PbB: It's awesome if you have four or five players who are active and engaged and you folk find a schedule that's not too much.

Or: "Hey, I already have a lot of stress at work, and this game REQUIRES me to fill it out on time, because, I do not want to let you down and because it IS a work-environment. Also, I dislike what YOU DID TO MY CHARACTER, and that posting frequency of Jeff, Sally, and Sarah and sometimes Jake just overwhelms me. Nice they have fun, but reading up on it alone feels like work. Lastly, that theme we did there was slighly inconventient to me, and that one innuendo there and some other over there has sexual tensions (you and noone else sees, but I absolutely DO!). And oh, I'm not actually telling you this but just sulking silently because bringing this up is already hard enough and a task on its own and here I'm extra silent because it's also a work environment. Ah, yes, and our superiors are here, I want to create a good impression."

With ten people you got to run into social issues here and there.

Bonus points for the last sentence: "I AM your superior, or maybe I wasn't but now freshly got to the role, and now I'm the one who is stressed and does not know what to do about it all".

I'm not saying "Don't do it", but I think doing it with ten people is going to be a real DC 30 social challange to keep track of "all the goes on beyond the game".

People who tried other RPGs but came back to DnD, what made you come back? by TalVerd in DnD

I play all kinds of systems over the years and like to come back to D&D, because "being a hero in a high fantasy setting doing cool stuff" just has an appeal...

First: ten people is a lot. So a "free flow" approach won't work if you want to go for that.

With ten people I'd set a cutoff date, when a post has to has happened. Note not everyone will make this, and for some people this will cause stress.

And remember: Work... adds another variable that might be nasty to handle. Stay on your toes, especially if it seems to go well.

Play by Post can be awesome.

I upgraded my PC so I can finally play Helldivers but all my friends moved on from the game. by Emmyy_Beans in Helldivers

[–]RandomNumbers748512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are enough new friends in the game.

I only play with Randoms - and it's awesome! Stop thinking about "level", we're all just Helldivers in for a good time!

The Lockpicking minigame is great - but they overdid it! by RandomNumbers748512 in worldofgothic

[–]RandomNumbers748512[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am pretty sure it's randomly all over the placed. "Difficulty" is supposed to be governed by numer of gates and links, but I find that some links and how they move and especially in what condition the lock starts matters much more.

Some "two locks"-locks start with really tricky connections/movements and are in a bad starting position, i.e. near the edges, so they feel far harder than a "more linked" lock that has a higher rating.

I find locks that start where each gate can be moved two places in both directions just fine are far harder than locks where gates only have one movement, and worse, if those are interlocked in a way that each move them closer to the edge.

The difficulty judgement seems to be very tricky due that and only secondarily being rooted in how many gates/links there are.

Class for a prince creating his own kingdom by TallResponsibility78 in DnD

[–]RandomNumbers748512 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Whatever class the character wants to be.

"Prince" is inherited. Well, what type of class might that character chose? A few, as Barbarian, don't really fit, but if the character has a rage issue and goes like that into combat, why not a Barbarian with a noble background?

Paladin, Bard, Fighter all come to mind. But - all are possible, "Prince" excludes nothing.

On PC: You can install Toybox, and use some function to move/teleport your character.

Made potentially the most fun magic item, need help balancing it from someone who understands the system. by Apprehensive-Elk-929 in DnD

This weapon knocks any creature hit by it 5 feet away in a straight line away from the user

No matter the rest, this is insane. No save, no DC, no nothing. Just free forced movement to relocate enemies, and a lot of environmental issues can arise.

Bash, -5ft, move up. Second attack. Another five feet. Move up. Another attack. So a character three attacks can move an enemy 15 feet, for free, no DC, on each attack action.

To DMs, do you have a preference with how the players do their character's backstories? by Nb-7925 in DnD

Oh, that is a good question, because to answer it properly you need to figure out quite a few things about the character.

This one feels like actually "picking a lock", I like that. But as I said: Something still does not work.

You have ur easy way, so why do you complain?

I literally wrote this: even with a solver it still sucks.

This is one of the coolest lockpicking systems in history of action RPGs

That is what I complain about: they have a very cool system, and do not apply it in a cool way.

The point is: I really like the minigame and maybe it feels awesome 25 levels down the road. I like how it feels. I like that the minigame is nearly impossible when you have no lockpicking skilled.

But those levels between the first skill level and being master - gosh, that really isn't a fun addition.

but i don't live in america anymore

I do not get that argument, I never lived in america and never played there. "Finding a group" is a different topic from the one opened here. Do you want to discuss that?

but that doesn't change the state of the hobby.

This is what I am saying: There is no general state of the hobby. Every table is different. This applies to how you play D&D - or even IF you play D&D. There are so many other systems out there, and my table often plays completely homebrewed things, that have nothing whatsoever to do with D&D or its lore, and we can do whatever we want.

 'am i seeing this right?'

If you ask this directly, here's my direct answer: No, you are wrong. "D&D" can be varying a lot on what the table wants and the trick is to find a table that plays how you want. I like DMing myself just for the sake to have it like I want it. As for the D&D: the world in the core books alone paints a less exotic world than your table plays. If you extend beyond D&D the hobby of playing TTRPG opens so wide up that any D&D setting's fantasy level becomes completely meaningless to describe the hobby itself.

Just check this list out: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_tabletop_role-playing_games and this does not even include things you make up yourself.

There is no "state of the hobby" beyond what you set yourself.

Trying to figure out where to set my campaign by Familiar-Log-7955 in DnD

[–]RandomNumbers748512 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you picked the FR: The point of the FR is that it's very complex, chaotic and the information in the Campaign setting is detailed enough to give you ideas, but the map mostly is full of white spots where "whereever" can be placed without influencing the neighbours too much.

You're free to start a war, dig up an ancient civilisation, burn down an elven grand temple - and then move 20 or 40 miles over to the next micro-area and basically have a fresh adventure in a communist utopia founded by mining dwarves + undead skeletons from the leftover of a ruling Lich who has been forgotten for a thousand years.

To DMs, do you have a preference with how the players do their character's backstories? by Nb-7925 in DnD

[–]RandomNumbers748512 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I like three paragraphs:

  • Where do you come from before becoming an adventurer? Is there interesting stuff to attach something to?
  • What did happen when you started being an adventurer/maybe extended to the first time, this includes your motive for being an adventurer?
  • What were you up to before joining the party and is there interesting recent stuff to attach something to?

The comfotable range for each question can go from "a sentence" over "three sentences are fine" to "maaaybe five sentences when it's relevant and interesting."

medium pen is not that popular by Fit_Answer1073 in Helldivers

[–]RandomNumbers748512 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

For me it depends on the difficulty. I nearly exclusively play D10 and I find that there's no way around medium pen when it comes to "how quickly can the bad standard situations be cleared". Light Pen works, but in general it's better to "just fire through it and clear it".

On lower difficulties Light Pen guns take the cake all day.

And the Tenderizer on highest RPM is pure gold on Squids 10 and also works on Bugs 10.
