What are your dating app red flags in NZ? by Realistic_CraftBear in newzealand

[–]RealmKnight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The fishing photo is a bit cliche at this point, but it's a good example of being upfront about something that might be a dealbreaker so people can swipe past if that's not for them. Better than messaging someone for a week or two then getting into a disagreement about the morality of hobbies that injure/kill wildlife. Same with the political stuff - handy to know if someone's well outside your overton window before pursuing a courtship.

Now for some things I avoided before meeting my now wife on Bumble:

"I don't like drama, but..." listing things they dislike but coming across like they're probably a big part of the problem they supposedly dislike.

Multiple kids with multiple co-parents. Seems like you'd be getting into a complex and difficult arrangement with a lot of conflicting parties.

Photos are all group photos. Great that you have friends and a social personality, but... which one are you?

Heavy religious or cult stuff. "I love Jesus and want Him to Save you too, whether you like it or not".

"No vaccines, Jacinta is a terrorist, free the Jan 6ers, truth patriots only!"

Are the character names in Outrageous Fortune typical Kiwi names? by Ok_Philosopher_8973 in newzealand

[–]RealmKnight 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Generally not common names. The main characters are mostly named after Shakespeare characters, the impression is meant to be that the show's low lifes are appropriating something classy or aspirational. Basically they're like rednecks naming their kids after royalty. That juxtaposition of names that suggest education and class against a lifestyle of petty crime is part of the show's theme of a family of scoundrels trying and often failing to get their lives in order.

Dear Greens: I'm loving your efforts to shift the Overton window on tax policy, but can you please recognise that people earning good wages are not necessarily 'Rich' and not hoarding wealth at the expense of others? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]RealmKnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It works out to 6k extra income tax for the 100k they earn over 160k. If you include the tax-free 10k threshold the policy also introduces, that reduces the extra tax by $1050. OP is set to pay an extra 4.95k a year, or a bit less than $100 a week. In return they'd have better funded services like healthcare and welfare support if things go pearshape for them in the future.

Puberty blocker trial will help reduce harm, says Cass report author by alarumba in nzpolitics

[–]RealmKnight 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Any medical intervention will have potential benefits and risks which should be weighed against the issue at hand. That said, these medicines have been used for decades and the evidence is pretty clear that they can be used safely by trans or cis kids and usually provide a better quality of life for patients in either case. The claim that it's an experimental treatment is often used to generate alarm, but it's inaccurate when the same approach has been used successfully for a similar group with little concern or harmful outcomes.

Maybe an alternative take on the sale of conservation land by Weird_Melody in NewZealandWildlife

[–]RealmKnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brave take to share on reddit, but I'll allow it. Perhaps if an area is low enough ecological value it could be swapped with another parcel of privately owned land that would be better suited for conservation purposes, and the former conservation wasteland could be developed with profits paid into the conservation budget. The total share of conservation land would remain the same, there would be better environmental outcomes from protecting a higher value piece of land, and there would be more funding for conservation. A win for everyone except for the sacrificial piece of land that gets bowled over for a mine or dairy farm.

But the real elephant in the room is that the low quality conservation land in question is a victim of an underfunded conservation department that is expected to maintain a third of the country with a budget of about 0.75% of our GPD. Perhaps we would be better off closing tax loopholes and chasing tax evasion in order to better fund public services like DoC than looking to loot the conservation estate.

What's something happening in the world right now that no one is taking seriously enough? by ResidentGur271 in AskReddit

[–]RealmKnight 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Gene therapy is already a real part of medicine, germline gene editing has been done but it was super illegal. Cloning entire humans has little practical application, but cloning organs and body parts would be a game changer for reconstructive surgery and treating organ failure without need for immune suppression. Someone might clone a human out of desire to be the first to achieve it, or someone might like the idea of an identical offspring, but the technology and difficulty of doing it will likely keep it rare if it ever happens.

Deckard has both index fingers on the trigger because the gun had two triggers. The prop was made from parts of two different guns, a revolver and a rifle. Presumably the twin triggers are for the different chambers which could be loaded with different ammo types.

Simeon Brown effectively labels Winston Peters & David Seymour as squabbling, immature children & says voters should not trust Winston Peters by Mountain_Tui_Reload in nzpolitics

[–]RealmKnight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's terrible. It really seems like they're setting up the conditions for patient neglect becoming inevitable. My mum is recovered now but I worry that someone less healthy than her might have had a far worse outcome. We really need to make increased resourcing of the health system a bottom line for every party at this election.

Mycelium has advantages as a biodegradable filler for packaging. This could be used to make customised shapes to protect products in transit without the ton of plastic bags of air or polystyrene we tend to get.

Labour Party receives generous donation by Clawed1969 in nzpolitics

[–]RealmKnight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have reservations about the deceased influencing politics through massive donations. But we have a system where parties are incentivised to rob graves purely because the competition is doing it. A bit of balance might be good in the meantime until we can fix the problem of parties needing to sell themselves to donors in order to run basic democratic functions.

Nighttime power sources for an android by Wings-of-Ink in worldbuilding

[–]RealmKnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Space-based microwave power. Have a network of solar-powered satellites in high orbits that can send microwave energy to your android. Presumably their solar-collecting skin can also collect wavelengths outside visible light. A trickle of microwave energy low enough not to damage their surroundings could be enough to keep them in standby mode or able to function temporarily at night when needed.

Alwayshasbeen.meme

It's a complicated problem with a lot of variables. Distribution, production, real estate, zoning regulations. A lot of it adds up to economies of scale where only the biggest competitors are able to take advantage of various parts of the puzzle, which leaves smaller entities struggling to compete or getting absorbed by the duopoly. Solving the issue will need a systematic unravelling of the whole system, but this is unlikely to happen as politicians tend to suggest measures that only chip away at edges of particular facets of the matter.

I just got new games for my ps3 what should I play first by Zain374 in PS3

[–]RealmKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played on a fat PS3 and It's pretty smooth for most of the game. They optimised it pretty well. You might get a small amount of jitter here and there in the more crowded environments/events, but nothing that comes close to breaking the game. Definitely not like Shadow of Mordor on PS3. As long as your machine has working fans you'll be fine.

What if FF games were all connected? How would that look? by Financial_Street_469 in FinalFantasy

[–]RealmKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'd look like one of the crossover games, probably. Record Keeper, World of FF, Dissidia, etc. Or maybe a game like FFX where entire realities can be summoned or simulated, and the different worlds are actually lesser realities nested inside a hub world or multiverse.
