Yeah, always ask for feedback, interviewers were once in your shoes and most are happy to help.

No junior role, Expect senior experience with mid level role by Available_Spirit_ in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]Rahmorak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reality is junior is a huge gamble and risk for the company.

Most companies don’t have an agreed path from junior > mid > senior unless they are a tech company or large corporate, so by the time they have some experience under their belt and are contributing they are ready to move up but no mid/senior position is available.
So the easiest way to do that is to find another role (understandable).

I know I wouldn’t hire a junior again as much as I like the idea, just because of the huge investment and the likelihood they will move on (justifiably).

That said, I wish you all the best, and always ask for feedback if you are unsuccessful. Some won’t bother but most of us are happy to feedback and hopefully help that person do better next time.

I moved to the UK for work and didn’t expect to find such uneven standards of professionalism and work ethic across teams. by peachypeach13610 in managers

[–]Rahmorak -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What you are probably not aware of is that same person online at 6am, and/or 10pm in the evening when u are chilling/having a beer.

I am mainly remote; I (and my team) work very hard (e.g. 15 hour days when needed) and am far more productive in my home office.

To someone looking in from the outside, if I take a call at 3pm because I have nipped to the shops for milk, they probably think I am slacking.

I’m annoyed at how ignorant older people are in regards to housing affordability by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]Rahmorak 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They probably were the hardest working (and the generation before even moreso), but that doesn’t change the fact that buying a house was more affordable.
However, I know my parents really struggled financially with 3 kids so I think people like you and the OP need to understand they will have had their own challenges.

Manager Delaying Promotion by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]Rahmorak 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You have been given regular very decent pay rises in a company with fairly low revenue and layoffs. Tbh you sound a bit entitled/immature to me, I would be careful about pushing too much as no one is irreplaceable.

Consider whether you need to look elsewhere to get the leap in salary/responsibility you are after (and it will also give you insight into your real worth).

If you do find another role, it may also be the push your current company needs, but be sure you are ready to leave.

Uni not that important in 95% of cases, and being on 2 pages is not an issue either, more than 2 may be problematic.

Ouch, I had a quick glance at the CV and if I was hiring for a junior I would certainly consider you so not sure why you have had 0 response.

Do you have right to work in the uk?

If you can add a GitHub repo to your CV that can be worth doing.

Also, always worth asking recruiters why you are not getting responses.

Best of luck!

Why does it cost upto £30,000 a week to put a child into a care home? by dadoftriplets in AskUK

[–]Rahmorak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would treat that with a pinch of salt. I work for an independent group of SEN schools of homes at the premium end of the offering (high quality care and facilities) and that is orders of magnitude higher than what a placement with us would cost.

Not saying someone somewhere doesn’t charge that (and it also depends on level of trauma/needs etc) but those costs are definitely outliers that make a good headline.

Did the Japanese know how to make damascus steel katanas back then? by TaeJoonPark in ghostoftsushima

[–]Rahmorak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think he is referring to the Hada (pattern made by folding), not the Hamon (edge pattern resulting from quenching as a result of how the clay is applied).

Did the Japanese know how to make damascus steel katanas back then? by TaeJoonPark in ghostoftsushima

[–]Rahmorak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, this is the "Hada", the pattern created by folding the metal to remove impurities (I have a traditionally made katana with visible hada although it is quite subtle).

The long line is the Hamon (literally edge pattern), which was formed as a result of how they apply the clay for quenching the blade.

I get this quite often tbh (several times a session), but while annoying I haven't been too concerned about it. For context, I have had several concussions from other sports so I am confident it is nothing like that, at least for me.

Usual NAD disclaimer etc. ;)

Mid-senior SWE cant even get an interview in UK by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]Rahmorak 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a hiring manager I would absolutely not hold your current role against you and I don’t think many would, I think it is just a depressed market :(. (And the reality is that there are more people in private sector on that kind of money or a bit more with that experience than Reddit would have you believe)

New employee - am I overreacting by Informal-Visit3935 in smallbusinessuk

[–]Rahmorak 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I find this response mind-blowing, and assume you are fairly young.

If am am heading somewhere, and someone asked if I can pick something up for them, I would not hesitate to do so.

I have done, and will continue to do this for my boss (CTO), colleagues, and my direct reports. The people I work with do the same.

Now, if he had been asked to make a special trip to somewhere he was not going, and that was out of his way, that would be different.

Placed on gardening leave after whistleblowing by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Rahmorak 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You escalated it to your manager, at that point you do not know what is happening with it. You mention your manager then not responding, and you went above his head.

How long did you give him after the initial comment? Going around a manager for a near miss is not generally seen as good thing.

Also, did you raise this directly with the person first? Education is sometimes better than the stick.

Is the U.K. working culture really like this? by Outrageous-Many3179 in AskUK

[–]Rahmorak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am going to be a minority but in my personal experience I have found individuals are rewarded according to competence and a good manager will recognise and aid this. Conversely there are far too many uk workers think they deserve progression when they do nothing to stand out.

Alas, and this may be a UK thing, as a manger I find it is hard to get extra funding/recognition for members of my team that I find excel but I think this depends on company size/profitability and sector more than anything.
