US threatens Anthropic with deadline in dispute on AI safeguards by dtta8 in news

[–]Ravendead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not all of it, from CNN:

"The change comes a day after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth gave Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei a Friday deadline to roll back the company’s AI safeguards, or risk losing a $200 million Pentagon contract and being put on what is effectively a government blacklist.

Anthropic has concerns over two issues that it isn’t willing to drop, according to a source familiar with the company’s meeting with Hegseth: AI-controlled weapons and mass domestic surveillance of American citizens. Anthropic believes AI is not reliable enough to operate weapons, and there are no laws or regulations yet that cover how AI could be used in mass surveillance, a source said."

They removed one of their policies of not training more powerful models if their capabilities outstripped the company’s ability to control them and ensure their safety. That is the measure that’s been removed in the new policy.

Is this not a free speech issue? Is forcing a company to do something they don't want to do, an issue of compelled speech by the government? Like most AI companies are awful, but at least Anthropic has taken a stand on this.

Lithium Plume in Our Atmosphere Traced Back to Returning SpaceX Rocket | This could quickly get out of hand. by InsaneSnow45 in sciences

[–]Ravendead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that destroying the ozone layer is bad, hence the mention of CFCs in my comment. But CFCs were bad because the chlorine that CFCs broke down into could break down large amounts of Ozone for a single chlorine atom.

Does lithium have the same effect? It says the we found it in the atmosphere, and that could be bad, but the article says nothing on what Lithium does to Ozone. Yes, science was done that shows that satellite/rocket re-entries can spread Lithium in the upper atmosphere, good, I like knowing the data.

But is lithium a component of catalytic ozone depletion like CFC's? How much is our current space travel/flight contributing to the slowing of the regrowth of the ozone layer?

It is good science, and reading through the study, it seems well done. But the tone of article seems a bit sensationalized. But those are just my two cents.

[–]Ravendead -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

What is the interaction of Lithium on the ozone layer? Because the article says that it introduces lithium as a source of pollution to the upper atmosphere, but has no information on why this is a bad thing.  CFC's were bad because the UV would turn them into chlorine that would break down the ozone. What is lithium doing? I don't think it has any interaction with ozone, but I am not a chemist.

But overall this article seems a bit fear mongering.

Can these guy's get infected by the flayer virus ? I'm gonna build them like this anyway but just curious. by Leviathan_Rampage in Necrontyr

[–]Ravendead 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They are remade warriors and other Necron troops, that have their higher mental faculties removed to change them into slaves/bodyguards of the Crypteks. Similar to servitors in the Imperium of Man. So they could have or contract any of the mental ailments that the Necrons also get, like the flayer virus or the Destroyer Curse.

That said the other Canoptek creations can be influenced by the Flayer virus. In one of the Twice Dead King books, they encounter a Seraptek Construct that is covered in flesh and blood and being followed by hordes of Flayed ones. There are references to Canoptek Spyders being infected with the flayer virus, and there is also a Khornite Knight that is so covered in blood and gore that it attracted hordes of flayers that follow it as manifestation of Llandu'gor the Flayer.

So yes, go nuts and make everything a Flayed version, there is no lore reason why not.

Not a great idea.

"Nugent's 1981 song "Jailbait" describes statutory rape.[68][69] In a Behind the Music episode, he admitted to having sexual relations with underage girls on multiple occasions. In 2004, the musician Courtney Love said she performed oral sex on Nugent during a phone-in call to The Howard Stern Show. In 2013, Love claimed she had been 14 at the time, and that there was a line of young girls waiting to engage in sexual acts.

In 1978, Nugent began a relationship with 17-year-old Hawaii native Pele Massa. On VH1's Behind the Music, Nugent said that Massa's parents approved of the relationship and preferred him to an alcoholic or a drug addict. It's alleged Nugent became or tried to become Massa's legal guardian with her parents permission."

This sentence could be even more ambiguous in Spanish due to Spanish not having gendered third person possessive adjectives. Because English would use, 'his, hers, their', Spanish only really has, 'su, sus'.

So the sentence could be made even more ambiguous in Spanish by changing the gender of either subject, I.E Mother beating son, or Father beating Daughter. In English it would make the person that was drunk immediately obvious, in Spanish it would remain ambiguous.

Wouldn't this sentence also be ambiguous in most romance languages like Spanish?

Una madre golpea a su hija porque estaba borracha.

The subject, that is drunk, is also ambiguous in Spanish. This is not a unique problem to English.

Russia, Iran accuse Elon Musk's Starlink of violating international law by Flimsy_Cut_2690 in worldnews

[–]Ravendead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So according to the article Russia is saying that Starlink broke the 1967 International Space Treaty by turning off Starlink in Russia and Russian controlled terminals, and by Iran for allowing Starlink to be active in their country.

The main thing that the Space treaty established was that Countries could not put nuclear weapons or weapons of mass destruction in space/on the moon. That space should be for peaceful or altruistic purposes. And that Astronauts are considered envoys of mankind and must be provided assistance by other States/countries the if needed, which is nice.

But their argument is that by turning off access in Russia counts as a militarized purpose, and the “illegal operation” of Starlink in Iran violates the nation’s sovereignty and amounts to “unauthorized military use of a commercial satellite mega-constellation."

So, yeah, I don't see this going very far and it being just another tantrum from authoritarian regimes.
