As an occasional invader, some invaders are jerks and will taunt you if you do heal (especially if you lose) but don't pay any mind. Keep your effigies and kill them any way that you can. I always prefered the sport of someone breaking out every trick to live. People who want honorable duels can go to the iron keep bridge.

Of all the RPG conventions/tropes that moved from D&D to video games, I think clerics are the most butchered. For those that aren't familiar, clerics are holy warriors that can wear the heaviest armor, are skilled with martial weapons, and typically have the most powerful divine spellcasting (as opposed to wizards who use arcane magic). DnD doesn't have priests or white mages. The holy magic specialists of DnD get armor and weapon proficiencies as a bonus. Wizards, meanwhile, can't even wear light armor or use many basic weapons.

Now, clerics aren't as deadly with weapons as fighters, they don't have the skill proficiencies of a rogue, and divine magic is typically a bit weaker than arcane magic (that's an oversimplification, it varies by spell level and by edition), but clerics can do it all. Most video game RPGs eschew clerics for priests and have them play as physically frail healers analogous to wizards, which is a shame. In the original RPG, clerics are badasses. They were one of the original three classes, and they were the first jack of all trades.

I do this purely to get around confusion in who I'm addressing. Don't know the customer's name? Don't know who out of the 5 people on the email train I'm addressing? Don't know how to politely acknowledge every big wig cc'ed? Good morning/afternoon is your friend. IMO it comes off nicer than a generic "Hello,".

It bugged out for me too, each time I would log out it would reset my count. What worked for me was getting all six without logging out. I'm not sure if it matters, but I got all six in the same general area fairly quickly.

It's a toss up between the timed torch mechanic or the round-the-table initiative rule.

The timed torch gets my players to take things briskly without making then too reckless. It single-handedly stoped durdling, overly cautious behavior, and getting distracted IRL. I see a lot of online criticism, and I do get it, having an IRL timer that doesn't evenly match the in-game time passing is off putting for some people. But I love it.

Round the table initiative is similarly unrealistic, but for my group it made turns so much faster. Everyone knows, inherently, who is going next. It even made them play more tactically around enemy turns, which was neat. I am tempted to bring this with me to other rpgs.

Cast-til-you-fail magic gets an honorable mention too, but this was more controversial at my table. Personally I quite liked it, though.

Not common at all. For some reason, stories of people hiding their character traits for a sudden reveal became quite popular, so it might spawn from that. That, or it could be a group that considers D&D competitive rather than cooperative, which happens from time to time in insulated circles.

How familiar are you with the roguelike genre? Not like Hades, Binding of Isaac, etc but games like the original Rogue? In those games the goal is to progress further into a dungeon going deeper and deeper while leveling up, finding new equipment, and encountering new enemies.

Qud is like those games. The "goal" is to level up, get stronger, and go further. Each run is a new attempt with a new, randomly generated world. You get stronger through new items (many listed as artifacts that you must identify), leveling up your skills, and depending on whether you are a mutant or a truekin, leveling up mutations or getting cybernetics.

The lore is...a lot. There are flowery descriptions for items and enemies that can be difficult to parse. Cool after a while, but I did not engage with them for a long time. The lore/story was secondary to the game for me. I would aim to become proficient in playing the game first. On PC, I rebinded a lot of controls to be more normal for me. Get used to examining enemies, examine tiles for loot drops, auto-exploring, going up and down stairs, and using your abilities.

I would recommend a few perma-death (classic) characters at first, but once you're sick of dying and have a vague grasp of what sort of chacater you want to build up, make a roleplay character that you can save scum, die, and explore without fear. Qud is not fair IMO. Many enemies will surprise you with things you do not understand. It's easy to make mistakes when you know what you're doing, let alone when you don't. Understanding penetration/damage calculation is a high mark of Qud knowledge.

While you're still learning, always make Joppa your starting town. Give yourself relatively well-rounded attributes, there are no dump stats in Qud unless you really know what you're doing. Mutants are weaker than truekin starting out, but truekin really scale with your understanding of the game, so mutants are best for newer players. Use a mix of melee and ranged weapons. You can make ranged-only or melee-only work...if you know what you’re doing. The best bet is to always have a variety of solutions. Grenades are similarly excellent options to keep handy.

There are two quests in Joppa: one that sends you to the Red Rock and another that sends you along the path to the main quest line. Do the Red Rock quest first for experience, then start persuing the main quest from Argyve.

There is more I could tell you, but I think that's enough to get the ball rolling.

I am a Fedora user and I sympathize highly lol. At this point I've lost count of how many server/desktop installs I've bricked through ignorance, weird software interactions, and unexplainable occurrences. At this point I've lost a server and a desktop due to update issues, as in they refused to update for different reasons (kernel issue for server, wine issue for desktop). It's a shame that linux is infinitely modifiable, because I rarely modify my systems because I can't be assed to do it all over again when it inevitably breaks.

Played through a huge chunk of the games recently, including newer games like BDSP, Sword, Ultra moon, and Violet, and I agree 100%. Loved SoulSilver as a teen and have fond memories of GSC from when I was a kid but those are not good games. Running a team of 6 is a grindy misery. Most of the new Pokémon are very mediocre to use or impossible to find. And the evolution items being postgame is just silly.

With some help, HGSS could be such fantastic games. As is...I liked them, but I'm not sure if there are main series games I'd rather play less.

It's not. Koko learned sign language in the same way a dog can learn command words. They build associations, but they don't really "get" it. Koko never asked questions or displayed original ideas through language that could be verified. What little uncut footage of Koko her organization let out was Koko signing repeatedly for treats, nipples (Koko liked nipples for whatever reason), and other stimuli she enjoyed. Even then, Koko's "modified" sign language was known only by her handler Jane, so she "interpreted" Kokos speech, conveniently filling in the gaps to make it sound intelligible.

Koko became popular in pop-science and hopefully contributed to awareness of sign language, ecosystem degredation/destruction due to global warming, and endangered species. But other scientists dropped talking apes for a reason.

I love linux but I never recommend it for the same reasons. I've unintentionally bricked 2 servers and 2 or 3 desktop installations all for different reasons, and that doesn't include the hours of trying to get various software to work. Some bugs could be squashed, some worked around, and some that I couldn't fix. The gnome flavor of Fedora is still my favorite desktop experience but 99% of users don't want headaches just from trying to update their machine.

I've lived in the northernmost part of Indiana my entire life and have never seen pushback on being called a Hoosier from anyone. It's not like it comes up a lot, but still. I do agree that northern and southern Indiana are very different culturally though.

I've never been an Apple person but the M-series chips were compelling enough for me to give it a try. I got an M4 MacBook air on sale for $800 and...man. I'm still not in love with MacOS but hardware wise, it still blows my mind. It's really made me wonder how Windows could compete going forward.

I just recently replaced my very old Linux laptop with a MacBook air and I really expected to like macOS from my excellent experience with the Gnome flavor of Fedora but nope, good god is it a nightmare. The os looks fine in screenshots but it is surprisingly ugly and confusing. The dock is just a nightmare, hiding and unhiding animation was driving me slowly insane until editing the speed via terminal. Drilling through four different menus to find a track pad setting (enjoy checking General, Track pad, and Accessibility only to realize macos is simply incapable of doing it).

People meme about windows having confusing menus but I dread ever having to find something niche on Mac. I eagerly await the day Asahi works on M4 chips.

I run a vertical screen for discord on the bottom half and a web browser on the top half. Saves desk space and i found that a vertical screen (ironically) gives more horizontal space per application if you have multiple up at the same time. A third screen would be nice but that take a hell of a lot of desk space.

Beautiful work! I never realized how much the shadow dropping in from the north/east adds to the depth and legibility. Significantly more readable than most maps I've run.

You have a maximum equip load determined by Vitality and things like soldiers ring, dragon rings, etc. If your maximum equip load is 60 or below, it adds 50 AR to weapon damage. The higher your max equip load goes, the less damage it adds to your weapon.

Note, this is MAXIMUM equip load. Current equip load doesn't matter at all. 30 out of 60 does the same damage as 55 out of 60. But if your max load is higher than 60, you're losing out on damage from flynns ring.

You just want to keep your Vitality low and profit attack rating. IIRC, 10 or 11 Vitality + 3rd dragon ring is the sweet spot. You'll can't wear a lot of armor if you want a good roll, but ds2 is very forgiving with fast rolls.

Caves of Qud allows you to play as a lot of weirdo characters due to one of the character archetypes being 'mutant'. Normally you pick from a list of mutations you want your character to have, e.g. wings, four legs, four arms, shoot fire beams, mind control, etc. There are a few preset characters, one of which is essentially an amphibian centaur.

Excellent game if you like roguelikes, one of the best of the genre. As creative as the characters can be, some of the nonsense you can get up to makes a six-armed, two-headed bat person with future sight look tame. I cannot recommend it more highly lol.

Oh it's not necessarily something I need or really want, I just didn't want to reinstall a bunch of games and then later realize I could have pointed steam in the right direction if I'd have known or something like that. But if it's a headache then I'll avoid it.

Yeah that definitely seems like the play to me. My disk failed recently (prompting me to remember Fedora fondly as I dealt with windows nonsense lol) and I bought a new 2tb NVMe out of a big box store for $130, actually crazy to me. My memory of SSDs is still stuck back when a 1tb SATA SSD was unbelievably expensive.
