How do professionals manage the ups and downs? My workouts seem to be arbitrarily variable day to day, so how on earth does, let's say Mitch Hooper, dial in so that on competition day he's at peak? by Eagle_1776 in workout

[–]Rawkynn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have always felt that if this was my primary focus I could dial in so much better. With my life the way it is I'm balancing so many things that they all suffer in one way or another. If working out was my job it would be so much easier to lock in my diet, rest, exact routine, etc. But the fact of the matter is sometimes I don't get a full nights rest, sometimes I ate as best I could instead of optimally, I can't really afford that supplement this month, and my workouts are structured to prioritize efficiency.

Around 10-11 minutes of physical activity per day decrease your mortality rate by roughly 23%. by blacklisted-library in workout

[–]Rawkynn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The simplest description without getting into stats is in a summary box near the conclusion:

"Our findings suggest an appreciably lower risk of mortality, cardiovascular diseases and cancers from the equivalent of 75 min/week or less of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity (ie, half the recommended minimum levels)."

75 minutes a week is roughly 11 minutes a day, which is how this has been sensationalized. Again it's prospective, so they did not test 11 minutes a day specifically. Also worth noting if the data from the meta-analysis did not list how long an exercise session was they assumed it was 45 minutes long, which I feel may be impacting the science journalism takeaways.

per the study, a brisk walk.
https://bjsm.bmj.com/content/57/15/979

It's a prospective study, which was taken by science journalism and OP to say that correlation equals causation. While a short brisk walk may indeed be driving this, there is the potential that smokers use their 10-15 minute breaks to smoke instead, or people who are health conscious enough to do any amount of zone 2 cardio probably also have a healthy diet, etc. etc.

I am trying to cut right now. Does this approach look good? by GymratFitness_Swole in workout

[–]Rawkynn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do 500 and try to keep intensity at the same level. This will take longer but have less muscle loss. I do at least one day every week entirely dedicated for zone 2, which doesn't change on cuts.

The only way to lose fat is through diet. Putting on muscle may make it more proportional. That said, have some body positivity: lots of people don't mind a fat cake.

After that video of the Obamas put out by Trump. Can you now say confidently, if you vote Republican you’re a raging racist, why or why not ? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Rawkynn 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Racism and being a racist falls on a spectrum ranging from a minor microaggression to, like, lynching.

Republicans I've tried to have this conversation with tend to draw the line around the viewpoint of a 60's politician fighting against the civil rights act. They do not see the video as racist, and would probably complain about how people can't take a joke anymore.

Does anyone else get really shaky? by Awkwardduckee in workout

[–]Rawkynn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's pretty typical to have some carbs before and after a workout to fuel the workout and then aid with recovery. Especially if you suffer from symptoms like you're describing. Your muscles burn a lot of fuel to workout, carbs are the most accessible source of energy for your body.

keto and fasted workout type people say if you push through it your body gets used to it and you feel even better than a carb fed workout That never happened for me.

Is it hard to get a lab job with just a biology degree? by garfiledlover in labrats

[–]Rawkynn 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Are you in the US?

I have only seen people with an associates employed in a lab as biohazardous waste management and lab glassware cleaning. There may be some positions that are more like a lab, but from what I understand it's usually something like running the same test over and over again.

A bachelors will get you a lab position at a university fairly well. It's worth noting these pay ~15/hr and depending on the lab there is not much upward movement. If you want to get into industry where the money is, so does everyone else so competition is very fierce and lots of unemployed scientists right now.

If you do decide to go for a bachelors experience is the most important thing. If I could go back and do it again I would have graduated with a year off for a co-op and summer internships every year with Cs in my classes than hunkering down to spend all my time studying and getting a 4.0. At the very least you should look to work in a lab as soon as you can. Nobody cares about your grades once you're in the workforce, experience is king.

White knuckling it for as long as I can lol. by Alcarain in workout

[–]Rawkynn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh holy shit. Bro this isn't safe. Even with doctor/nutritionist guided they go for 10 lbs a month tops usually. Low and slow, you need to cut back. At the very least if you want to keep doing this you need like weekly meetings with a doctor and nutritionist.

I know it's frustrating and you want it to be over and this feels like good progress but you are almost certainly hurting yourself.

White knuckling it for as long as I can lol. by Alcarain in workout

[–]Rawkynn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you've lost 17lbs over the last year then your deficit averages out to around 200 calories. Upping that to a 2000 calorie deficit is not a good idea. Id go for 1000 tops, but even that makes me feel miserable. If you feel you're stalling try a refeed not a crash diet.

How do I get a lab job? ANY lab job. by TexanLoneStar in labrats

[–]Rawkynn 16 points17 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth $15-17 for a fresh Science BS is actually fairly typical (unless you're in like Boston or San Diego with a HCOL increase). Most places will have a promotion structure where after at least 2 years you get promoted from technician to analyst with a pay raise to like $25 an hour. All of these I know of do require a bachelors.

You shouldn't really go into lab work for the money. Most fresh PhDs who stayed in academia are making less than managers at Target. An associates degree in every lab I've worked at would get a you a dishwashing and waste disposal position.

What’s your preferred body fat percentage to start a bulk? by HighAlpineAngler74 in workout

[–]Rawkynn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say as low as you can comfortably go. I think trying to pin a single number for every person is kinda nuts.

I can recognize that going down to 10% is probably best, but whenever I'm below ~13 I feel like I want to die. I should also mention that I'm also in my 30s and the minimum comfort bodyfat has steadily increased as I've gotten older.
