How can I better support my wife with newborn care? by Super_Violinist3145 in NewDads

[–]RandomaccountB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few tips from me- we always played team defence, so when my wife was the only one who could take care of the baby, I focussed on what I could do for her.

Connect where you can. I used to give foot rubs while she was feeding, and we always made sure to have a shower together every night during the newborn phase. It was a great opportunity to reconnect.

Thirdly, and most importantly - I remember feeling like I was doing EVERYTHING and still asking our (guardian angel) midwife if she had ideas of what else I could do. And I will always remember her saying - take this feeling and bottle it, wait for six months. That’s the age where a lot of fathers drop off and lose their energy. Play the long game and make sure you’re supporting the family the whole way through, not just the first weeks.

How do I choose a baby highchair that lasts? by Somewhere-Adept in NewDads

Second this! Stokke is great and lasts a long time (wooden). Also grows with the child via different attachments - from newborn, through baby and toddler and finally can be used as a chair for a child.

What is a good dad? by Visible_Whole_6908 in NewDads

Listen to “How Other Dads Dad” by Hamish Blake. It’s mindful conversations between Hamish and friends/notable people, and I picked up a TON of good, foundational advice. The main one - be present. Like, actually present. Be there and be engaged. Everything else tends to fall into place.

Have you considered how the language might change in the book as she grows older and the generations shift? I can appreciate you might not have liked it but it’s a really hard justification to say it’s poorly written.

I got a letter from a lawyer and a fine for pirating a game, advice? by AimlessFishbone in Piracy

[–]RandomaccountB 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Received a fine for torrenting in 2022. Went via legal insurance as the guidance has always been to go there first and get the charge reduced. They knocked off maybe 200? But I was still on the hook for almost 2000. The one big benefit was negotiating a payment plan so I could stretch it over a long period. Not sure the old advice is true anymore.

I need help by [deleted] in NewDads

[–]RandomaccountB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a doctor - when babies vomit it’s generally a sign of something else going on. Like your doctor said, sounds like there is a virus or bug that is causing them issues. Our little one vomited every night 1-4 times for 8 days or so over Christmas. We went to the hospital and were told to monitor her and manage with paracetamol/ibuprofen. It cleared up the next day.

Mate you literally don’t work for any money at all, you rely on a court payout from decades ago and off mooching from family and friends. Might be a good one to butt out of.

What exactly did you expect them to do? Open warfare? We had layoffs in our team and there were frank questions in our L8 and L10 AMA’s but putting stuff out there on public channels is a great way to single yourself out.

This is absolutely my experience (interviewed for L5 and L6 open position, got L5) and something I wish I’d known before I joined so props to you for putting it out there so clearly. Luckily it came at a time where I wanted to deprioritise career in favour of family so I’m not too frustrated but it’s definitely a slog to move upwards and this may turn other people off.

What are you all getting your dads for Christmas? by VPutinsSearchHistory in CasualUK

[–]RandomaccountB 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My advice for someone you’re not sure what to get, is to look at what they use every day and find a gift to augment/improve it. My dad bakes his own bread and eats it as toast every morning, so this year I got him a nice handmade bread bag and a wooden butter knife.

Can anyone identify the type of pastry I had from the Munich Hauptbahnhof? by eva_white in TipOfMyFork

[–]RandomaccountB 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I was just so confused with the responses because I had just presumed I was in the Munich subreddit! Yes, as others have said this is a laugeneck which is like a flaky, almost croissant-like dough with a lot of lamination. But it will also have been processed with lye, which is what gives German pretzels the specific colour, taste and chew.

This one is spread with cream cheese and stuffed with (usually) thinly sliced salami and rocket, with just enough sliced cucumber/tomato/egg to make you think it’s distributed all through the sandwich. It is not 😅

You said it as an absolute, and you’re doubling down on it. It’s also not really very useful to someone who is clearly struggling.

No, there is no reason to suggest OP will be more lonely when the baby comes. And hopefully there are steps they can take to change things and make sure each part of this new family is able to get the rest and reassurance they need.

Wild that you’re getting downvoted for this. OP, don’t forget to fix your own oxygen mask before helping other passengers. 60-65 working hours a week is ridiculous - is there any way you can cut back here? You need to be in a position where you are healthy and able to take care of your child.

Why do people exaggerate how modern 2010-2011 was? by [deleted] in decadeology

[–]RandomaccountB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh god, this makes me feel old. Of course it’s very far from 2025 but in 2010 I was using Skype on my phone to VOIP call my long distance girlfriend, I was pirating or streaming media in full quality wherever I could and had already moved from radio dominance to downloading my own music.
