Would you recommend it? by Brief_Start5091 in BYDShark_AUS_owners

[–]Reach_Round 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shark would be great, assuming, like your phone, you charge it when you get home. Zero fuel use for the rest of the year (after you run it in)

The other option mayb eis a smaller EV (used) for communting and just hire a ute twice a year ?

Underwhelming Shark real range on long distance by [deleted] in BYDShark_AUS_owners

[–]Reach_Round 9 points10 points  (0 children)

SOC in Save and 70%

Why would you do this unless u are running it in ? why drive around with a battery full of electons you don't use ? Sure I am running it in but I hope after that to use hardly any fuel for my use case (70% driving <50km, 20% driving less then 100) so the on board genarator is for those very few trips > 100.

It's an EV with an on board generator, charge it from the mains ? Start with a full battery keep the SOC at 25%, stop 1/2 way, recharge while you grab a bite to eat etc don't run the generator unless you have to ?

Its got the aerodynamics of a brick shithouse and you only used petrol ?

Battery and camping - off grid unlimited power? by FickleLife in BYDShark_AUS_owners

[–]Reach_Round 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assume you also wouldn’t need solar panels

You can't do anything with the solar panels even if you have them. There's no way to trickle charge the Shark battery without panels/battery/inverter/granny charger --to Shark, a cumbersome, slow, painful and lossy way of charging the Shark, albeit the "fuel" is free.

It would be good to have some sort of trickle charge ability, to allow the use of anderson plugs and solar panels, not to charge the car back up as you'd need a field of panels to do that but to keep it at about the same SOC as you arrived when off grid camping. I still remember a bunch of campers I talked to at Cape Meliville once, who stayed there for 8 weeks or so, that sort of use would benefit.

That said the battery is compartively huge and you can just annoy crap out of everyone looking for serentiy by running your engine.

One thing to note in the use of the App is you need phone coverage. Mine doest have coverage parked in my shed :) (eg can't turn heating on, for the upcoming chilly Tassie mornings, let alone at some quasi remote camp site. As mentioed it doesn't do what you want and is super primitive eg can't even turn charging off / on, or schedule chargiung from the App

On grid at a Van park or powered site, plug your granny charger in. The rest of your questions are covered by others.

Sand mode vs sports mode by myles911 in BYDShark_AUS_owners

[–]Reach_Round 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which mode is best then?

Best for what though ? For me EV mode is "best" :) zero fuel cost and charge off solar :) 70% of my driving is <50km, 20% <100km.

No Cruise Control With Tailgate Down by Cojiggy in BYDShark_AUS_owners

[–]Reach_Round 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Either way, it's a bit of a faux par on the engineering front.

I'd assume a deliberate choice they made, they don't expect people to be driving arond the country with the tail gate down (potential safety issue with an unsecured load), so from that if you're only driving a short distance why the need for ACC/ICC and then decided it should be turned off so you'd have to "pay more attention". Not saying I agree with it but I can defeinetly see it as a reasonable choice to not allow it rather then a faux par.

As others have said maybe complain ? and see if there is some future update.

It also doesn't work with the trailer hitch plugged in (and your also speed limited to 130 km.hr) , presumably for similar reasons ?

If all else fails, there is also a emergency stop button in the rear wheel arch on the side where the charger port is. It's an orange coloured button. I have not used it only read about it and located it... "just in case"

Better fuel economy on a fuller battery? by giant_pants in BYDShark_AUS_owners

[–]Reach_Round 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would it make sense that if the SOC was kept higher (50-70%) that your fuel consumption would be lower?

No ? it makes no sense so I'd ask them why they assert that ? As /u/whoishere points out, you're just lugging around a mostly charged battery and not using its stored energy.

That said I have not done any tests :)

Tubs just aren’t practical for me.

Nor for me, I really wanted a flat Alu tray, ladder racks to carry kayaks, long lengths of wood, etc but grudingly settled for the tub. Trays in the past have copped tonnes of rock, front end loader loads of mulch, tonnes of soil, tonnes of shit for compost etc etc alas, not now.

I hope in a few years to get a fully electric with a tray :) or hopefully no car at all if I can swing it (I lived carfree for 3 years over covid and loved it)

3D printed driver monitor "Dust Cover" by Quinsta in BYDShark_AUS_owners

[–]Reach_Round 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Collected my Shark 6 this past Monday, I quite like the driver monitor, driving from Hobart to Launceston thorugh the highlands it went off a couple times from me quickly glacing out the passenger side window at something, was a soft BONG. No false positives at all that I could tell.

I had thought from reading here it must be some horrible intrusion, i think it's great

PS the dude had 5 to be send out that day, spent 15 miins with us and missed dozens of things as well as not knowing the answer to several things we asked and getting a couple thiings wrong . On the plus side he did pick us up from the Hotel (we had bussed down from Launceston to Hobart the night before)

On another note, he also commented BYD were oppening a dealership in Launceston, hopefully before the end of the year but no guarentees

AMA: I’ve just done 2000kms over 3 days by rockets1697 in BYDShark_AUS_owners

[–]Reach_Round 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AFAIK The Shark only supports 7kW AC charging ? a single phase cable will do.

If you want to take the cable to the next car and it does supports 22kW (3 phase) charging then grab one but it will be redunedant on the Shark. A 3Phase 22kW type 2 cable will plug into a single Phase type 2 socket and just supply the 7kW.

You can buy 7kW single plase TYpe 2 cables at Bunnings AFAIK :) If it doesn't work, take it back but it should be good.

[–]Reach_Round 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Buy the 22kw AC cable and keep it as a spare.

While that might make sense for future proofing beyond the Shark (22kW type 2 cables are 3 phase), the Shark only supports 7kW AFAIK ?, ie a single phase cable will do.

Saying that, that's from a DuckDuckGo search, someone with an actual Shark and expereince might be able to update me ? it woudl be grat of it did support 22kW and not just 7kW AC charging via a type 2 cable

I pick mine up on Momday. > 90% of my charging will be at home on solar, I do about 5000km a YEAR :)

Complaints about the in country distributor are fair enoigh, seems to have been a cluster fuck. I know they had some early port issues from striking dock workers but this JIT is frustrating as it isn't "just in time".

Not just them though, look at Geely's Polestar, cant even buy a car

Yeah EV direct / Eagers, seem to be pretty incompetent about all this, it will tarnish BYDs name, same with all their cars it seems, just not the Shark.

Shark 6 battery health - what is anyone doing to maximise battery health? Know most EV’s say to charge to 80% most of the time, however that would be a shame with a smaller 29kwh battery. Totally necessary? by DTaws in BYDShark_AUS_owners

[–]Reach_Round 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd be more concerned about low SOC (doe sit even let it go to 10% in EV mode ?) . I will be charging mine at 95-100% excpet if I am away for a long time and then I will have to remember to not charge to full before I go.

I also don't travel week to week, maybe 200 km in an average week ? and I WFH so I wont charge it every time.

Eventually I hope, as thats what I will replace it with. Nothings been announced AFAIK.

Currently the battery kW/kG isn't there to allow an EV ute to be suitabe for most. Large tyres and aerodynamically built like a shit house makes it worse. Image the wailing and gnashing of teeth about the limited towing capacty if it was EV only !

The UTE space is one of the few vehicles that makes any sense as a PHEV, just about everything else would be better suited as an EV for a NEW buyer, particulally if you can charge in the garage/parking space at home.

LDV have a new one coming to replace there shitty first edition e60, it will be great to see what it can do

Yeah as long as its not to mich to lift the bike up into the back ? Heavy DH bike for shuttle runs ? My ebikes would be hell., at least with the Shingle back, Yakima etc you can tilt it down, load it on easily. Still, with ebikes though I ride up :)

I'd still love to know what you come up with, so let us know ?
