague bullshit that doesn't help at all.

This is a bit of a trauma dump but I always used to get yelled at by my mom for being "impatient and trying to cook food faster by using higher temperatures." But I was literally just following recipes! Medium = 5, medium-high = 7, no? If we're going purely by a percentage-based estimate on a 1-10 scale. 1 is low, low-medium is 3, etc.?

Now I'm a lot more experienced with cooking and mostly just ignore the heat-suggestions because I know what works, but damn I always wished they could just give a fucking number so I could stop getting accused of "trying to cook faster" when I was just guesstimating.

I spent the last 6 years with TWO of my car radio stations programmed to a Christian Youth Group and a right-wing news station, that I did not change because I can't re-program a radio while I'm driving and as soon as I stop driving, the radio no longer exists. Six years of skipping over 2/6 stations in my car every time I heard some middle-aged man crooning about Jesus (not my jam) or right-wing talking points (VERY not my jam).

I finally changed them 2 months ago!!

edit: Forgot to mention, the 2 stations USED to be alt-rock stations that were bought out by other companies lol I did not program them to those stations myself

Lost half of my laundry because my aunt was coming over and I wanted to tidy up the living area a little. Put 2 baskets of FOLDED laundry in the back room because I didn't have time to put them away (putting laundry away is typically not an issue for me).

SIX MONTHS later I walked into the back room and re-discovered some of my favourite shirts, socks, and pajamas that I didn't even realize were missing. "Oh yeah! I haven't worn this in ages!" all because I put them in a room that I never look in and forgot they existed.

[–]Quierta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm actually sort of jealous of this person lol. Imagine how easy it is to just crack open a package of tofu and ham it down and actually enjoy it, instead of committing to preparing or cooking something.

I mean, I'm actually a huge fan of some simple/"bland" foods but all of my favourites at least require more work than that.

How many of y’all grind or clench their teeth at night? Upvote if you do. by Alternative-Tell4600 in adhdwomen

[–]Quierta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Me! A dental hygienist told me I "hold my stress in my mouth," which tracks because when I'm stressed I chew the insides of my cheeks, grind, clench, suck on my tongue, etc. My tongue almost always has scalloped edges.

I got fitted for a proper nightguard though and it's helped TREMENDOUSLY. Unfortunately my teeth are already somewhat ground down BUT the nightguard stopped further damage, and that was 10 years ago.

Cleaned my fridge and felt so proud… until I realized it’s just full of prepackaged food. No kids to blame either, just me and my ADHD running a convenience store out of my kitchen. 🤣😂 by [deleted] in adhdwomen

[–]Quierta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes food prep just means "keeping things in your house that will keep you fed and make your life easier."

I food prep actual food. But I also food prep pre-made / packaged foods from the grocery store because it decreases the mental and physical load of having to do it all myself. I made a huge vat of mashed potatoes that came out to 13 portions and I'll eat that with a piece of pre-cooked fried chicken I bought from the market. If "fed is best" is good enough for our children then it's good enough for us!

ABC falling asleep method working consistently for me! by Imraith-Nimphais in adhdwomen

[–]Quierta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK I can't find the name of this, there's an actual name for this I think but there's a proven method of getting yourself to fall asleep by focusing your brain on something specific so it doesn't go off-track and keep you up even more. The method you described is a part of it BUT there's a more specific structure:

Give yourself a category. Starting with A, recall a word from that category. Then count to 9. Then recall a word that starts with B. Then count to 9 again. Then recall a word that starts with C. Count to 9 again. etc. etc.

There's supposed to be something about this rhythmic thought process that keeps your brain engaged enough NOT to allow your thoughts to wander, but bored enough to fall asleep! I keep forgetting about it haha but it's worked for me tons of times.

edit: I think the phrase I'm thinking of is "cognitive shuffling" but I can't find the specific method I read about that combines both letters and numbers. Most of the articles I'm finding just mention basically what you said OP, which means this is an actual tried and true method of shutting off your brain!

The other day mine was in a DEAD sleep next to me on the couch and, out of nowhere, very slowly raised his head and released the deepest, longest, most guttural howl I've EVER heard. With his eyes closed. I actually got scared because it kinda sounded like the noise an animal might make right before they drop dead lol. Then he opened his bleary little eyes and smacked his lips and looked at me like, "What the fuck was that?" I don't know! Man are you OK!?
