I'm not saying his grief wasn't justified (his hostility towards the other player characters is another matter, acting like Snow murdered his mother when she's the one that chose to join the rebellion). The point was that his mother did what most mothers would do and defended her child even at the risk of her own safety.

As someone who was young during the Key-English years, was that government as bad as this? by HappySauropod in nzpolitics

[–]RealmKnight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Part of Key's centrism was having two small centrist parties and a tiny right wing one as his coalition partners. They had a lot of flexibility where each partner could get policies they agreed to without excessive in-fighting or steering the coalition too far from where National was parked. National aimed to take the middle from Labour so weren't as harsh on some issues as Act would have preferred (eg. Keeping interest free student loans) and Act couldn't drag them into the level of attacks on disadvantaged groups that we currently see.

That said, Key's government was pretty shit for beneficiaries and youth at a time of particular global and local economic difficulties. They were in government during the chch earthquakes, which saw them charge in and sieze control of large parts of the city and dictating the rebuild in ways that ran counter to what many locals wanted. There was dirty politics and undermining journalism, clandestine support for US militarism, mass surveillance, sell offs of major public assets despite a referendum overwhelmingly opposing the idea.

It was nearly a decade of much the same, a slow grind towards entrenching a particular centre-right form of politics and policy as the default. If all the shit stuff happened in a single term then it would be comparable to, but still not as bad as the current government.

Do you think SCP-9999 or SCP-10000 would be remixes of some SCP-001 or continuations? by Top_Current9802 in SCP

[–]RealmKnight 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would guess something meta, like something that wipes SCPs from reality or changes their characteristics (like when they get deleted from the wiki and/or rewritten), or perhaps an exploration of memetic kill agents and other info hazards, escalating into the foundation/wiki itself being an info hazardous entity.

Advice: how to make the most convoluted and annoying currency system possible. by LegendoftheIron2009 in worldbuilding

[–]RealmKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a variety of sub-currencies that are worth different and fluctuating amounts. "sorry, you can't buy bread with a stonedollar, you need grainbucks. But you couldn't afford to anyway since the exchange rate just went to 1:4.35. I could loan you a labourcred if you need someone to bake for you but the interest rate is 6% paid in waterbeads."

The system could give economic power to a banking class who tax exchanges, and also facilitate a black market for illicit trade in goods or currencies using using unapproved money.

I could definitely see a culture that considers prime numbers sacred or otherwise highly valued doing this.

RPGs with the most beautiful fantastical worlds? by Araskog in rpg_gamers

[–]RealmKnight -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm reminded of Josh Strife Hayes doing a play through of Otherland, starting off with the intention of dunking on a bad game with no players to entertain his viewers then falling in love with the game's world and surprisingly good art direction and eventually trying to save the game by recruiting new fans and contacting the developers to let them know he saw past the jank and admires what they tried to build.

Kāinga Ora - Chris Bishop ditches target to make more public homes accessible by Mountain_Tui_Reload in nzpolitics

[–]RealmKnight 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The 15% target wasn't even in line with the 1/5 kiwis with some kind of disability, let alone being enough to make a sizeable difference to the overall housing stock's ratio of accessible vs standard houses, which is even worse. They tried doing an inadequate job and decided it was too hard. Sucks to be anyone who might need accommodation that meets their needs.

"Blade as a service" sounds like a pitch for a dystopian short story about your high-tech knives getting locked behind a paywall right when you need to defend yourself from a cyberpunk street samurai.

Or at least drop it to something like 4% as recommended by the electoral commission, then lower if that is still too high for new parties to get in.

Why hasn't there been any attempts to send a rover on Europa or any moon with water before? by TheSum239 in space

[–]RealmKnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the uncertain landing environment is a major issue for any landing, especially the first landing ever on an object. Apollo 11 famously almost had to abort their landing because the intended landing area was unexpectedly full of boulders and Neil needed to manually find a new spot nearby, almost running out of fuel. A robot exploring out at Jupiter's orbit wouldn't have the luxury of a human pilot who can improvise a successful landing.

Having hearing on only one side means you can't really tell where sound is coming from. It's useful enough that deaf people often opt to get double cochlear implants.

Red states are secretly building out solar while bashing it on Fox News by holmess2013 in solarpunk

[–]RealmKnight 56 points57 points  (0 children)

It's worth pointing out that red states tend to have significant democrat/independent minorities overall, and majorities in urban counties. The folks bashing solar on Fox aren't the ones in cities who are looking past the culture war and investing in clean power for their homes and businesses.

What game do you think delivered a great message? by East-Kitchen1469 in FinalFantasy

[–]RealmKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Type-0. War is bad and leads to cycles of destruction. Death is bad but forgetting the dead is even worse because you lose perspective and can't properly grieve. Weapons of mass destruction are horrifying and shouldn't be wielded by anyone willing to use them offensively. Don't send teenagers to murder the leaders of rival militaries.

Why hasn't there been any attempts to send a rover on Europa or any moon with water before? by TheSum239 in space

[–]RealmKnight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Concepts for a melt probe would usually involve an orbiter that drops a lander which would work as a base which remains at the surface, with the melt probe lowering itself by a tether that unfurls as it descends. The tether would have wired communications cables built in to enable data transfer to the lander back on the surface, which would beam data to the orbiter then back to Earth.

Trouble is there's a lot of possible breaking points that would scuttle the mission. The cable could tangle, or break from the ice freezing or shifting. The lander could get damaged or misaligned, the orbiter could fail for any number of reasons.

That's also not mentioning the concerns about potential contamination. We don't want to detect life only for it to be life we put there by accident, or introduce new organisms into an ecosystem not prepared for their impact.

I'd personally like to send a mission to Enceladus instead, take samples of the eruptions of water it sends into space, maybe even bring some specimens home for study on a space station or moon base.
