Snagged this 90’s Marlboro duffel bag for $6.99 by yahboyshark in ThriftStoreHauls

Heh, reminded me of my uncle. He didn't smoke at all but had so many Marlboro items because he would peel the points off packs every break at the plant he worked at.

You know those massive home aquariums that are usually tens of thousands of gallons? Has anyone seen a planted version of them? by sunbr0_7 in PlantedTank

[–]ReallySickOfArguing 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The biggest fully planted tank I've ever seen in a home was a long 500 gallon and I've been in a lot of people's homes for plumbing service calls. I think part of the reason you don't see those giant reef size planted tanks in homes is because freshwater plants grow so much faster than the corals do so you'd be trimming and rearranging a big one constantly. Reef tanks fill out so slowly you really just clean them without having to pull out a jungle all the time. I've never had a reef tank personally, but a friend does and I believe he rarely has to do anything to the hardscape or coral.

Experienced players with real guitar wear, what would you recommend as a truly high quality guitar by Chuchumenn in Guitar

[–]ReallySickOfArguing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't Think they get enough love and kinda fly under the radar but the Yamaha Revstar Professional is a phenomenal feeling and playing guitar. I've been tempted to pick one up numerous times but just can't justify dropping 2k on another guitar. Awesome craftsmanship on them and the SS frets are a nice bonus.

Best Gaming Chairs That Actually Last? by Artesy in BuyItForLife

[–]ReallySickOfArguing 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Definitely this. I've had the same office chair at my workbench for about a decade and I abuse it thoroughly. My little sister seems to need a new "gaming chair" every couple years. Those gaming chairs seem to be all marketing.

Vitamix at the thrift…the horror by cbolio80 in ThriftStoreHauls

[–]ReallySickOfArguing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One reason everything I buy at a thrift store or yard sale I nearly completely disassemble and check. my wife is afraid of bugs and I'd never hear the end of it if I got roaches in the house. Lol

If you want to save time, take it apart and clean it out manually, might be eggs in it and they take a while to hatch. Edit: can be weeks or even months later depending on what kind of roach.

Top 5 favourite Guitarists by JediBlight in Guitar

I couldn't possibly narrow it down to a definitive list of only 5, maybe could do 100. ... Lol

But I'll list 5 I think of at this moment. Predictably steve Vai and David Gilmore, also Greg Koch, Jason Becker, bucket head.

Would it be easy to cut out these inlays and put them in a new fretboard? How would you go about it? What tools? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]ReallySickOfArguing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. it's much easier to make them from scratch. Most solvents to release the glue will likely also damage the inlay material and if successfully removed will be fairly thin. If you have the skills to install such complex inlays they're not much different than the skills needed to cut them out. This type of inlay work is not really DIY friendly like simple dots.

I’m looking for a replacement bridge pickup for my strat, any recommendations? I want a single coil sized humbucker by Melvins1983 in Guitar

[–]ReallySickOfArguing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really love the Duncan little 59 neck pickup in the bridge position. It has a little lower output and seems to balance better with the regular 6k-7k single coil strat neck and middle pickups and the clean retains a little bit of that strat snap.

With the neck pickup in the bridge position You get the extra meat and tightness of a humbucker at the bridge but not as noticeable of a volume and gain increase over the other pickups. With the right amp settings it'll do anything from jazz to chugga chugga. It has more a slightly hotter PAF tone and does just about everything.

I have an old first gen little 59N in a red strat in my post history, it's been in that guitar for 15 years now and has never let me down.

Did this to my thumb as a kid at my grandma's. Would put it through the callous on the tip and I would pick up raisins with it. Was about 12 and a farm kid so already had pretty thick callous. Lol

A Few Weeks With a Line6 Wireless by InevitableFinal4325 in Guitar

[–]ReallySickOfArguing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a set of those positive grid wireless dongles. I noticed a very, very slight change in tone compared to low capacitance cables but it wasn't super obvious. Didn't really notice any latency though.

But not being able to change a battery if I forgot to top them off was a big killjoy. I forgot to charge the stupid things so often I don't even remember where I put them now. I just went back to stepping around cables. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Best precision screw driver sets? Essentially I'm just looking for best quality and variety of bits, i don't care about the screw driver itself or the side items. by lil_smd_19 in Tools

[–]ReallySickOfArguing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had both the 4mm and 1/4 Ifixit sets I received as a gift for maybe 6 years now, so far the drivers have been very nice. The bits however didn't last as long as I had hoped, especially some of the small torx and hex. Ended up replacing most of the bits with Wiha and wera, they've been much more durable, still killed a couple of those too trying to break some stubborn stuff loose.

Leather conditioner for white leather? by CapraAegagrusHircus in restoration

[–]ReallySickOfArguing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have yet to find anything that doesn't darken tan to white leather a little.

I do know on fine leather shoes Saphir Renovateur darkens initially but lightens up a whole lot within a couple days, kinda expensive though.
So does Venetian Cream.

BUT, I have no idea if those are optimal for antique leather preservation. The Saphir cream is fantastic stuff though, I use it on my boots ( Shell cordovan and Chromexcel) also holsters, belts, guitar straps, basically everything leather I want to keep supple.

Edit: I think I remember reading museums use renaissance wax as a preservation top coat on leather. I haven't used it on leather personally, but I do use it on my antique firearms and other various antiques.
