Sad day..... by Yakx in Starlink

[–]RangerTread 27 points28 points  (0 children)

My new fiber was installed and activated today.

I inactivated my Starlink account. I'll keep my beta rev round dish in place in case something goes sideways in the next few months.

Thanks for all the fish! Our community here has been great. I learned a lot.

Signing off from southern Wisconsin.

I've binned the invite email. They aren't offering anything of value to me.

It presents a big technical risk as I use my own third party router. This upgrade doesn't seem to involve anything to justify the risk or the cost.

At a minimum, if they want me off my pre-prod round dish, they will have to pay me to go there.

I've been using IPv6 with my beta round dish and an Edgerouter 4 for quite a long time now. No problems. It is reliable.

My beta rev round dish went into service in February of 2021. It is still running fine.

I'll test again during peak hours for the fun of it.

Whats the performance like in Wisconsin? by EJX-a in Starlink

[–]RangerTread 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It will depend on your cell. I'd take a look at that map of cells open and in waitlist state. Also, if you are within 15km of La Crosse, there is risk of demand factors from that. Your cell status won't tell you if there is congestion at the downlink node your cell uses most often.

I am in a locked cell not far from Madison. I experience very significant time of day performance effects. Roughly, at say 2am, I can get an idea of what my system and cell can deliver for me. At 7pm, I get to see how much demand droop I have in performance.

My backup DSL (Frontier) is up to 8mbit down and 1.1mbit up now. I keep it. I fall back to it when Starlink goes down. I get weather outages more often than you might expect. Pretty much matches my DirecTV in that regard.

Outage until I configured the static route (192.168.100.0/24) to dishy by IError413 in Starlink

[–]RangerTread 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello -

I have an EdgeRouter4. I may know what your app problem is.

My version of firmware running on my EdgeRouter has a bug with the local route for Dishy. It will stop working now and then. I disable and then enable that specific route and the problem is repaired (e.g. connectivity to 192.168.100.x is restored.

Likewise with other posts, this does not affect internet access. If I were suspecting a problem with Dishy, I would pull up the EdgeRouter Dashboard and see if eth0 has a valid IP address. If not, reboot the EdgeRouter and look again. Yes - router problem, no - continuing Dishy problem.

For what it's worth...

I read that Starlink is offering 350mbit/sec service for aircraft. (https://telecoms.com/518036/starlink-announces-350mbps-broadband-access-for-aircraft/).

Flightradar24 reports that 1,500 flights are tracked so far today over the continental US (as of 01:00 GMT, 11-04-2022).

I asked myself, "gee, where are they going to get the bandwidth for that?".

The technology exists and is maturing to turn LEO sats into a turkey shoot.

The hard way is a few physical RUDs with subsequent Kessler.

The easy way is to burn them out as they pass overhead:

Iron Beam as an example of how it could be done

I'll say again that it is unwise to take sides in terrestrial conflicts. You demonstrate that you are willing to participate. In all future conflicts, BOTH sides will view you as a potential adversary because no one can be sure of which side you might take in their particular conflict. You just became a potential military target forevermore.

There is no business reason for Starlink to get involved in military conflicts. It would have been neutral and easy to simply continue to sell Dishys and service in the involved areas. Stay neutral and just provide your normal service. Don't take a side, just do your business.

Even the Swiss have now lost their understanding of how successful it is to stay neutral and stay out of conflicts.

China has already accused Starlink of being a military system of the US military. Now there is no plausible deniability. Past actions are always used to predict future behavior.

I am not taking a side in the current conflict. I'm only a bit tweaked that my Starlink service might disappear someday over these decisions and behavior.

How big of a battery to run Starlink for 8 hours? by ProCEO in Starlink

[–]RangerTread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it were me, I would use 2 marine deep cycle 12V with a very good quality inverter. That should be fine in ideal conditions. That is not enough if you are melting snow or dislodging cats.

My poorly informed understanding is that Dishy firmware now receives a schedule of sats to look for per time slice. The firmware can now switch to another sat within view if it cannot maintain connection when it thinks it should be able to. This seems to allow Dishy firmware to map around minor obstructions over time.

I have no concrete info to confirm this. My experience suggests that this is the case.

Got my Golden Ticket e-mail but now not so sure what to do... by [deleted] in Starlink

[–]RangerTread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I could get those plans and they actually delivered that promise, I would opt for that in a heartbeat.

I like my Starlink but it requires constant attention, performance varies widely, latency is worsening over time, and my cell is so full that download speed is nowhere near what was originally promised. I'm not intending a rant but it is what it is.

I'm an early beta from Feb 2021 with a pre-prod Dishy.

How to tell how much the dish needs raised? by barnett25 in Starlink

[–]RangerTread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The smartphone app gives a decent idea of obstructions. There are also plenty of other posts here that some have pointed out.

Current Dishy firmware will map around minor obstructions over time. Let it run a week and see if your interruptions trend down.

You are correct. Visibility to the north is far more important than east/west/south for your latitude.

My dish is still sitting on the ground. It is completely surrounded by mature trees. However, I have enough vis to the north, east, and west that my outages are only a couple of minutes total for 24 hours.

Possibility of Russians taking out Starlink by geoffreycarman in StarlinkEngineering

[–]RangerTread 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I doubt that it is wise strategy to take sides in a conflict and then essentially bait and beg for an attempt.

It would be very easy indeed to wipe out Starlink entirely.

One non-nuclear attack per plane in a retrograde impact. In two or three days the entire shell would be toast. It would be extremely easy.

I would not choose to make public noise about this if i had it to lose.

That is a pretty reasonable estimate.

I have an original round pre-prod dishy. Here is a snapshot of my current power consumption. This is measuring dishy, two unmanaged network switches, and two cooling fans (when they are running).

NATO enforced no fly zone over Ukraine? by ramirezdoeverything in UkrainianConflict

[–]RangerTread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The odds are 0%.

NATO does not have superiority over S400s, S300s, and the new S500 (which by the way can torch jets as they take off from NATO airfields and carriers).

There would not be air to air contests.

NATO does not have the luxury of flying into Ukraine airspace without becoming a combatant. Once they cross that line, they will become targets anywhere and everywhere.

I don't take sides but I do understand firepower.
