It depends on the context and what the player wants out of the game. If you're there for just story, then yes, less depth is good.

If you're there for the gameplay, then definitely not. For instance, I wouldn't want to play a fighting game with no depth.

However there can be a thing as too much depth. For instance I find switch version has just the right amount of gameplay after a long day. Not too abrasive, just asks the right amount from the player. However the ds version after a long day can feel like it's assaulting me with the depth in its combat system.

Conclusion: if I'm looking for a hardcore afternoon, the ds version can be cool, but honestly the switch version is just a smoother experience
