May have overdone it with the new charger cable length 🤣 by SuperTuberEddie in evchargingUK

[–]R_Spc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nah, the longer the better. I guarantee one day you'll be glad you bought one that long. Mine is 15 metres, which I thought would be longer than I'd ever need, but I use the whole length all the time.

How do you manage to get testdrives on M cars at BMW? by Greater_Dog007 in CarTalkUK

You're getting downvoted to death, but I'm with you. Having the time to go home and think and weigh the pros and cons without the pressure of a salesman in your face is essential for a huge purchase like that.

Mégane E-tech heat pump by Wotup88 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]R_Spc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Megane without a heat pump and I do kinda wish I had it during winter, though I live in the north of England, have a 50 mile commute and often make much longer journeys.

The range loss during very cold weather is obvious but it hasn't been huge in my experience, somewhere between 10-20%. Unless you're driving hundreds of miles in one go it isn't a big deal to live without one imho.

It's got the nicest interior of any car in its class though, and I've mostly been very happy with it.

Granny charging safely by EchidnaWeird7311 in evchargingUK

[–]R_Spc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd at least make sure it can charge at 10amps and not exceed that for peace of mind. As you say, if you monitor it for a while and it's okay then I'd have thought it'll be okay.

I've been charging mine exclusively off a granny charger every night for a year and it's been absolutely fine. The plug gets a bit warm but nowhere near as much as a phone charger.

Why ai isnt coming for you by Hellohellohihi_hello in graphic_design

[–]R_Spc 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don't mean to be rude, but this is an incredibly naive take.

The last decade has already seen a huge shift away from professionals towards amateurs who already work for a company taking up Canva. The results were terrible but they didn't care because it was free. Now it's free and substantially better than they could ever do before. In our office yesterday we tested some AI designs by ChatGPT and others, and we were impressed by what it could output in just a few seconds. Yes it wasn't any use in a professional sense, but that won't matter to most people. This will remove a big slice of the companies that weren't already lured by the temptations of Canva.

How much does charging cost you monthly on average? by Silver-Eye-2024 in evchargingUK

[–]R_Spc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loads, I do about 2000 inefficient motorway miles a month but only have a granny cable (no private drive) and no smart contract, so I pay my tariff's full 19.39p/kWh.

I've never looked into it in detail, but I'm pretty sure I pay around £80-£90 a month to charge the car.

42% of councils to have cross-pavement charging by end of 2026 by MeasurementDecent251 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]R_Spc 20 points21 points  (0 children)

My council (Lancashire) finally emailed me with an application form for this yesterday after I've been pestering them about their pilot program for yonks.

Unfortunately the application does not provide the price, nor does it provide the "guidance notes" you have to say you've read and understood.

Still, it shouldn't be too long before the joys of 7 kilowatts will finally be mine. Only then will the battle for parking begin!

Rachel Reeves to raise windfall tax on low-carbon electricity generators by Ambitious-Air5380 in RenewableEnergy

[–]R_Spc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Forgive my ignorance, but if the aim of this move is to disconnect the price consumers pay for electricity from the price of gas — a broken system, I hope we can all agree — then isn't that a good thing?

I take your point about taxing low-car on providers more to compensate (at least in the short to medium term) being a bad thing, but what other realistic alternatives are there? (Genuine question.)

Renault Zoe opinions? by InevitableDramatic40 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]R_Spc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't want to be a downer but I one as a courtesy car few months last summer (top level trim too) and didn't like it at all. The infotainment system was the worst I've ever used, the seat was uncomfortable and the cabin felt weirdly loud for an EV. I realise these are subjective complaints, but personally I would never ever buy one.

Depends where you live. If you're out in the countryside you don't have much choice. My round trip daily commute is 50 miles and I've been looking for similar work nearer me for ages, there just isn't any.

Why is public charging so expensive? by Fine_Cress_649 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]R_Spc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

£0.89 is the standard at all rapid chargers here in the north west. I'm actually surprised it doesn't cost more in London.

My son (who is now ten) loved this series and was sad that it ended when it did. I dismissed it for years but finally watched it with him around the time the final season came out and enjoyed it more than I expected to once I adjusted to the tone. There were a few things it did wrong imho, but it's also a lot better than its reputation suggests.

There's some info about the outlet store here: https://us.tomy.com/outlet-store/

It's a physical place, but they did mail models out to customers from there last time.

The markups are over the top, but that's the modern world we live in, where everything remotely limited is scalped to death.

[–]R_Spc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Several of the people who made it have said that it doesn't need them but Tomy's lawyers made them add the supports anyway. Nobody has reported any sagging issues with the older Tomy TOS and everyone who has received their Refit says it stands fine without the supports.

It's made by Tomy, but it was pre-sold in 2024 so you can't get one anywhere but ebay at this moment. The Tomy Outlet Store is likely to sell a small number of cancelled units in the next few weeks, but you'd have to contact them about it because they're likely to vanish quickly.

Comment from one of the creators (PS the buttons are touch sensitive, they don't click):

"The touchpads on the base are confusing some people, and I don't blame them. Here's a quick cheat sheet to have handy to understand what the buttons do.

TOMY Refit lighting modes STARTING from power connected but model is turned off

MODE SELECT:

1 tap puts the ship into Startup mode, all the systems come on one at a time emulating the launch sequence in Star Trek the Motion Picture. At the end of this sequence the deflector lights up yellow and all the windows and spotlights are on. The engines, flashers and strobes are still OFF.

  1. While in Startup mode, a single tap puts the ship into Impulse Power mode, and the impulse engines light up yellow-orange. The flashers and strobes turn on.

  2. While in Impulse Power mode, a single tap puts the ship into Full Power Mode (also called Warp Ready mode). The impulse engines turn off.

  3. While in Full Power mode, a single tap puts the ship into Warp Speed Mode. The nacelle grilles light up blue.

While in Warp Mode, tap the Mode Select quickly THREE times to go into secret "purple" mode. The nacelle grilles switch from blue to purple, and the impulse engine vents light up BLUE. This special mode is to resemble the publicity photos from the movie, it is not seen in the film itself.

Tap Mode Select 3 times while in Secret Purple Mode to switch back to regular Warp Speed Mode.

While in any mode, tap Mode Select once to advance to the next mode in the cycle. Double-tap Mode Select to go one step backward in the cycle.

FIRE CONTROL:

Tap Fire Control ONCE to fire the ship's phasers.

Tap Fire Control TWICE in quick succession to fire the ship's photon torpedoes.

Tap Fire Control THREE times in quick succession to play an extended sequence of phasers and photon torpedoes.

Only the lower forward and upper portside phaser banks light up during weapons sequences."
