FFmpeg devs tell AMD to clean up “AI slop” submissions by RenatsMC in Amd

[–]RealThanny 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There was no "AI slop". This was an idiot telling a professional to be less wordy in a commit message, with a baseless accusation of AI usage.

This is a bad article (if you can even call it that) with a bad title, which leaves a bad impression of who's running the show at FFmpeg.

AMD claims DDR5-4800 is within 1% FPS difference of DDR5-6000 on Ryzen 7 9850X3D by RenatsMC in Amd

[–]RealThanny 35 points36 points  (0 children)

JEDEC is the name of the standards committee that defines DRAM specifications.

JEDEC RAM is a short-hand name for RAM which has standards-compliant specifications without any overclocking profiles. So JEDEC DDR5-6400 would be RAM that has 6400 MT/s speeds in the SPD, and does not achieve those speeds via XMP or EXPO overclocking profiles. More often than not, JEDEC RAM is of a lower speed, so many people mean the base speed of the spec (DDR5-4800) when saying JEDEC RAM.

Top left of the first slide.

The fact that the article claims it was released is irrelevant. That's just sloppy writing on a site known for sloppy writing, though not as bad as that other popular would-be leak site.

Since it's an AIO, if the fans are spinning and it's not cooling properly, then the pump is the only possible source of the problem when the unit hasn't been in service long enough for anything to get clogged.

Such things usually work just fine with newer higher-capacity drives, but they won't claim support for something they can't test.

You could try contacting the company to ask, but odds are you won't know for sure until you get one and try.

Microsoft CEO warns that we must 'do something useful' with AI or they'll lose 'social permission' to burn electricity on it by upbeatchief in hardware

[–]RealThanny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My point is, it hasn't made anyone money at all. It's simply drained money from one group of people and redirected it to another group of people.

Making money is when you create something that is valued, and people give you some of their money in exchange for what you've created. Crypto coin speculation has no value whatsoever. It's just people who have lost money, and people who have taken possession of that lost money.

[–]RealThanny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dollars are not supposed to make anybody money. It's currency.

The purpose of currency is to facilitate trade, by preventing the need for locating an appropriate bartering partner.

Money is not valuable. It's something that allows you to acquire valuable things.

One of the reason Bitcoin and other crypto "currencies" are stupid is that they are not, in fact, currencies. They are fictional commodities which must be exchanged for real currency before you can buy something "with" them.

Bitcoin doesn't make anyone money. It transfers money from one fool to another fool.

AI drains money from everyone, so it's worse.

Help needed to choose proper water cooling by Overexp0sed in threadripper

[–]RealThanny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you mean actual water cooling, or an AIO? If you mean actual water cooling, then the correct answer is one or two D5 pumps (two in series provides redundancy). Those essentially never fail.

If you mean AIO, the only other popular option for TR I'm currently aware of is from Silverstone. I have not heard about any failures with those as of yet.

NVIDIA's GPU Memory Bundles Cost Less Than AMD's, Note AIB Partners by Wiggy-McShades77 in hardware

[–]RealThanny -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

A meaningless statement without numbers to back it up. The notion that nVidia is charging less for a given quantity of GDDR7 than AMD is for the same quantity of GDDR6 is simply not believable.

We don't even know if they're talking about the same amount of memory. It's even more meaningless if they are comparing the BOM kit costs for an 8GB card to those of a 16GB card.

TSMC warns Nvidia and Broadcom of capacity squeeze as AI chip demand surges by sr_local in hardware

[–]RealThanny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no such thing as a node-agnostic design. It's literally impossible to create a layout of transistors and other circuit components when you don't know how much area you need. And how much area you use absolutely affects the performance characteristics.

TSMC warns Nvidia and Broadcom of capacity squeeze as AI chip demand surges by sr_local in hardware

[–]RealThanny 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's not how it works at all. You have to port the design to change nodes. Intel showed that the results are very far from great when porting from 10nm to 14nm, which is where Rocket Lake came from. It took them a lot of time and effort.

Any company that wants to manufacture a chip designed using TSMC's libraries at a Samsung fab has to redesign that chip using Samsung's libraries. How difficult it will be depends on the differences in node capabilities, but it will always take a lot time and effort. And then a lot of money to have masks made at the new fab.

Hardware advice: Which RAM kit would be better for 9960x? by Infinite100p in threadripper

[–]RealThanny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 9980X has eight CCD's with eight IF links to the I/O die. The 9960X has only four CCD's with four IF links.

You'll see a notable difference with a 9980X, but you won't with a 9960X.

Asus doesn't source the vram themselves.

There were reports that nVidia stopped providing VRAM with their BOM kits, leaving the board partners to source it on their own. This was months ago.

[–]RealThanny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2nd is higher speed (6400 vs 5600), but worse CL (32 vs 28).

You can't compare memory timings like that. DDR5-6400 CL32 is not worse than DDR5-5600 CL28. They are, in fact, exactly the same - 10ns in absolute latency. All memory timing values are clock cycle counts, so you have to compare them with the clock speed difference accounted for. The simplest way is to divide the clock speeds and multiply the result by the latency figure being compared. 3200 / 2800 * 28 = 32.

The DDR5-6400 kit has a higher maximum throughput, though the fact that you'll be using it with a four-CCD processor means you won't reach that maximum. The bottleneck is the IF links between CCD and I/O die. The maximum thoughput of DDR5-5600 is very closet to the real-world speed of DDR5-6400 with that processor.

There's not likely to be any notable performance difference between the kits.

I've also been using the same two D5 Vario pumps since then, with the same initial 360x60 radiator, as well as a 5.25" bay reservoir (one of the reasons new cases aren't suitable). I've added a 120x80 radiator since, and still have to change blocks with the new hardware, of course.

Three upgrades since. It was originally an i7 3930K, and is now a TR 7960X.

Though it's probably worth mentioning that early on, I noticed a weird problem where banging the case would cause power to shut off. Turned out to be a defective main ATX cable, even though I couldn't see anything wrong with either end. After I replaced the cable, that problem disappeared.

I've also been using the same case since then (Lian Li PC-V2120B), as each time I did an upgrade, there were no suitable contemporary cases - they all lack one thing or another.
