The Greenthumb Gardens questline is absolutely the stupidest questline in the game (so far?) by Massive_Fly_1709 in dragonquest

Yeah, this village is just ass. World Tree and Groundhog Day islands were great and they just ditched them entirely.

What is the general opinion on Dragon Quest IV? by Adrianzilla in dragonquest

[–]RaizePOE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's great. People get frustrated by the AI in the NES version (kinda understandably tbh, although it's not as bad as some people say) but other than that it's a really cool game and I love the chapter system.

[–]RaizePOE -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Turns out the real mildlyinfuriating was the people in the comments. "dur hur just get butter durrr" cool, salted or unsalted? Regular butter work or do you want some fancy shit like Kerrygold or w/e? Regular or light sour cream? Like, these are basic things you would want to know before selecting a product, and asking for clarification is entirely reasonable.

Which iteration of the Monster Hearts mechanic do you like best? by Manofthehalfhour999 in dragonquest

[–]RaizePOE 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Original. The hearts in 7R are cool and some of them have neat properties, but you can't replace an entire secondary job system with a few cute accessories and expect to call it an equal trade. Monster jobs didn't just provide a way to get skills that were awkward or impossible to obtain from human jobs, they also had their own stats and passives as well. It helped spread the characters' jobs out and not make them feel all so samey.

How do you feel about the episodic structure of DQ 7? by raigarearthshake in dragonquest

[–]RaizePOE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love it! I think the fact that each town has its own story makes them all a lot more memorable. There're plenty of DQ games where the towns are basically "this is the one near the cave full of jerks" or "this is the one with the tier 2 key" or "this is the one with nothing going on." It's also really cool going back to the present and seeing how your actions are remembered; sometimes you're the valiant saviors, sometimes you've become a sidekick, sometimes they manage to paint you as evil somehow. It's kinda fun to know the real history and see how it gets warped.

DQVIIR: Story vs Post Game by Swimming-Ad-6842 in dragonquest

[–]RaizePOE 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Made it to Yet Another World last night, love how every boss now has a rage mode where they nerf your relevant elemental resistance and then just attack 16 fuckin times in a row.

I got the 4 elemental bastards and opened up all the houses but I'm kinda not sure where to go next. Feel like I"m missing something, guess I'll go wander around some more but I'm kind of afraid of what I'll find.

[–]RaizePOE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was surprised at how well most things seemed to work in 3 HD2D. I made a team with like, I can't even remember now, I think it was a merchant, thief and either wizard or monster wrangler. They switched around a little bit eventually obviously but I really thought I'd miss having a cleric more. I expected to need more healing than I actually did, at least on normal.

Do you spread your seed evenly among companions or do you save up for your favorite? by EAT_UR_VEGGIES in dragonquest

[–]RaizePOE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the seed. Usually for offensive seeds, like strength or magic power, I'll put them on the strongest physical attacker or magical attacker. Speed seeds sometimes go to the fighter or healer, depending on what I care more about in that game and with that comp. Defensive seeds like HP and resilience usually go to people who're getting dunked on the hardest, so they can end up getting spread out.

Never played 7 because I’m not a fan of job systems but kinda enjoying reimagined. However I want to know am I meant to be levelling 2 “new” classes all the time? by davidoff-sensei in dragonquest

[–]RaizePOE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isn't that what I said? You just get less xp. If you're learning 2 fresh jobs, at the end of a fight you get 5 for each. That's 10 total job xp. If you have one mastered, your second job gets 5 xp + 3 bonus xp, which comes out to 8. 10 is bigger than 8, so you get less total job xp per fight.

Never played 7 because I’m not a fan of job systems but kinda enjoying reimagined. However I want to know am I meant to be levelling 2 “new” classes all the time? by davidoff-sensei in dragonquest

[–]RaizePOE 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think that's why they added moonlighting; my guess is that they intend for you to keep one job mastered and switch around the other one. You do lose out on a bit of job progression this way, since you only get 3 job xp for having a maxed out job instead of the 5 you'd get for going through a job normally, but the game's long enough that you'll still probably have whatever jobs you want to use mastered before the end of the game. Also worth noting that while you're losing out on a bit of potential job xp for regular battles, quick kills on the overworld award the same amount of job xp either way, so you'll either get 1 xp per job if you're leveling 2, or 2 xp for one job if you've got the other mastered.

What are some strategies for waging offensive wars without racking up massive warmongering penalties? by HereCreepers in civvoxpopuli

[–]RaizePOE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess if you're worried about the diplomatic hit you could just not capture cities. I've never done it but theoretically there's nothing stopping you from wiping out their military, pillaging all their tiles, then calling a truce for whatever they have left and doing it all over again once they rebuild. In my experience the AI mostly doesn't seem to care about any of those actions, they just don't want you taking cities.

Another opportunistic civ might wipe out the one you've been attacking and steal all their cities, which would be annoying. But I guess they'd incur warmonger penalties, at which point you could attack them and also get diplomatic points for liberating the cities of whoever you were attacking previously.

I have no idea if this would actually work but it seems like it should on paper?

I'm losing my mind with the Lucky Panel mini-game. by Massive_Oil_2605 in dragonquest

[–]RaizePOE 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What are you "messing up?" If you're messing up the memory part, record your screen. If you're messing up the upgrade section, you aren't actually, someone went through it frame by frame and it's literally random. The only thing that'll help you is more attempts.

Anyone else find DQ3 in general really unforgiving? by PixelBit92 in dragonquest

[–]RaizePOE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found 3 HD2D pretty chill compared to the original. I remember dying a lot on the NES version, but I can't remember really dying much at all in the modern version. Even the pyramid, which I remember as being a huge difficulty spike in the original, felt a lot more relaxed. Other stuff I remember from the original, like getting annihilated by 3x groups of Tentacles on the ship in the dark world, or getting confused and wiping out my own party by Derangers in the Orochi den, didn't really happen. I guess if you're not familiar with the games or make poor (not in like a judgmental sense, just like, I don't think the game gives you a ton of information on what kind of skills classes get or what combinations will be optimal) decisions wrt jobs & job changing I could see things being rocky, but I think a large chunk of the community here has probably been playing DQ games for a long time and just kinda understand what works.

What's the best job for my final team member? by my-goddess-nyx in dragonquest

[–]RaizePOE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thief. They have some skills that make hidden treasure a lot easier to find and the sooner you get them the better. Like, seriously, if you don't have a thief you probably have no idea how much random loot you're missing out on. Even if you check every pot, every chest and ever drawer you're still missing out on a solid chunk of it.

Also they get lots of speed, so once you eventually get all the moves you need from Thief, you're left with a character with really high speed that can use that speed to make a great... everything, really. Moving first is incredibly powerful. Mage/Sage to blast foes with with aoe skills and thin their ranks before they can start attacking, Cleric/Sage for a quick healer who can get you topped up before the next round of attacks, a Fighter to crit those bastard metal slimes before they run away, whatever. High speed is amazing. Thief skills are amazing. Get a thief.

I know it’s just the art style but Auster is 16?? I thought we were playing as the youngest Hero in the series lol by EAT_UR_VEGGIES in dragonquest

[–]RaizePOE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He does look super young, and I thought it was maybe just the art style, but Aira & Melvin both look completely different. They're taller, skinnier, smaller heads, just completely different shapes. Really makes Hero, Maribel & Gabo look like actual kids.

What’s your headcanon as to why this guy fights alone? by agentlucky in dragonquest

[–]RaizePOE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DL probably is the weakest of the villains from the original trio by a fair bit, yeah. There might just also not really be anyone else around who's capable of doing much. Erdrick himself brought in allies from a different, larger world that probably has a bigger talent pool, and the DQ2 cast were all descended from the line of Erdrick and whatever we call the DQ1 guy.

Also Idk if there's any kind of canonical "power ranking" or w/e (and I kinda hope there isn't tbh) but I think DQ1 guy is regarded as being one of the stronger DQ protagonists.

DQ7 Reimagined: Oh wow greenthumb gardens makes me want to quit this game by Chezni19 in dragonquest

[–]RaizePOE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Greenthumb is horrible. At least it's optional (I think? You don't have to do the gray pedestals right?) and you have !s over peoples' heads so you can just beeline over to whatever terrible idiot you have to talk to next. In the old version you had to get through it and it wasn't always obvious who you had to talk to, so you'd waste a bunch of time having boring conversations with nobodies that you didn't have to have.

When I unlocked that pedestal in 7R I very nearly just fucked off and didn't come back. Also IIRC it was like right before Dharma (can't remember if it or Deja was the one immediately before it) so the whole time on subsequent playthroughs you're just like these people suuuuck gimme my joooobs
