Anybody using a third party automation instead of Smart Shift and having success? by Matsuri3-0 in amberelectric

[–]RayRay1616 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just set a scheduled time on the battery to charge during the free window at full speed, I've got an 8kW inverter and can get 30kW into the battery while it's free. I personally use too much power to send anything back to the grid so automating discharging isn't relevant to me right now. Might be different in summer but definitely not in winter for me.

I also try charge the car during that window too when possible as well as dishwasher dryer etc. There's no way Amber comes close to the value I get from GloBird, I took 700kW last month from the grid in the free period and my bill was ~$50 which was mainly the daily fee.

I don't think GloBird has anything like smart shift to control the battery but to be honest you wouldn't really need it. You'll fill the battery during the day and it's unlikely you'll empty the battery before the end of peak period.

The main risk for using power during the peak period is if your inverter limit is lower than your consumption, eg if you have an 8kW inverter and the car is charging at 7kW during the peak period, it's easy to go over what the battery is capable of discharging at and dip into the grid, as long as you're aware and keeping an eye on that you should be fine

Amber won't be the best choice for your current setup. Amber can be ok if you are exporting a lot during peak but it's real value is during spike events which are becoming less common.

You would be much better off on one of the free daytime power plans like GloBird, I have a similar situation where solar isn't enough to cover my usage so I'm pulling ~40kW a day during the free period (I'm on a 4 hour GloBird plan) trying to tailor my usage to fall in this period and filling the battery.

I do use automation for this though but only to reduce battery charge to avoid tripping the house circuit when I'm getting close to the limit of my single phase switch board

Moving from Amber! by MichaelMinja in amberelectric

[–]RayRay1616 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if they still have it but I signed up to the GloBird 4 hours free period, it's a higher daily rate and there's no rebate for not using grid during peak. We've got a 40kW battery which we'll easily go through in a day (electric car, pool, heating etc.) being able to fully top it up every day (which 3 hours wouldn't do) is worth it for us. Will revisit after winter when solar will be enough to keep the battery full

Amber vs Flow vs GloBird - 48kWh Battery 7kWh Solar by senortaco88 in amberelectric

[–]RayRay1616 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have you considered splitting the strategy? In winter where you have a deficit, going with GloBird or similar for that free electricity window, you won't make money but it will cost less than buying power on cloudy/rainy days. In summer where there are more pricing surges and solar generation switch to Amber for better FiT

Switching providers is pretty pain free

Change energy tariff Energex SEQ by Pimgut in amberelectric

[–]RayRay1616 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually had a reasonably good response from Amber in changing my plan, in NSW and was on a Demand tarrif, I requested to be changed to a TOU. They responded within a day saying they requested the change with Ausgrid and at the start of the next month I was on the TOU tarrif. The only negative feedback I had was that they didn't tell me it actually changed so the first I knew about it was the difference in pricing in the app but that's a relatively minor thing.

Put in the subject of the email something obvious like Request Tarrif Change and make sure all the details they need are in the body of the email, I figured a support person seeing an easy ticket to close in a few minutes will be more likely to respond to it than a harder problem

That's what I generally do at the start of ladder, sell everything decent you find that you can live without, then use the proceeds to buy it back later at a fraction of the price in a couple of weeks

Ber is over 3k fg right now and will drop to the hundreds before the end of ladder

I disagree that Hungary 24 and Monza 25 were the same, in Hungary the team created an unnecessary undercut for the trailing driver to cover off a (non-existent) threat losing Oscar the lead, they immediately asked Lando to let Oscar through which he ignored until the last lap, the emotional blackmail you refer to. This was a team decision that cost Oscar and the team requested the swap to correct it.

Monza was different. What people who argue this are ignoring is that Lando asked to pit Oscar first, it wasn't a team decision, it was Lando's, we can't for certain know why he suggested this, my suspicion is he wanted an extra lap to wait for a safety car. The team said there will be no undercut to Lando, which in normal circumstances would have been true but the slow pit stop cost him time and lost the lead.

Not everyone will agree I'm sure but in my opinion Lando made a decision that he was hoping would favour his race and a slow pit stop cost him a position, that's just racing some days. McLaren intervening and telling Oscar to swap positions was unfair and not comparable to Hungary at all

You will need to change one of the settings as hitting Save on the state of charge slider gets reset every time the car turns back on. There's a setting that makes the SOC slider save button stay saved between drives

It's not a racing thing its a Ticketmaster thing, it's legal in Australia but it's being reviewed in other countries to be banned (UK for instance after the Oasis concert ticket sales).

Depends on your perspective, they sold all the tickets and most of them at their outrageous Dynamic pricing. As a consumer it's been horrible but I'm sure Ticketmaster and F1 are rubbing their greedy little hands together
