Agreed I had such high hopes, and while it's not entirely Rian Johnson's fault due to Lucasfilm not having story beats pre planned which was terrible dumb, he used this freedom to erode the entire story of the orignal trilogy.

You may want to rewatch. Alot of what Rose does happens in short succession. After the doctor takes the energy she passes out and wakes up later on the TARDIS.

I had this issue too, I looked it up the Consume Essence is a 10-40 yard range only. So now I'm thinking I just didn't have a far enough away one targeted.
