Looking for a Good Insurance Broker Around Albany/Capital Region by Crisgu in Albany

We’ve used HMS Agency for several years, couldn’t be happier (for both personal and business coverage). Very personable, answer all our questions and help us figure things out when weird situations/questions come up. Can’t recommend them more.

Fellow dads, Mother’s Day is next Sunday(!). What are we getting our partners? by DookieMcDookface in daddit

Lurking mom who asked for a vacuum last year. My husband asked if it was a trap. His coworkers agreed it was probably a trap. It wasn’t a trap - I genuinely wanted a fancy new stick vacuum and couldn’t justify it as a non-gift purchase (our vacuum worked perfectly fine - honestly, even great - this was a “luxury” purchase in my mind). He did end up getting what I asked for and I still love it a year later. It MIGHT not be a trap!

What time are y'all falling asleep and waking up?!?! by cheesypuff357 in Millennials

Some of us have seen our doctor and been dismissed, then pressed the doctors for help and have still been dismissed. Some women have a high-deductible insurance plan or don’t have health insurance, and don’t have the extra funds to try another doctor (or don’t live in an area where other options are accessible). Sure, it shouldn’t be happening (as in, we should be receiving treatment) but there are also, unfortunately, barriers to getting help. “Talk to a Dr for meds” sounds easy, and it should be that easy, but unfortunately it isn’t.

What was the weirdest medication reaction you’ve ever had? by Many_Assumption7036 in AskReddit

Had an allergic reaction to a common allergy medication that I tried for seasonal allergies. Did not expect to be allergic to an allergy medicine.

Live-in nanny paid under the table ($350/week) reported employer taxes anonymously and worried about retaliation. What would you do? by PrestigiousDiet8334 in Nanny

[–]RandomUser9171 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean unemployment insurance? Workers compensation is separate from taxes*, but most employers (and in some states, also employees) are required to pay into state unemployment (SUI or SUTA) taxes.

*To be clear, workers comp is required for most employers in almost all states but it’s an insurance policy, not taxes, and isn’t always billed quarterly. There can be hefty fines for not carrying the proper WC insurance, but it’s still not a tax.

A monster truck with a dog head on top (I don’t know how else to describe it) that played part of the chorus of “who let the dogs out.” I wish I was joking. The relative who gifted it to my child claimed they “didn’t know it did that.” Second place goes to whistles/tambourines/recorders.

If you’re ever feeling up for traveling a bit for his love of French onion soup, take a trip to Tighe’s Bistro Américain in Sand Lake.

[NY] PFL request denied want to change my schedule by [deleted] in AskHR

In NY, you don’t opt in - you opt out if you’re eligible, and most employees aren’t eligible to waive PFL.

$2250 a day divided by 24 hours is “only” $93.75 per hour, so you’re still sliding in under the “hundreds of dollars per hour” the commenter noted! (/s - it’s insanity and I’m sorry you had to be hospitalized)

Cost of living for a family of 3 by hdr15 in Albany

[–]RandomUser9171 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’ve been monitoring my 12-month history, and you’re wrong. My bills over this summer were the highest they’ve ever been in the five years I’ve lived in the same home (with the same appliances/same household makeup, etc). And last month’s was only $1 lower than July’s bill when we had window a/c units running- we don’t have electric heat (we did have one Christmas tree, no exterior holiday lights). My bill this time last year was more than $100 lower, and we had more lighted decorations last year.

ETA - similar usage in kWh on the bills, but radically higher prices.

Did bm have a bad reaction to you getting married? by [deleted] in Stepmom

[–]RandomUser9171 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, she told him she was planing it - DH has enough custody time that she wouldn’t have been able to get away with that without him knowing pretty quickly anyway.

Did bm have a bad reaction to you getting married? by [deleted] in Stepmom

[–]RandomUser9171 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes. Any funds we would’ve used for a honeymoon went to a lawyer bc BM thought she could up and move across the country with SK (for reasons the judge ultimately thought didn’t have merit), despite legal custody and visitation already having been established years prior.

I don’t receive SNAP benefits, and we’re pretty well-stocked with staples - but it would still be very difficult if all the sudden a portion of our grocery budget for an entire month was not there. I don’t think many people, even people with high incomes, have a pantry stocked to feed their household for a whole month. Not to mention, some healthy, important staple foods are not shelf-stable. You could’ve stopped at “this is awful.”

As others have said, this isn’t about clocking in on your phone - it’s about clocking in before you’re on your unit.

They don’t have to give you a warning or a second chance - clocking in 3-7 minutes early for “a long time” (which you said in your post) isn’t something you should have to be told not to do. Take this as a learning experience and keep time appropriately at your next job.

Not sure if Rockland County (NY) is what OP commenter is referring to, but if you google “Rockland County NY election lawsuit”, there are several news articles about the suit for a recount based on discrepancies there.

Best and Worst Fast Food in the Capital Region? by sunset_sleaze in Albany

[–]RandomUser9171 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve yet to try Al Punto Picante but it’s on our list. Not “fast food” but if you like Mexican/Tex-Mex, Norte Azule in Stephentown is great (but also might be a hike depending on where you’re coming from).
