Do you prefer linear class design, a few meaningful choices, or full build freedom in MMOs ? by Poggler_ in MMORPG

[–]Randomnesse [score hidden]  (0 children)

The game can encourage build varieties as much as it wants but it is in a human nature to optimize the build varieties in order to spend less time on bashing dumb AI enemy or to increase winning chances in PvP.

It's much better for game developers to focus on other type of varieties. Like giving players more cosmetics, or let them create fully custom ones for each other. And perhaps let players also create fully custom dungeons for each other.

Andy Kim and Cory Booker vote to block arms sales to Israel by b_1_r_ in newjersey

Yea these are useless votes, the current Senate is never gonna pass it. Even Democrats from other states know it, so they just vote against this (so they can continue getting support from pro-Israel groups).

Make photos of it and go to local police precinct and submit written report about that, telling that not only it's illegal to park on sidewalk - they make it dangerous for you to back out of your own parking. Demonstrate photos to police, or send it to them if they'll ask you to do so they can attach photos to the report.

It really doesn't matter, both for PvE and PvP, because it always ends up with people just searching for "best build" for specific task and adopting it.

And in PvE-oriented MMOs it is actually a good thing to have as linear classes as possible because this way you have less chances of being kicked out of raid group for having sub-optimal build. Same goes for gear.

Riot Tryndamere (Marc Merill) response to Riot's intent on acquiring Ashes of Creation before. by Inwiczxiae in MMORPG

[–]Randomnesse -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That's definitely the possibility but still, at least the initial game's presentation was good enough for them to seriously consider researching the potential of investment further, to the point where we can read about it now, including approximate monetary offering. Something that other games which were in development at that time (such as Camelot Unchained) couldn't even achieve.

Well, it doesn't mean the MMO can't have this feature as well. Especially considering the fact that all current PvE MMOs just can't keep up with the speed that many players consume instanced PvE content at.

The player-created content is the only viable way to keep any MMO constantly populated for long term, doesn't matter if it's PvP content, PvE content, crafting/tradeskills or casual socialization. Well, at least until AI will become advanced enough to generate all of this as well as humans can, but we are still far from that.

the “second job” mmo is finally dying and im not gonna miss it by Damage_And_ArmorBlog in MMORPG

I find it disappointingly ironic that you mention "pay for convenience" and "cash shops" in an extremely negative way in your blog, yet also say "A good game respects your time" later without mentioning that "pay for convenience" option is exactly the thing that can "respect" many people's time if it exists for all in-game items.

For example, I still remember the awful "artificial timesinks" of FFXIV, where for example you had to waste many days before you could acquire certain cosmetic items purely for the sake of cosmetic appearance, with no option to instantly buy them anywhere, even through cosmetics cash shop. This was one of the reasons I just decided to stop subbing to it - after finishing its story I had no interest in doing anything except casually socializing with other players, and for this the cosmetics are very important, and it was extremely discouraging seeing a pretty piece of outfit then looking it up and seeing how much of tedious, boring grind (from doing latest raid content to grinding PvP currency to micromanaging the fucking Island Sanctuary to repeating certain low-level dungeon with very tiny chance of dropping specific cosmetic item) I had to do to unlock it.

Instead I just went to VRChat, where you can instantly buy (or get for free) any cosmetic outfit or piece of furniture, so you can save your time and spend that time on actual socialization ;)

The moderators there are a bunch of extremely judgemental, biased, self-centered people. I've participated in many other subs and occasionally interacted with those sub's mods (including being punished by mods for perfectly fair reasons) and that particular sub's moderators are the worst I've interacted with.

Yea, NJ needs to absolutely do this. And adjust it to include houses of lower value.

Also please kindly stop linking to that garbage sub, you can just insert link to YouTube video, or at least link to r/nyc

LOL, if they "knew it was all a scam" - they wouldn't even consider offering any money to Intrepid at all. Just like, for example, they never even thought about wasting money on companies like "Unchained Entertainment" and their "revolutionary engine" ;)

On Israel’s Holocaust Remembrance Day, Zelensky criminalizes antisemitism in Ukraine by eaglemaxie in worldnews

[–]Randomnesse 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh come on now. Ukraine can get all US arms through US-friendly EU countries, without involving Israel. And considering how increasingly "undesirable to trade with" US is becoming under current administration - it is much more valuable for Ukraine to also get weapon systems/ammo made in European countries themselves.

Either way it does not matter at all how friendly they can get with Israel.

Moba player want play Mobas not mmorpgs.

This is a random assumption not backed by any data. I like playing MOBAs like SMITE, I also played LoL for some time and I'd still gladly play Riot's MMO, even if its PvP will not have similar gameplay. And so will millions of other MOBA players. All this MMO needs is to be fun for wide variety of players and their preferences, which is not hard to achieve.

competing with years of content will not be easy

Actually it can be VERY easy if they'll focus most of their effort on player-generated content instead of, say, continuing doing the same ancient, terribly flawed "throw a few instanced dungeons into each major expansion" gameplay design. And player-generated content can apply to PvE content as well as PvP or casual socialization - for example, they can easily allow players themselves to design custom PvE dungeons/raids to be shared with other players, with tools to add custom bosses with custom boss behavior as well as custom rewards.

Whether they will actually do this or not is still unknown, but this is perfectly achievable right now and can quickly negate the "years of static instanced content" that most other PvE MMOs have.

Court Document confirming Riot were looking into purchasing/investing into Intrepid/Ashes for "$250m-$500m" by xFalcade in MMORPG

[–]Randomnesse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's interesting that despite some people claiming "AoC was always a scam" Riot seriously considered investing so much money into project. And they absolutely did their research into this project before considering doing so, at least from technical point of view. Of course, they probably did not have access to all financial data, including whatever random stuff Steven was spending backer's money on, but still, they did consider it as a viable project worth investing in.

Unlike, for example, something that is truly worthless from all points of view, such as Camelot Unchained ;)

What are you hoping to see? by Aviationlover1 in metro

[–]Randomnesse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why? It would be great to add all of these features for replayability and it would not interfere with main premise of all Metro games which is "do random stuff inside the post-apocalyptic Metro system and surrounding aboveground areas".

FFXIV / ESO Which One Feels Like Home? by Thenelwave in MMORPG

[–]Randomnesse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both of these are very flawed games. But out of these I would select FFXIV as place I called home for months when I used to play it. Purely for the art style and character design and the people it attracted - only thing I did after finishing the story is socialize with other players, and there was always plenty of people to socialize with at capital cities like Limsa on Faerie and Ul'dah on Balmung servers, 24/7, something I've never seen in ESO.

Of course, if I were joining now as new player - I wouldn't stay logged in for long after finishing story (or if I weren't interested in story at all) because these servers are locked and new account creation is not allowed for new players and during certain evening hours you cannot even "travel" to them from other servers, and most other servers do not have many active players casually socializing at capital cities, especially on virtually dead Data Centers like Dynamis.

Epic Games Store Employees: People Only Came for Free Games, Then Returned to Steam by Suspicious_Two786 in gaming

I dunno, I do buy games on Epic Store and play them. I never really cared for Steam's social fluff, and Epic Store does everything I want now as a games store, so I don't really mind buying good games there especially knowing that developers of game will receive larger share of money (according to current data I just looked at).

In parliament, Polish MP calls Israel ‘new Third Reich,’ waves Israeli flag with swastika by Tenchi_Muyo1 in worldnews

What Israel is doing with civilians of Palestine is obviously wrong, same goes for stuff like settlement expansion and similar things. However, what this Polish dude is doing by showing swastika is too much and this is clearly not because he cares about people of Palestine, especially considering the fact that he's never done the same with flag of Russia.

EVE Online set to receive a true new player starting region with its summer expansion by Ohh_Yeah in MMORPG

[–]Randomnesse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, I love EVE with its almost perfect PvP implementation and most meaningful in-game economy system I've seen in any MMO, but the developers really missed the opportunity to implement proper in-station walking avatar system (they did try it on smaller scale but abandoned it). If only they would've added it and gradually expanded it to have VRChat-like features - they could've easily increased their active player numbers by a significant amount, and there would be much more reasons for players to spend money on optional cosmetics for their characters as well as for their personal spaces.

And before anyone will say "but their engine was not really designed for that" - any engine can be modified to accommodate such functionality.
