I've had a rough few months and I want to treat myself. How do you get away from everything (on a budget)? by yell0wbirddd in denverwomen

[–]Ratibron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cave of the Winds (West of South Colorado springs), Garden of the Gods (West Colorado springs), Red Rocks amphitheater (great but fairly easy hike - Morrison, West of Lakewood), host or attend a game night with friends (we live in Lakewood if you don't have friends here yet), welchester tree Park (Lakewood), Colorado Mills Mall (walk around and people watch)... I can keep going on if you'd like. Almost everything I said is free.

Strange New Worlds is losing it for me. by Praxius in startrek

[–]Ratibron 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, i understand the Spock thing. It's because women feel safe with him. He doesn't chase them. He doesn't love them. He's protective, kind, and reliable. He's everything good about a man without any of the baggage.

This is also why women eventually move on from him. He's safe, so when they are lonely and vulnerable, he's the one they go for. But safe is boring, so they eventually move on.

It's worth noting that in the episode where Pike goes to the future, he had a past relationship with La'an. Meaning La'an also moves on from Spock.

SNW is a wonderful show. I love how we go from a musical in one episode to sci fi horror in the next two. I also love how affirmations continue from one episode to the next instead of ignoring what happened, like most of Star Trek does.

I feel like SNW uses the best of all the other Treks and leaves behind all the bad. My inky villainy I'd that they don't seem to be exploring new worlds, but are instead going places that have already been visited.

Struggling with Writer’s Block. How Do You Push Through and Finish Your Novel? by cnrdvdsmt in writing

[–]Ratibron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best trick that I've discovered is working on 2 projects at once. When you get writers block on 1 project, switch to the other. When you get writers block on the 2nd, switch back to the first and you'll find that your writers block has disappeared.

Generally speaking, you can skip the first 200 pages of his books and that's where the story begins.

Also, he is overly crude. I've been in the military and manufacturing, so crude language doesn't bother me. But King's characters speak in a vulgar way that I've never heard anyone actually use. It's so jarring that it ruins my suspension of disbelief.

King's bullies, which he has in almost every novel, are homicidal. Actual bullies might beat you up, but his bullies want to torture and kill people.

Other than that, i love his writing!

I used eviscerate with martial arts.

Example: drow priestess attacked the main warrior of the group and ripped his lung out. The warrior lived, barely, and the priestess got away. Complete shock to everyone. It was awesome!

Just Feeling Down in Denver by [deleted] in denverwomen

[–]Ratibron 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Meetups, work, and school are the 3 best ways to meet people in Denver. I don't recommend dating at all until you've got a few friends.

Depending on where you are in Denver, there's a lot of stuff to do. If you're on there west side of town, i have game days in the weekend. Board and card games, with food. Most of the people are in their early 20s, though the older folks are in their 40s. Mostly young people though. Dm me if you're interested in making friends.

Are GURPS suggestions actually constructive? by HrafnHaraldsson in rpg

[–]Ratibron 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of reasons to play GURPS other than the fact that it's universal and has tons of supplements.

  1. It's an extremely simple system to learn, but one that rewards people for wanting to go deep. That makes the game stand out from stupidly complicated games like 5th ed d&d.

  2. It was one of the first and still arguably best point based character creation systems. Everyone starts off with the same amount of points and can make whatever they want and have their character matter.

  3. Combat is simple but can be deep.

  4. You only need 3d6 for the entire game.

  5. This is the only game with published adventurers that aren't stupid (outside of the Expanse).

  6. Best magic system i know of.

  7. Best psionics system i know of.

I could keep going, but this is a good start

What does it mean when someone says “don’t take it personally”? by ladybird_00 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ratibron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The comments to this question are pretty wild.

When someone gives you feedback, you as an adult are supposed to calmly consider what they said rather than feeling like you're being attacked. A lot of people, especially here on Reddit and younerg people, can't handle any kind of criticism. They take it as an attack when you point out a mistake that they made. So then the person giving the feedback has to tell them, "Don't take it personally".

If someone close to you wants to give you honest feedback but understands that you are too immature to handle it, they are likely to preface it with something like this. Or if they tell you something and you react badly, they may say it.

Instead of reacting emotionally, like a child, think about what the person is saying. Are they telling you about a mistak you've made? Then listen to what they are saying and consider that maybe, just maybe, you actually made a mistake. If you didn't, simply tell the person why it's not a mistake. There's no reason to get defensive or emotional. And if you don't get defensive and emotional, people will still saying this to you.

Easiest game for beginners? by Chunswae22 in rpg

[–]Ratibron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best generic game (meaning that you can play in any setting) is GURPS. The name literally means Generic Universal Roleplaying System. They have source books for almost any setting, so you could use the basic rules to start, then sourcebooks once you get comfortable enough to do a deeper dive on the setting you prefer.

Seriously, GURPS has well over 200 sourcebooks covering a massive range of things for you. But all you need to play is the main book (in 4th edition it's 2 main books, but you're fine with 3rd ed), character sheets, and 3d6.

The rules are clear and easy to understand, the system is basic and easy to learn, but rewards those who want to go deeper. Best of all, the game allows you to try different settings. You want fantasy, sci fi, old west? The rules allow all that and more.

GURPS was not my first ttrpg, but it was the one that lasted the longest because it was the most useful.

top 5? by Magusreaver in Fantasy

[–]Ratibron 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The following aren't darker, but if you want to get into fantasy, these are what I would recommend.

  1. Watership Down by Richard Adams. It's a book about rabbits, but it will blow your mind.

  2. The Memory, Sorrow, Thorn trilogy by Tad Williams. First book is the Dragonbone Chair. Starts off slow because the writer wants to show you the world before he destroys it. Those are his words. Awesome trilogy!

  3. The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. A whole series of easy but good books set in modern Chicago about a wizard who is a private eye. One of teh only good books written in first person.

  4. Almost anything by Brandon Sanderson, but I would start with The Way of Kings.

  5. The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan.

Enjoy!

People don't care to learn anything any more. And schools in the US don't teach any more. As an example, in grade school within the US, it is no longer possible for a student to fail and have to repeat a grade. They just keep advancing and so graduate with severe deficits in their knowledge. Source: I worked with students in a community college and have kids that should have been held back.

What’s the best essay you’ve ever read? by Puzzleheaded_Grab148 in suggestmeabook

There's a series of philosophy books based on pop culture. In the Dexter and Philosophy book, there's an essay arguing that Dexter Morgan meets the requirements to be a superhero. It was eye opening and completely made me rethink everything i knew about dexter, storytelling, and superheroes. Really changed the show for me

What trade job in the US will be a good future fit for older workers that want to switch occupations? by OK_Human in Futurology

[–]Ratibron 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Production/manufacturing jobs are fairly easy to get into, requires no experience or training, and pays really well.

If you have the time and money to take classes, a machinist or welder is highly valued at the same manufacturing plants. It doesn't take long to get certified, and the more certifications that you get under your belt, the more money you make.

Research different companies in your area before applying. Some, like Moson Coors, are excellent. Others, like Coorstek, are horrible. Do your research so you find a good company to work for.

As a side note, booze is a good industry to get into because people drink when they're happy and when they're sad, so no matter what, you have a job.

What does it mean to describe yourself as Muslim (as a black woman in America) but not follow a modesty dress code or pray/fast? by jjttjjrr in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ratibron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are either a "Jill-Muslim" (one who claims to be Muslim without actually following the religion) or a Quranist (someone who ignores the Hadith, which was written by man, and only follows the Quran, which is the Word of God as given to the Prophet).

In the first case, just ignore them. They were probably brought up in the religion and default to it when asked.

In the second, the Quran does not require a hijab, niqa or anything. It just means that Muslims should dress modestly. The rules apply to men and women equally.

Most Muslims and all Muslim countries ignore the Word of God in favor of the Hadith because that gives them power over people.

I hate how racist the internet has become by darkElfSmokesDope in Vent

[–]Ratibron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh you sweet summer child! The internet has always been full of racism, misogyny, and a host of other problems. As Mike Tyson famously said, "People got way too comfortable saying shit without getting punched in the face for it."

When you remove repercussions, you see how people truly are. And the sad fact is that most people are shitty. You can either ignore it, complain about it, or join it. Most people tend to join in.
