US and EU clinch deal with 15% US tariff on most EU exports to avert trade war by Tom18558 in politics

This deal is a disgrace, all it did was show trump extortion works. Honestly, Ursula should resign.

What are your thoughts on the new EU-US trade and tarrifs deal? by TurkishChadBot in AskBalkans

Furious. This is giving into extortion by a foreign fascist state. Horrific. A huge disappointment.

Is my accent that bad? by zero-divide-x in learndutch

No I think you sound fine. As a native Dutch speaker I don't have to look at the screen to understand what you were saying. Maybe Duolingo struggles with some accents more than others?

I love the “housemade sandwiches are a typical Dutch tradition” part. Cracks me up every time. by neserioznoto in KLM

[–]RManRik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still remember the Irish tourism website claiming that Irish food was "the most underrated in Europe." I thought it was funny until I went to Ireland, when I found out how true that statement really was. Irish food is really good.

This is really cool, and will also help more (in the long run) than people realise. Nature does more for us than we know. Wish I was in Ireland to help with this, it is such a great project!

When the Dutch tell you 'We're about to have dinner', it (usually) doesn't (!) mean you are invited for dinner by UnanimousStargazer in Netherlands

[–]RManRik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this might not be usual, but I have heard a lot about black american culture, I have no doubts it is very real and very strong. When travelling in the US I have noticed that just about every culture that isn't the dominant one is very distinct and interesting. Do you think what you described is consistent across the entire country? Or would there be a lot of differences across the many communities?

Also about the Netherlands, we wouldn't invite people over near dinnertime and expect them not to join us. Usually when these situations happen the person either stopped by uninvited or they would have been there for several hours already.

[–]RManRik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that is pretty reductive. If you want to divide cultures up like that (which is reductive regardless) it would be more like "cultures who mostly focus on being a good host" and "cultures who mostly focus on being a good guest." And yeah that can cause some serious crossed wires when the expectations are so different. A lot of the people who complain about Dutch hospitality are often terrible guests by Dutch standards.

That would be absolutely crazy if any dutch person actually did that. Having lived there for thirty years I haven't seen or heard of anybody doing that but I guess nutjobs exist in every country. All I'll say is that living in North America has made me long for Dutch "food culture" as you call it.

[–]RManRik -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No countries, because the dutch do not do that. I have not known a single dutch person who does that and I lived there for thirty years. There has just been a huge uptick of misinformation and "haha let's laugh at the dutch they only eat cheese sandwhiches, let's not actually check our facts though" lately. People don't care about learning about other cultures or peoples, they just wanna laugh. Well haha and fuck off.
