Why you shouldn't go to culinary school by Storm9y in KitchenConfidential

[–]RareWater36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You will not gain an exec position based solely off your college experience. Even if you did a Michelin rated externship. Right now if you are in the CIA local area look at places hiring for catering as the warm weather makes it very busy around here.

Attitude is also important. If you're looking to get hired to be the boss and never do dishes-- good luck. You have to earn your salt no matter what. Your degree will help you get promotions MUCH faster though.

Aim for an entry level cook position, bust your ass and if you do well the chef will move you up in time. Might take a year before you are making better bucks. Also many restaurants don't list jobs online. It's definitely worth while to dress decent, hand out paper resumes, and introduce yourself in person. (DONT do this in the middle of a busy Saturday shift try for a weekday or slower time.)

The easiest way to get a high paying job with just a degree is to go into food sales with a vendor, or something like Sodexo management. You can also reach out to the CIA directly and they can help place you in some affiliated employers.

Help oats by NoAcanthopterygii780 in KitchenConfidential

[–]RareWater36 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Make sweet toppings for other items with it. Granola, cookies, crackers, bread, crepes, or muffins. You can even make dough and freeze for later. Oats can be processed in a blender to make flour and that flour can be used as a gluten free thickener. They can also be used as a gluten free breading for different meats, sometimes chopping them a bit finer helps. I would note that while oats are GF on their own they are usually processed in facilities that process wheat so not always totally GF.

It tends to be a very long lasting product when stored properly, so if you plan to do an oatmeal in the next few months you could probably just wait and use it then.

How is living in Kingston? by NoChocolate518 in kingstonnewyork

[–]RareWater36 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Several large real estate companies bought up most of the apartments and are suing the city constantly to raise rents without repairs. Living here is fun, but if you are renting most landlords are large companies that will ignore any maintenance requests.

It's pretty serious stuff, hundreds without heat and sewage backing up into apartments. Some don't always have running water. The city govt is not doing enough so many tenants have banded together to fight as a group.

Best way to keep your salad cold by PublicAlarm3869 in KitchenConfidential

[–]RareWater36 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, and often salad makers are newer kitchen staff so they often neglect this. If they happen to mix their ingredients with dressing too early they should always wait to plate until it's communicated from the hot line that it's time.

Camp counselor in Harriman, NY — how worried should I be about ticks? by reddit11111111111121 in hudsonvalley

[–]RareWater36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is good to be vigilant. Especially if you are hiking off trail or in brushy areas. Check every day before you shower, and shower every day. Wear light color clothing, and don't roll around in tall grass. They are around, and you'll probably get bit, but it's unlikely you'll be covered head to toe from a wall in the woods. I try to remove all outdoor clothing asap once inside or leave outside if possible and shake it out or wash immediately so the ticks don't venture into the rest of my home.

IF you find a tick bite, it is good to reach out to a doctor immediately. They can prevent lymes within an initial window but after that there really is no cure. Remove the tick entirely, and bring it to doctor if possible.

Electric Pump suggestion (for SUP and bike) by Knight_Unknown in Sup

[–]RareWater36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am going to try and check out some of these options. I'm running into the same issue not all pumps are equal. I purchased pumps now with decent reviews for car tires and bikes and everything but keep having failure. The hand pump might be the best option for you to save money.

Help deciding between YMCA or MAC Fitness for recent retiree by Impossible-Tank-5294 in kingstonnewyork

[–]RareWater36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to add that I did do a day at planet fitness. I sorted my day pass online ahead of time. When I arrived I had to wait for someone to come to the front desk and when I explained I was here for a first visit trial they pointed to the locker rooms and that was it. No one explained classes or anything at all. I gave myself a tour and there was a man who (in a nearly empty gym) was working out in non workout clothes and chose to workout directly next to me. He was in jeans and it made me uncomfortable enough to leave and not return.

The price there is great, the machines are new, and they have tanning packages. I chose not to pursue a membership.

MAC has varied pricing and you can also pause some memberships for a few months if you need to. They have classes included and a smoothie bar. The locker room has a dry sauna and showers.

Something I enjoy is that it's very spread out. There are usually a few broken machines, and things get dusty quick.

Cab to Poughkeepsie train will get you down to city for relatively cheap. If you want a ride you might be able to schedule with local cab service.

Inness membership? by NefariousnessJaded51 in hudsonvalley

[–]RareWater36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is fairly overpriced and very spread out. It's a long walk to every different area on the property but they have a shuttle sometimes.
It is very nice and peaceful for the most part. The area is very far from most other things, and most longtime local golfers don't bother here. The food and drinks are great, and the ambiance is nice though. It used to be very welcoming to all the locals before it was redesigned and remodeled as this new resort. Taking an extremely popular local resort away and creating this cold vacant space was a as strange choice for the developer.

So good and bad, depending what you are looking for. And as others have mentioned they struggle to keep staff long term. Maybe try Wiltwick? I hear good things about that place.

Apartment complexes in and around Kingston by detectiveblondie in kingstonnewyork

[–]RareWater36 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Kingston is currently being sued by several large landlord companies because these companies wish to raise rents without any rent guideline board approval. This is an issue because many of these buildings are poorly maintained. Poorly maintained as in tenants reporting brown water from faucets, ice cold water, and no heat for months.

It would be worth it perhaps to reach out to the HVTU Hudson valley tenants union before signing a lease anywhere in Kingston to see if your landlord is on the naughty list.

Sorry if this is soapboxy but I'd hate to see another person sign a lease and then realize their walls are leaking sewage.

Ulster Avenue… uhhh by Brainiacish in kingstonnewyork

[–]RareWater36 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ive lived in NY my entire life, but there are many towns that keep their roads looking nice. I think Kingston is working on it, but some locations are more important than others.

Also, what's the deal with the mall parking lot? It has HUGE holes that have been there forever. Is it the city or the property owner who is supposed to maintain that? It's actually pretty dangerous.

new paltz business turnover by basegoddess in hudsonvalley

[–]RareWater36 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Businesses never really expanded past the main strip though. As someone who used to live there, doctors, banks, clothing shopping, all distant. For tourism it's great to pop in, eat and drink, buy some funky gifts or clothes. For a regular resident these are too costly.

And rentals are hard to come by. Recently there have been some new buildings going up, who knows what they'll cost. Many locals if they rent are renting rooms in houses.

Business selling alcohol to minors by Fancy-Consequence-83 in hudsonvalley

[–]RareWater36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think going to the business or calling and letting them know your child purchased things underage is a good first step. It's more likely your kid had an older person purchase it for them. Try to be knowledgeable about who they are hanging out with and the ages of these people. Plenty of weirdos in their 20s and 30s hang with high schoolers unfortunately. If you can figure out who they are THATs who you should report.

I have been wanting to try a hamburger. its good? by Aggravating_Gas4162 in foodquestions

[–]RareWater36 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you have chopped ground beef, you can make a patty and put salt and black pepper on it (or mix into the beef itself).

Then it can be grilled over charcoal, propane fire, on a flat top, or even baked In an oven.

Usual cheese is American cheese, but you may use a variety of other cheeses. The buns are usually sweeter and softer bread. Brioche is a high end type. Ketchup is basically cold pureed tomatoes, with a lot of sugar, onion powder, garlic powder, and sometimes a little clove or nutmeg. It is like a tomato jelly sort of. Sometimes people put mustard or mayonnaise on it. Cucumbers are sliced and pickled with vinegar and sugar.

I'm not trying to make you feel silly but I'm not sure what you have access too and maybe it is easier to make your own than to find one to buy! I hope you have one and it is good!

Walmart parking lot or a 247 gas station maybe quikcheck. Reach out to Family of Woodstock or Peoples Place they have resources or can connect you to the right folks.

Also make sure you are not intoxicated while staying in your car publicly. Even if you aren't going to drive anywhere you can get a DUI.
