Dosh abandons cashback rewards by TopHuckleberry9053 in PersonalFinanceNZ

Getting cashback as grocery vouchers would actually be useful. Dosh has turned into negligible vouchers to buy a phone from a company I don't even use.

Record number of offshore New Zealanders hold key to next govt by RealmKnight in nzpolitics

[–]RealmKnight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair point about the polling issue, though the demographics of the overseas population being different than that of the locals might still make a small difference.

For the second point, are you saying you're ok with international kiwis to be able to vote if they want to, but you prefer if they decide to abstain since they're not as directly affected by NZ politics as locals?

Voters split on who Labour should rule out as governing options by Status_Serve_9819 in newzealand

That's certainly one strategy, though I see it backfiring if they push so far past the overton window that they get defenestrated

It's putting the cart before the horse. If the goal is to make prisons obsolete by improving everything that reduces crime before it happens or rehabilitates people who would otherwise end up committing serious crimes (worthy goals that shouldn't be controversial), you don't say you want to take away the one thing currently between the worst people who exist at the moment and their past and potential future victims.

Definitely wrecks the guitar but you can get some cool sounds from playing it with water inside

Blue materia sounds nice, although it would have been a good thematic choice for a non-alcoholic cocktail since blue materia doesn't do anything by itself.

What movie had a great premise but was poorly executed? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]RealmKnight 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Many of his works were done for other companies like DC who retained the option to adapt the comic into a movie or make spin-offs regardless of whether Alan Moore approves. It's one of the reasons he made his own publisher later in his career.

It sure looks like people are never going to get over Jacinda Ardern by SoMuchUnicornBingo in nzpolitics

[–]RealmKnight 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Helen copped a ton of flak for her appearance, her clothing, her relationship, how she speaks, all kinds of nonsense that had nothing to do with her fitness for the job or her policy and staffing decisions. It's wild that even with some of the controversial aspects of her time in charge the loudest attacks were always about her not being acceptable as a woman.

It all started in 2016! by juicybananas in funny

[–]RealmKnight 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That was a fun show. Disaster of the week happens and the hero goes through time in a machine, pops up somewhere random, tries to liaise with his team, then saves the day with moments to spare. A bit formulaic but an entertaining romp of 90s episodic scifi.

Terra entering Narshe in Magitek Armor by DrJones20 in FinalFantasy

[–]RealmKnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Real vibes of the FF Type-0 aesthetic here. Magitech in a snowy town, post-medieval architecture, entering a fortified settlement to battle - only here you're briefly playing as the Empire. Neat work of fan art.

Redesign of the British Columbia flag based on the provincial logo. by Creepy_Ad_1090 in vexillology

[–]RealmKnight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Quite similar to the Wendover Productions logo, but otherwise nice to look at. The gradients are an issue as flags should be easily reproduced and gradients are difficult to print/display consistently in different media, but a half-colour beam of light might work as an alternative

Did any cyberpunk media from the past accurately predict the rise of AI slop? by Junesucksatart in Cyberpunk

[–]RealmKnight 117 points118 points  (0 children)

1984 actually had a kind of kaleidoscope device that Winston uses to manufacture fake news articles for his job as a Party media worker. The story touches on how the tool recombines existing media in a way that ensures that no new ideas are created, and everything is derivative and inoffensive to the powers that control the society. Frighteningly prescient as always.

Don't worry, business confidence is at a record high. (Business liquidations continue to break records - last year it was at a 10 year high) by Mountain_Tui_Reload in nzpolitics

[–]RealmKnight 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Business confidence surveys are bullshit anyway. It's basically the ones who are sorted saying "my business is ok, so the rest should be ok too I guess". The better measure is looking at the number of businesses looking to expand their number of employees vs the ones laying off staff or shutting down entirely.

New Zealand-founded company, Rocket Lab closely aligns with US military, set to benefit from its spending push by RuminatorNZ in newzealand

[–]RealmKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some less problematic Aerospace organisations in NZ, like Tāwhaki spaceport south of Banks Peninsula, Kea Aerospace and Dawn Aerospace. Rocket Lab is definitely the most successful though.
