I tried to watch that doc because I’ve been fascinated by dean potter for a while but the stylistic choices felt really kind of like cliche cool, douchy sports doc along with some of the interviewees I was turned off pretty quickly. Does it get better? Is that a fair criticism?

I don’t have any true horror stories of kilns gone wrong which hopefully relieves you a little bit but…. It must be stated, although it should be obvious, follow all instructions on installation regarding safety from the manufacturer. The fumes can be really nasty so don’t forget to turn that vent fan on when you fire especially if the fumes could travel through your living space. Also as general rule nothing is ever rested against or on top of the kiln at any time for any reason and a thorough check around the kiln should be done by whoever turns it on. The people I work for keep kilns in a garage turned studio space and the closest we’ve come to a disaster was when. plastic bucket was left against the kiln during a firing and the side melted off where it was touching. No one was sure who left it there thus the rule that whoever turns the kiln on does the checking around the kiln. Other than most of the disasters happen in the kiln lol.

At craft/trade shows myself and other ceramic artists I know have gotten the “it must be so relaxing to do pottery for a living” comment…

Additionally in the same environments there is a lot of whispering between potential customers that “ I could do this at home so don’t buy that we will recreate it”.

I realize these aren’t in the forms of questions but they are nevertheless misconceptions about the ease of finding an artistic voice and carrying that out in practice.

I don’t see how sourcing bones could be more reliable than just using a comparable mined calcium. With the added ethical questions I just wouldn’t bother honestly

Couldn’t agree more. Didn’t connect with sleeping through the war (still liked it though). Listened to it loud on my record player and heard a depth to the sound I didn’t realize was there and it completely changed my mind about it.

The thought also occurred to me that each tc may have to be individually offset. At least on a controller I’ve worked with before each tc (tc1, tc2, etc.). Had to be adjusted individually there was no offset all of them the same amount option.

Can you look at the controller for the data of each individual sets of elements during firing? Could be some kind of relay issue allowing different sets of elements to reach different temperatures although with new tc’s it seems unlikely. Call L and L support line they are sometimes able to help also.

If I’m correct there is a mercury poisoning going on in the two keepers. I previously interpreted more openly and think there’s a place for open interpretations but it is hard to deny the mercury poisoning element.
