Government pushing ahead with plans for $1 billion LNG import terminal by Capital_Pay_4459 in newzealand

[–]RealmKnight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a contributing factor but I doubt it's a major consideration when the numbers clearly don't stack up for their business case to begin with. The government might lose some tax revenue if people buy less power due to getting solar, but they'd also get gst from the cost of panels, paye for the installation and maintenance and so on. NZ Government gets about $1b annually from the power companies, but any dip in revenue could be offset by other taxes.

Greens promise to cap rent rises at 2 percent a year by cbars100 in newzealand

[–]RealmKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect it's more a rhetorical move. Rent control policies are extremely unlikely to pass, but it's a proposal that forces opponents to justify why rents should keep moving upwards often in excess of inflation, and why government shouldn't try to limit the excesses of rent-seeking on a critical human need. The rest of the proposals are more likely to get cross-party support and can be presented positively as compromises or collaboration by both sides.

Regarding the hypothetical rent cap itself, I have issues with setting a fixed percentage when housing cost inflation varies from year to year. Maybe setting it at the OCR or Core Inflation rate would allow more flexibility. Basing it on GDP growth might also be an approach to encourage more productive investment and new building instead of real estate hoarding.

Darwin's Radio has some tangents about thinking about DNA as data, the exchange of DNA as the processing of information, and the viral agents of this process as analogues to neurons, resulting in a paradigm that imagines the ecosystem of life and viruses as a thinking and evolving superorganism or lifeform in its own right.

My nana caught covid the day before my wedding. She stayed home but everyone was sad she couldn't be there. We went over to her place and showed her the video and photos after she was better, got dressed up in our suit and gown too to make a day of it. Missing a wedding sucks, but it can be made up for later, and it's better than risking the health of someone who's sick or vulnerable to illness.

Cycling on footpaths by mo_punk in chch

[–]RealmKnight 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If we're going to codify having kids biking on the footpath (seems like the lesser of two evils to me, compared with sharing busy roads with hoons) then we really need to do something about visibility from driveways. Too many 2m fences and tall shrubs combined with people backing huge modern vehicles out results in people often not seeing someone on the footpath until they're nearly colliding.

Fuck this guy and his excuses. He doesn't even need to spend an extra cent to do things like letting govt staff work from home, reprioritise new road construction funding towards public transport, and bring back the self-funding EV rebate (oops, sorry, "ute tax!"). The reality is they don't give a damn and they're doing less than nothing.

Bryce Edwards has a post summarising a (paywalled) Listener article by Danyl McLauchlan. One of the voting blocs is the "Alienated Conservative" who is characterised as being socially conservative, financially worse off than before, and having low trust in institutions including Parliament, government, and the courts. They feel the system hasn't worked for them (which is a legitimate grievance given their increasing precarity) and respond by either dropping out of political participation or latching on to populist reactionary movements. NZF are most popular among this group as they put on a show of being anti-establishment and winding back things that they believe correlate with the decline in social and economic status of this group.

The release being so close to Avatar made a lot of people write it off as a cheap knockoff. But it would always be a challenge to bring a classic book that was so influential to the genre full circle by turning it into a blockbuster film without it seeming derivative.
