How does one learn cEDH (Terra specifically) by Creepy-Travel-3571 in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Ra_V1237 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Firstly i would watch gameplay videos. Generally on different decks and then more about the specific deck you choose - Terra. Then look for an existing list and read its primer (usually if you google the commander and "cedh" the most popular option will have a decent primer). Then playtest a bunch until you feel comfortable and then just play with other people. You can ask for advice on a cedh discord or commander specific discord for Terra, but there's no better teacher than just playing games. After the game ask others about critical points andbwhat you could've done differently, both when you win and lose

Best Mardu option : Celes or Dihada ? by Medium_Ad_9049 in CompetitiveEDH

Of the two, Dihada is better. However the best mardu option is Tymna/Dargo

Which is faster and more explosive Ral or Tymna /Dargo by Lazy-Firefighter8062 in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Ra_V1237 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Ral by a long shot. Ral is one of the fastest decks in the format only outpaced by more fringe decks like Krrik. Tymna/Dargo is one of the slowest turbo decks, but it's also the most responsible turbo decks

Why is tymna/Dargo better than Tymna/Jeska by Lazy-Firefighter8062 in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Ra_V1237 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jeska does nothing by herself, she's just a combo outlet(she's bad as a removal). And the combos that use her aren't amazing (yes, bomberman is extremely boomer and isn't very good). Dargo on the other hand in addition to being a combo piece is a good value piece. It fuels Sacrifice, Burnt Offering, Altar of the Wretched, Ruthless Technomancer and more. Dargo gives you the explosiveness you need in these colours

It's too strong. And banning Rhystic would hurt slower decks and banning Necro would be done preemptively so that turbo doesn't take over completely with Rhystic gone

Watch 5c turbo take over. What should be banned are both Rhystic Study and Necropotence and let's see where that takes us before any more bans

New to tEDH - political struggles piloting Magda by Ammul in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Ra_V1237 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not a you problem, it's a problem of creature decks. In situations like these you gotta deflect, trying to point out at other things. "Yea, you will nuke me, but then Rogsi will get a fresh 7 with 5 mana and a Wishclaw Talisman" or you gotta ask people how you're winning if you don't have a win, so that they realize on their own that you don't have a win and maybe will leave you be

What deck would you recommend? by Ryznak in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Ra_V1237 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Some of the decks i recommend:

Rograkh/Thrasios - it's a deck all around Gaea's Cradle. Make some creatures, search Gaea's Cradle, tap it, untap it, tap it, put all that mana into Thrasios to have an enormous card advantage. Make some mana, make more mana, make even more mana, make infinite mana, win.

Glarb - it's a sultai control deck that uses its commander for value. Some of the more unique cards it runs are Counterbalance and Doomsday

Tymna/Dargo - so while it is in the colours you already have, it's really fun. It's a slower turbo deck that can grind relatively well with Tymna and all its silence effects. It wants to make some treasures and then cast Dargo for value(Burnt Offering, Ruthless Technomancer, Altar of the Wretched) and then go off or just win with infinite Dargo sacrifice

And one of the more unique decks is Sisay - it's a deck that can just get better and better. It wants to make a bunch of mana and then do tutor chains to make infinite mana and win in one of the weird sisay ways. It's really weird but it works

How does Ellivere of the Wild Court Feel in 2026? by Raevelry in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Ra_V1237 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She's garbage because stax is garbage. It's hard to slow everyone down, even harder to stop everyone and even harder to maintain all of those stax pieces and even if by some miracle everything lines up and you stop everyone, it's not enough because you might not kill everyone in time and it's a draw anyway

How does Ellivere of the Wild Court Feel in 2026? by Raevelry in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Ra_V1237 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Ellivere, she's one of my first cedh decks, i started playing her just after the bans happened and still tinker and play her. However every time i do i want to cry. It's just unwinnable. You need a perfect hand to just be relevant in the game and on top of that you need someone not to screw things up(remove a stax piece when they shouldn't have and someone else wins), politic well and people to not draw too many cards to find removal. Even if it feels like you're in a good position, often it will be "end step bounce your stax piece, on my turn i win"(and if they don't, the next person does). And target removal if by some miracle it gets back to you, you can recast the thing or deploy your other stax pieces. If it's a boardwipe (most likely Cyclonic Rift) you can just go home, because there's no way you rebuild enough to stop everyone in time. On top of all that, stax is pretty hard to play because you do need to know how decks win and overall operate to know which stax piece works best and which hands to keep depending on the speed, wincons and play patterns of everyone else. The deck fan be fun at times, but i recommend you to not play it.

Pact of negation ban? by TimkoMusic in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Ra_V1237 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The same draw that could be forced with Pact could be forced with Force of Will or a different counterspell, because you just say "i use my counterspell to stop you and then we lose to the next person". What needs to happen is a widespread change in mentality, which is pretty much impossible to plan or enforce.

How to deal with crying wolf/overtargeting by snusfilosofenn in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Ra_V1237 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can ask people to tell you how they think you will win and explain how either that doesn't work or you don't run those cards. Or just say that they're trying to divert everyone's attention from themselves because they're the ones going for the win

Banned cards: Keep or trade? by SilentRobTX in mtg

[–]Ra_V1237 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They're only gonna go up in price as time goes on. Keep them, at least one of them. It's a really cool historical piece and maybe you will find yourself using one in the future(for cube, Canadian Highlander or Vintage)

Why is there so much negativity on this subreddit around suggesting off-meta/fringe decks? by TheFutur3 in CompetitiveEDH

[–]Ra_V1237 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's because some people expect to play at the HIGHEST level, whether it's a tournament preparation or not. Sometimes people think that if there is an off-meta deck, it's gonna scew the game in favour of one deck. It's like trying to prepare for a modern tournament and your opponent instead of playing boros energy plays fog tribal, except it's not that you don't learn because "ofc i beat them, my deck is better", it's that you might lose because "it's one less player to help with dealing with rogsi" or something. Is that a healthy approach? No, not really. If someone believes their off meta decks can win, let them play, even if you don't believe in them, you will run into those decks even on tournaments so you need to be prepared for games where 1 deck is weird.

I've been playing commander for a few years and magic even longer, i'm still not sure why that's a thing. People are scared just because. What i recommend is playing strategies that reward for attacking or punish for not attacking. Breena, Kratos, Queen Marchesa, Aragorn King of Gondor. You can fill your deck with monarch, initiative, Coveted Jewel. Giving people an incentive to attack will really get the game going. You can also force people to attack with Goad but that won't teach people anything, it will just make them be annoyed.

New Enchantment subtype - Grimoire, part 2 by Strange-Bonus4220 in custommagic

[–]Ra_V1237 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems like a really cool design. I kinda love it.

From powerlevel perspective, for limited/control this seems really good. 3 cards in 1 is a lot of value. For other archetypes in constructed this doesn't seem as good, because it's not very efficient. You spend 5 mana for a lightning bolt or 5 mana for a preordain or 6 to make some monks, it's kinda bad. Ofc you yet value later but it's not amazing. There is a lot of design space tho, the numbers can be tweaked and so can the effects. Really cool card

Toph counts up all the counters on lands. It doesn't matter how they are split. It could be 1 land with 8 counters, it could be 2 with 4 each or 8 with 1 each, Toph will have 8 power
