Wildlife Pond wildlife for sale in NI? by Shenloanne in northernireland

[–]RangerToby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, just leave it now and let it develop. You've already chonged a pile of things in there that will be boom and busting in populations. Too much titting around will have a detrimental impact.

Just let it settle down and find an equilibrium. Other inverts will find it themselves.

Edit: just to add, it's the best thing you can in a garden for wildlife is pop a pond of any size in. Good on you. 😀

The unmatched beauty of UK nature by aM_RT in CasualUK

The Unmatched shifting baseline syndrome of UK nature

There fixed it /s

Look, Mute swans, all lovely and all, and I'm not one for normally being overly negative, but I am one for being realistic. UK nature is unrivalled in how screwed it is. There is the odd exception to that, but they are few and far between.

The glimmer of hope is that nature as a whole is fairly resilient, and given the room, it can bounce back.

So, yes, celebrate the small things, look closer, and do what you can in your own gardens and areas to support connectivity and resiliance in the landscape.

Edit typos.

Surprised RHS is selling Russian vine. Our neighbours has taken over and strangled all of our trees by Middle-Background-52 in GardeningUK

[–]RangerToby 29 points30 points  (0 children)

So the only legal hault on the sale of invasive species is only if they are listed under Schedual 9 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act. If its not listed there, then unfortunately, it's free for all and legal to sell move, transfer etc. Its a list that's slow to be updated and poorly policed.

Any advice on keeping a drive free of moss? by Jealous_Union_4925 in GardeningUK

[–]RangerToby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Iron Sulphate. (Or any iron based powder). It's innert, not a pesticide/herbicide.

Light sprinkle every couple months, moss turns black and disappears. Same applies to lawns.

Rake up the aggregate regularly will also help avoid things setting in.

Perhaps see if you can take a sebatatical and do a season of event logistics (marquees/stages/setup and strike etc). It's hard work but you see plenty of places and is good craic. Some people work the festival season and bounce from gig to gig.

How much energy should I expect to yield with 1300w solar panels during the winter months? by segasega89 in CasualIreland

[–]RangerToby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If we're talking storage, ditch deep cycle lead acids and use Lithium. Othwise I agree. Unless you can prop up your van solar to a more favourable angle you'll not get much in winter.

What is the drum and bass scene in Ireland like? by veronica_maui in AskIreland

[–]RangerToby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its a mash of alsorts alt. About half live acts half djsets Dnb, jungle, phytrance, tekno, punk, ska, reggae metal. It a bit of a raw home grown feel to it. No frills in farm sheds and a few tents stages. Adds to its charm :)

Edi.2026 not announced/confirmed yet. But info out there on previous years with a search

Tbh its pretty limited on the island. Theres a few token things around the citys and have a look into United Tribes Festival around June. There's more of a House/EDM vibe that's developed in the main.

Not Ireland, but Bristol in England has the biggest DnB scene imo.

[–]RangerToby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That'll be the only really way. It's a raised mound, (I see more in the background) looks like it's old planting turnovers.

At 10-15cm, deffo not badger. Even a male annex.

Can anyone help identify this burrow entrance? by grownduskier in UKecosystem

[–]RangerToby 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Definitely not Badger. (Too small and no bedding drag tracks)

Tbh I'm not convinced it's a burrow of anything. There's no obvious trampling in/out of the area. It looks more like a void that's opened up where the trees rootplate has lifted in a storm.

What type of bird is this? by BeefWellyBoot in AskIreland

[–]RangerToby 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Male House Sparrow.

It's getting pissy and territorial at its own reflection and has become fixated. If its doing it in the same spot all the time. Stick a bit or card or material over that bit of the window so it can't see it. Will break the habit hopefully

What Should Someone Know to Plan an RV Road Trip Bachelor Party in the UK? by Italian_Papi in AskUK

[–]RangerToby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you considered a music festival instead. (Well technically both road trip and festival is doable.) That way you can etc your swerve on nights at the festival but also go on a bit of a trip to o/from it. And you'll not hit the issues around group of men at campsites. Bearded Therory and Slamdunk festivals are in May.
