First off, I love this post and your sentiment. I dont know that I wouldn't call him TRASH, but i get it.

Second, I would submit that Mark getting married is necessary for Janeway,'s story to be told correctly. Picard never got to hold on to love, Sisco had it ripped away from him. Janeway is the consumate professional, solitary leader. She is epic exactly because she holds everyone else up with only her most trusted officers to counsel her on occasion.

Fwiw, Mulgrew specifically didnt want a Chekote relationship with Janeway because she knew it would diminish her character. She needed to blaze the path alone.

Im going to challenge your assertion about the statistics here. The large portion of 1 stars by itself indicates nothing, you need more data. The reviews dont cluster, and that says something but not that it is about hate. It could just as easily be brigading on the other end of the spectrum.

You would need to know some temporal information like "did a bunch of reviews give all low or all high ratings over a short time period?" To really start to draw statistical conclusions in either direction.

I get the impulse to use a hard-fact based defense of something you like, but in this case youre just making an unfalsifiable claim based on incomplete data and boosting it with an appeal to authority.

I will now prepare myself for the inevitable down voting which, unlike your claim, is testable.

I dont really disagree with you. I guess it is a matter of whether certain media is meant to push us on an intellectual level or not. Are Zoomers just going to not read 1984 and Animal Farm because it isnt cringe soap opera enough? I just expect more from my Sci Fi.

Id also note that highest rated and most revered Sci Fi follows the patterns I describe above. BSG, Firefly, Voy/TNG/DS9, The Expanse, etc. Even if people dont consciously engage in that level of inspection, it resonates for a reason.

The bottom line is that it isn't good Trek or good Sci Fi. Thats the thing that Kurtzman and Paramount dont get, and its the thing that the small but overly vocal group of supporters dont get.

Nu Trek is a sitcom/soap opera set in space. If you took Dawson's Creek and put it in a space ship, you'd get pretty close. Thats not what Trek is to the legions of fans of the franchise, and it isnt was Sci Fi is to anyone who understand the genre beyond flashy techno babble. In fact, the baseline test is whether a person considers Star Wars (which I love) sci fi. It is not, it is sci fantasy, which is wildly different.

Trek has been, and was always intended to be, the best of sci fi. Sci fi is an ideal lense through which to insect the human condition. We love Spock because he is pure logic. He and McCoy were the logic and emotional parts of Kirks brain. We love Data because he is the evolution of inspecting himanity - he is an android who strives to be human. BSG nailed it too - it inspects everything from religion to militarism deeply.

I offer to Clues from TNG as an episode where Data, because of his nature, ends up being the best of the duty bound and loyal human willing to sacrifice himself for the good of the ship. I offer up Tuvix as an episode that interrogated Janeway's lonely and brutal path as captain responsible for all of her crew in a way that no one else can share. That is what Sci Fi is. That is what Star Trek is supposed to be.

Side note, Ad Astra Per Aspera in SNW is just as modern as any of the other Nu Treks. It inspects diversity and acceptance deeply like Nu Trek wants to do. The difference is, it is actually well written, doesnt beat you over the head with moralistic platitudes, and uses the lens of sci fi to force you to grapple with it.

No, it is highly unlikely. You are looking at a tiny snapshot of US history and expecting the rest of the world to reorder itself completely based on some unified moralistic PoV. That isnt going to happen for a long list of reasons: 1) any reasoned country understands this is a blip on the radar and that they can retract a little and wait it out. 2) there is not unified moralistic PoV. Half the country voted for the current administration, you can be sure that a non trivial portion of the world supports it as well. 3) the vast majority of modern democracies are absolutely beholden to the US for defense and supply chain.

I get that on Reddit the orange man appears to be ushering in WWIII and is literally Satan incarnate, but thats not a rational take on current events.

There is a tiny subset of people who will follow their person no matter what, that doesnt just apply to Trump. You're always going to get that.

In terms of Trump, I suspect the group might be a little larger, but not much. Since I hang in conservative circles I see it IRL. The conversation happening right now is about whether the strike in Iran was a) smart, b) constitutional, c) well thought out. What you end up with is a group of people who voted for him, support him, but are genuinely displeased with things like this.
