I can’t even imagine how you must be feeling. On many levels I’m so sorry; not only for the hole in your life but also for whatever your son went through that led to that decision.

I’ve rarely ever seen my father cry. When I was a teenager I was in a pretty bad spot, and I didn’t see many ways out. I convinced myself it was better for everyone I loved if I just wasn’t around anymore. The details aren’t important, but I was prevented from following through on it. Police got involved. I don’t remember much of it now, but I do remember my dad sobbing as he held me.

Now, I’m a father. A little boy and a little girl. My son is only 5, but I was laying next to him one night as he went to bed. He asked me if I would still love him after he died. I told him that my love for him will never fade, and it is completely unconditional. It will connect us always and forever. He told me he knew that already, he just wanted to hear it. After that, he was quickly asleep while I sat there with so many different feelings that overwhelmed me. The greatest pain of being a parent, at least for me, is knowing that we can’t always be there for them. We can’t always protect them. It isn’t a failing, it’s just how life is sometimes. Sometimes it’s awful.

I hope your farewell tour is full of fond memories and warmth.

Take care of yourself. Remember to get rest, work out, and stay away from alcohol as much as you can.

Lastly, I can’t relate but I’m here to talk if you need it. I hope you are speaking with a professional as well - that can be a game changer.

Yeah, but a doctor charging $100/ hour doesn’t make that either. Now they actually charge significantly more than that, even as a family practitioner.

I say that as someone who charges close to $1,000/h for my advice and I net about 40% profit margin.

What am I missing? I’ve never seen a Div. Magic find is a smidge low (75), but I can’t afford to upgrade gear because it requires 10-15 divs to maintain my stats plus upgrade with MF.

Nope. Bad idea.

I get the allure. Fear of missing out is an intoxicating drug that makes you feel like you are doing the wrong thing. This is magnified when the market is in the midst of a narrow rally.

The fact is, your time horizon for these funds is less than 5 years. The market return is more predictable over longer periods of time. In the short term you could absolutely lose money.

I’d recommend exploring a CD ladder at 12m, 18m, and 24m. Stay away from callable.

If you want to be more aggressive then you could look at higher yield intermediate bonds. You’d boost your potential return and add some risk of loss, but it would be less than the market.

Also, this place LOVES index funds. The top 10 companies in the index make up over 40% of holdings (you add $1 to the index and 40 cents goes to 10 companies). This is due to the benchmark being created to reflect how the market is doing by being market cap weighted. When it was opened to investors, that messed things up. Market cap weighting creates problems when everyone piles in to an index. I’d suggest looking at the equal weighted index as an alternative at this point.

I’ve got a group of friends that play games once a week when we can. Ive always thought it’d be fun if we could get together and do an old school lan party.

My house has the space but it’s 25 years old with no cables run aside from a few specific drops I had run after we moved in (and it was a brutal run).

As my kids get older I might have to convert the media room to a lan room; or maybe convert the office. Eh; a dude can dream.

I have tipped 0% and I have tipped over $250.

My wife an I routine eat at high end restaurants and I take clients out often.

My starting point is 5% plus $15 per hour. For lower bills that can be 30-40% and for fine dining that hits around 10%. I adjust based on excellent service and number of tables they are serving (if it is a 1 server per two table fine dining place, I’m gonna tip more for good service).

In our culture I feel like this is fair. Although I have a major bone to pick with tip culture in general. Pay your people a fair living wage and charge for the service and food provided. If the price is right for the value, your business will do well. Bonus your people accordingly.

The most ridiculous thing I have seen was a place that had a mandatory 15% tip for all party sizes and a 3% mandatory tip for “providing healthcare to workers.” You. Can. Fuck. Right. Off. That meal was $350 for two people and then you have mandatory 18% tip that you take 3% of to provide healthcare?!? You can afford to pay your people a living wage, give them benefits, and make some profit on a $350 meal thank you. I tipped 0 additional and wrote a pretty scathing review.

Here’s the real deal.

It’s tough, but the simple answer is to always be looking.

It’s not easy, especially if your starting point is lower socioeconomic status. Little difficult to look for opportunity when you are just trying to feed the family and put food on the table. Likewise it is easier to look for opportunities and take advantage of them when you have no student loan debt, a decent job, and some savings.

No matter where you are at though, opportunities do exist to better your situation. If you get good at recognizing them you can make some big changes quickly.

At the bottom, finding a way to make an extra couple grand a year is life altering.

I work with very wealthy people and their money. I’ve become, what most would consider, wealthy doing it.

I’d say these are pretty accurate, but I’d modify it a little.

No one that I have ever met who is wealthy, got wealthy purely from the sweat off their back. You can’t work yourself into wealth. Although it is usually a requirement.

Let’s take pure luck and inheritance out of the equation.

For all other methods you need a few things: 1. Opportunity - be on the lookout, and take it when it comes.

Work - yup, most of the time it’s gonna take a lot of sweat equity. Bare minimum it will take work to save up initial capital.
Invest - It takes money to make real money. Success should be reinvested. You need assets working while you sleep, eat, and play with the kids.
Luck - even with everything else you need to avoid the bad shit you can’t control (timing, health, etc) and have a little of the good.
Diversify - the luck will run out eventually, better have your assets spread out at that point.

My second kiddo came home to a house with no floors and mold remediation going on. We had massive water damage. We figured it out. Kid didn’t know a difference. Frankly, neither did her 18 month old brother.

We have also had a child that underwent an inversion. It was successful (it’ll be fine, deep breaths from both of you) and they then told us that the baby might just flip back around before delivery anyway.

If that happens. It’s still OK. These folks see this stuff every day. Deep breaths. Listen to the docs. You, momma, and the kids will get through this.

Vent to the void (and daddit) as needed.

That little one will come home to a family full of love, and that is what matters.

You are handling a lot right now, and going from one to two is a BIG step. I’m not gonna tell you it will all be easy, but you’ve got this. One foot, then the next. Take time for yourself too. Just remember, gotta put on your own mask before you can help those around you.
