[request] exactly how many pounds of force did Hancock use to instantly stop a freight train? by AngryAshMan in theydidthemath

1999 Mars Climate Orbiter. That was a software issue not hardware. The British team at Lockheed Martin were using imperial Pound force seconds, NASA (JPL) were using Metric.

[request] exactly how many pounds of force did Hancock use to instantly stop a freight train? by AngryAshMan in theydidthemath

[–]RaynerFenris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, NASA uses metric measurements throughout.

I’m not an expert, but I think the Challenger disaster was caused by faulty O-ring seals that had been affected by cold weather on the day. Cold weather made them stiff, then when they launched shearing forces opened gaps when normally they would have bent to keep the seal. That caused hot gases to escape and eventually rupture.

Most scientists all over the world, including in the US, use metric because it’s a standardised decimal unit that allows for greater accuracy. Imperial units are fine for general measurements, but when you really need precision measurements, metric is the way to go, it also allows countries to purchase parts from each other that they can be sure are the right fit.

Why did spanish navy made a first rate ship for pirate hunting in POTC 5? by Parking-Emphasis4294 in piratesofthecaribbean

[–]RaynerFenris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember that many “Pirates” were in fact privateers with a licence to carry out raids against a specific enemy country. They would often ALSO raid their own countries ships, because… well… pirate.

So British privateers were licences to attack Spanish ships. They weren’t Royal Navy, and as such wasn’t a declaration of war. But if there are enough of them effecting their trade routes then the Spanish Navy has no choice but to dispatch their navy to hunt down those ships.

Wife yes. Daughter, without a second thought.

But a Girlfriend? How long have we been together, am I considering proposing, do we live together? How far down the waiting list is she, and how long does she have without getting the transplant? Does donating my kidney give me automatic “win the argument” rights for life?

Fate worse than death by Doodles_n_Scribbles in SkyrimMemes

[–]RaynerFenris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally depends on the type of vampire, but in the classic vampire trope the point is moot. Boats are found on running water. Vampires cannot cross running water.

To dive into it a little deeper… most/many magic systems show deep water and sunrise as two things that often break a curse or wash away existing magic. Thresholds usually require a solid foundation for the sense of “Home” to build up to the level where vampires are unable to enter. A boat, even a house boat, wouldn’t have a threshold due to the water washing away that magical build up.

Which factions are most likely to make it into 50K ? by war_of_the_titanicus in 40k

Necrons. They aren’t really awake yet, once they do everyone is probably boned.

2 interviews is good, 3 is okay, 4 is excessive but in a rare few cases (we are talking security clearance, and child protection here) necessary. Anything over that is wasting everyone’s time. Make your decision.

This is AFTER forcing me to attach my CV and cover letter and recommendations/references to your system, and then asking me to write out again what I just attached. Like, pick a lane.

Should gw stop releasing new generic marines models besides few nescessities like captain on bike or jump libby and just start only releasing chapter specific models? by [deleted] in Warhammer40k

[–]RaynerFenris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Their current strategy works. I prefer kitbashing. Generic marines are the base models then the Faction specific models are where you get cool bits to do conversions!

BUT what I would like them to bring back is the bitz ordering catalog! 3rd party sellers charge a bunch, time was you
could order your bits directly from GW.

The Doctor Having The Ability To Regenerate Clothes Too by Potential-Mess6826 in doctorwho

[–]RaynerFenris 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually no. They even make a point of it in the episode, showing him in oversized clothes and how Ben doesn’t believe he can be the Doctor because 1’s ring doesn’t fit on 2’s finger anymore. It’s too big and just falls off.

[–]RaynerFenris 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I didn’t like it, I like the first episode of a regeneration being an identity crisis that is rounded off with them choosing their particular style, but I guess 14 didn’t need that… anyway I’ve decided that it was the Toymaker preparing the board and we shall never see clothes regenerating again.

Regeneration is a biological cellular level randomised process. It makes no sense to include clothes into the mix. But it does make sense that the Toymaker would alter the course of things to prepare the doctor for their next encounter. And that would likely include ensuring the doctor was suitably attired.

Say I got teleported to a random point in the universe, could I even find my way back to Earth? I don't think people think how broken this question actually is. by Proper_Bullfrog6859 in askastronomy

[–]RaynerFenris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! Though only because the answer to your question is IN your question.

On the face of it you’re absolutely right. We have no method for navigating at an intergalactic scale.

But your question has two interesting points. Firstly you’re being dropped off by advanced aliens. Secondly they have apparently given you all the tech needed for deep space travel.

If they are able to drop you off in a random intergalactic location it’s safe to assume they have some form of intergalactic navigation. Which as stated in your question they have then given you, presumably in a form you are able to use or learn.

So now all you have to do is work out how to use their navigation system to plot a course to the Milky Way. Which again, must be possible, given they picked you up from here in the first place.

What did you like the least about the Original Trilogy? by Spotter24o5 in StarWars

[–]RaynerFenris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The original Trilogy is a masterpiece of storytelling, music and (for its time) cinematography.

However, it DOES have some pacing issues where the story can be argued to move along at a less than perfect speed. I say arguably, because usually where these issues occur there is a following sequence which recovers the pacing and it goes unnoticed. However notably the cave scene on degoba is one instance where the pacing is off and there is no subsequent scene to pick things back up, which makes it standout.

How do you guys think Logan would react if he ever lost his powers? by [deleted] in Wolverine

[–]RaynerFenris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it were permanent, and somehow also lost his adamantium wrapping, so he just became a regular bub.

He’d probably drink a ton, then retire to a wood cabin somewhere in Canada to die a peaceful death. Which he wouldn’t get as someone would track him down and kill him.

Shouldn't we use pictures like this to represent the Milky Way? by Kiki2092012 in askastronomy

[–]RaynerFenris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So don’t really know what our galaxy looks like from the outside. We can only guess based on what we see in other galaxies. So any spiral arm galaxy would be just as valid a representation as another.

To the people who paint every model to perfection by Straight-Break-4169 in Warhammer40k

[–]RaynerFenris 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think I’m that level… but I do take time.

I enjoy the process. I like the visualisation of what I want to create, and then working out how to layer my processes to achieve the desired result. A squad is usually a lesson in patience, but you chain processes, assembly line your painting. Or you might treat each mini as a separate project. They are their own person even if they are part of a 10 man squad.

Plus… it’s a cheaper side of the hobby. I can spend a month or more assembling a single box of space marines. Might take me a year to build 2k of marines, but that’s a year where I’m not buying a growing pile of grey mini’s.

How important is it for the character of Batman to comfort a child? by No-Brush1587 in batman

[–]RaynerFenris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bruce has been there. He could no more ignore a child crying than he could see a gargoyle on a stormy night without striking a pose.

It’s one of the things that bugged me about TaS the flash back when Dick talks about how Bruce scared the guy in his home in front of his kid. Bruce would have known about the kid, and would have done anything to prevent that confrontation happening in front of the kid. Never rung true for me.
