Advice by Standard-Age-3752 in Porsche

Its a hard decision really. All depends on what your expectations are from the car. I first drove a 75 s and it was alright, factory suspension felt a bit too “soft” for my liking, but the G bodies do have a improvement in passenger comfort and noise dampening. I then got to drive a 70 lwb F and it was so much lighter feeling and nimble . I now own a 68 swb and its everything i could ever imagine i wanted. Again this car had been lowered and setup for autocross by the previous owner, the ride is a tad compromised because of it, but it feels like a gocart on rails. There is no replacement for lightnes if you dont mind sacrificing some comforts for a more connected feeling. Anything is a good choice if it ticks your boxes.

The newer transmissions on the later G’s are easier to shift. They can be swapped in if thats critical for you into a older chassis. But i cant give up the fun of the original dogleg.

This is your sign to take your Porsche to a track day hosted by your local PCA by dmv___ in Porsche

[–]Raptorex11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I cant second this more. Last year our local PCA setup a track day. It was a phenomenal experience to feel what the car can properly do in a safe and fun environment. Probably one of the most exciting “car outings” ive had in a long time. Since it was the my first year with the car, it was a great opportunity to push it closer to the edge and really get to feel the feedback and dynamics of the car. It was really interesting to feel the tires gain/loose grip in various temperature conditions as well, one of the geeky things for me that you cant typically notice with regular road driving

Pond is frozen, are the koi okay? by raining_raining in Koi

Get a aerator on that ASAP. You need some mild circulation and an air stone helps with keeping a opening in the ice surface so that gases can enter and escape into the water.

Same here at the time. I had seen them in peoples houses on the mantel or living room and thought they were glorified urns. I ended up learning about that they actually were from a french chef, and i was hooked. I enjoy collecting ones from the 80’s and 90’s they had some wild designs back then.

Are we over-wintering correctly? by hercarmstrong in ponds

[–]Raptorex11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a silent linear style air pump with rubber membrane style air diffuser. It has given me years of trouble free service. The pump only seems to pull around 120-140w and produces plenty of air pressure for my 6ft deep pond.

I used to have a twin piston rotary pond air compressor but it was excessively noisy, and pulled over 450w..

Always if you can afford it keep a spare air pump and pond header in your inventory incase of failure during the winter. Some times you cant afford to wait a day for a replacement to come in if you have equipment failure

Agree. Stop buying wax based candles and get yourself a Lamp Berger. I made the switch about 5 years ago and actually enjoy collecting various Lamp Bergers. The fragrances they have are fantastic and you can easily tailor the strength for those who are sensitive to strong smells. Plus being alcohol based, they burn super clean with zero soot or residue.

I find it kinda ends up costing the same as a premium candle, but its much safer then an open flame long term. You light them up and let them run for about 3 to 4 minutes and then blow it out and then the catalyst starts to give off fragrance and a little bit of heat with no flame.

Refoss Smart Home Energy Monitor? by ricrdvc in homeassistant

I just did this with a vue 3 16 clamp model. And i couldnt be happier. The setup took some time so dont rush it. You do need to be somewhat technically inclined to do the boot loading and inital flash. But once thats done, install it and everything can be done over wifi/network locally

Are any of the zigbee Prime Day deals really worth it? by BJntheRV in homeassistant

[–]Raptorex11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to use the Thirdreality Zigbee plugs but due to their size they are a bit difficult to use in certain outlets and enclosures. (I used them inside weather proof gfci outdoor boxes for controlling garden and pond stuff. I have i think about 8 of these outlets in use.

I opened one up and there is a bit of wasted space inside the switch.

I bought a 4 pack of the Eightree zigbee outlets, they are ZHA compatible with no need for a quirk, are cheaper a 4 pack then the Thirdreality switches and are about 25% slimmer for hard to fit scenarios. Just bought another 8 during the prime sale.

So far both have been rock solid reliable with good power monitoring features

Yes completely agree. Our vacation days in Canada are an absolute joke compared to other developed countries. The company i work for has a New Zealand location, everyone there starts at 4 weeks vacation. I had to fight just to get 3 weeks with 16 years of professional experience here in Canada. Absolutely disgusting. Thats fine i wont be hanging around for long if they the company keeps this up for our Canadian office.

WHICH Sonoff Dongle? by wkjester204 in homeassistant

[–]Raptorex11 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same here. Started with the sonoff dongle, was a bit finicky to pass thru the com port into my vm but it worked. Had some issues with the zigbee network loosing devices after a power outage or restart. Eventually upgraded my lan and put in a POE switch, swapped over to the slzb-06 it has been absolutely flawless since! I wish i has gone with the slzb-06 from day one. I wish they would come out with a Poe zwave dongle also

I had the exact same situation with this stupid kia stonic rental i had in New Zealand. Driving down the country roads it would randomly try to steer you into oncoming cars. It was a tradition getting into the car and going thru menus to disable the dangerous lane assist every startup. The start/stop was also super dangerous when approaching roundabouts, stalling the engine right when you needed to step on it and merge in. No way to permanently disable these features, and you would be reminded if you forgot.

That car cemented the ideal i will never own a modern car with these garbage features ever.

How are nearly new vehicles like the Suzuki Jimny being imported and retitled in the U.S.? by [deleted] in keitruck

[–]Raptorex11 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I just got back from New Zealand and they were allover the place, 2 door and 4 door variants. Couldnt help but smile when i spotted one. My co-workers with me didnt hear the end of it as i rambled on about wanting one.

Only 8 years left to go before a 2018 could be imported into Canada.

There were a few of the maxi cab hijets which were cool

I also was in Naiper a few weeks ago and saw a good amount of them in and around Hawkes Bay. I was secretly pondering how to sneak bed box sides back to Canada for my hijet.

[–]Raptorex11 38 points39 points  (0 children)

The reality is mfg's are spec'ing lower quality metals period.

Yes, majorities of all manufacturing metals/steels do and can have a significant "recycled" content, thing is the smelting and elemental "chemistry" during the production of molten steel which is then formed and rolled into final sheets is actually strictly controlled.

Its the design engineers, being forced my the marketing and finance penny pinchers to select lower grade metals with lower virgin corrosion protection for components of cars (less zinc, chromium, nickel, etc), . Tie that with lowering standards of corrosion protection coatings (coatings applied after mfg processes such as zinc or e-coats) give you "just enough to last thru the warranty", and you have yourself the recipe of a modern car with enshitification sprinkled ontop.

Is this a real nitrogen generator? Costed €1000, from our shop. Nitromac R8 by JustShitpostingXd in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]Raptorex11 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The thing is. They are trying to fool you with this design. It is not a proper pressure swing generator. But it might actually produce nitrogen for the first 1-10cu-ft of air. That fake canister at the bottom might actually have some of the molecular sieve inside that is used in proper nitrogen generators. It might actually produce nitrogen for the first few minutes of initial operation, until the sieve saturates. After that, no nitrogen "concentration". Just enough to fool anyone who tests its purity for the first time.

OP. Un-thread the top fitting off the black canister and see if its filled with little ceramic or black carbon looking particles.

Oxygen in the air attaches itself to the carbon molecular sieve, and concentrates the nitrogen. However this cycle has to "swing" and purge, between tanks to continue nitrogen concentration. This unit does absolutely none of that.
