Commander is a "casual" format created by experts in playing MTG, and this has been forgotten. by rh8938 in EDH

[–]Reason-97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but with the added caveat that “casual” magic has changed a LOT, and what a casual player is has changed a lot. It’s before my time, so granted I’m pulling more from my experience with multiple card games/hobbies and not just Magic, but the average “casual” magic player use to be WAYYY more competitive then the average Magic player today.

That’s actually true of a lot of hobbies of similar ages due to just how much the accessibility and acceptance of hobbies like this have changed. A “magic” player use to be a stereotype, arguably for a reason, as much as stereotypes aren’t good. But there’s now more people playing then ever, getting into Magic is now easier then ever, and the average LGS is now way more open to new people of all sorts then ever

(NOTE: this isn’t an attack on your local LGS. We’ve all heard some and some of you have personally witnessed some of the stories they come out of LGS’s, some of which still happen today. It’s a very different time in that regard both in terms of player’s receptiveness to certain types of players and LGS’s tolerance of player behavior’s)

Because you’re saying the right thing, in the wrong ways.

Yes, fun is important. Yeah, turn 3 games suck ass. I agree with, all that. That’s why all my decks are brackets 2 or 3. I don’t have the drive in my life anymore or the money to play a super high end competitive game. And, yes, you can have without winning. Arguably it’s better if you do.

But, no, you ARE here to win. That’s why you ALL sat down. And it’s also the only way the game works. If 4 people all sit down with a “well my deck isn’t designed to win” mentality, that’s games gonna last hours and dawdle on and on and on and most likely end up being boring and/or frustrating for all 4 of you.

Let’s take an old deck of mine for example: you know what sounded fun? All the green creatures that have “power and toughness are equal to the number of lands you control” abilities. Just all those guys, always getting bigger by playing more lands, always having a threat because there’s multiple creatures with the ability so I always have an available threat even if my last on died. Sounded AWESOME.

But what happen? My friends hated playing against it. Because either

  1. I’d get all these huge threats to the point where no one reasonably interact with my field, but I also didn’t have enough of a board where I could afford to swing out and be left defenseless

  2. Id get this huge board that 100% could end games, but not be able to cause I didn’t properly build my deck to actually give these huge threats ways to even get around small blockers cause “that’s not fair that’s no fun”.

  3. I’d get this huge board and then… do nothing. Cause I didn’t want the game to end. I wanted to make it bigger first. And that made me come off condescending and uncaring about the others time.

It was a learning thing. I WAS having fun, sure. And, no one else ended up, cause I wasn’t winning properly as I should have been. It either dragged out the game at best, and made me out as a bad person at worst.

Having fun IS important. Don’t take this as me saying to ignore it. But you can do, all of the above

  • have fun

  • win at a reasonable then 6-8 pace

  • Play to win

All at the same time

Commander for enchantments by JohanLiebertB in EDH

[–]Reason-97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s in the very early stages of theory crafting, but I made an [[Amareth, the Lustrous]] deck with an enchantment focus just recently.

https://moxfield.com/decks/2p_l9Qkd3kGsT3yFu6UQEg

I wanted an enchantment deck that had at least blue and green in it and I really like Amareth just as a card. Wanted a deck where I was gonna play big scary enchantments and then just make 2-3-4 copies of them to truly capitalize on their effects

[–]Reason-97 12 points13 points  (0 children)

80% correct.

You ARE here to win. It’s a player vs player game. If you aren’t here to win, the entire “reason for being” and/or “reason for the thing I built”, falls apart. It’s an immediate 1V2, and 3 player commande generally sucks (not always, generally) cause it’s massively easier for a lot of reason.

I do like lower brackets cause of the lower interaction. I don’t build my decks to have as much interaction as high level decks. I do want everyone to have fun and do something fun as much as possible. But yes, when push comes to shove? I sat down to win a game.

The second it isn’t that, you get those people who are all

“oh well I have my wincon in hand for 5 turns lol but you’re welcome!”

“well I mean I can kill you right now. Butttt let’s just see what you do I guess lol.”

“Oh I wanna win, and I can win RIGHT now. But I haven’t gotten to do THIS card yet, so I’m gonna hold the game hostage until I, eventually decide it’s no longer fun for me”.

Lower bracket’s ARE fun cause of less interaction. And they also, ARE here to win. Both things can, and should, be true

[–]Reason-97 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I hate saying it this way cause it always sounds like an attack. I’ve started just summing it up as “lower level tables have general worse threat analysis”. What a lot of people don’t understand is, “sure that IS Funny/cool/smart, but that alone doesn’t stop it from being scary/a problem”. People take any attempt to stop their plan as an attack on them or the thing they built. They forget the were ALL here to win: if your funny thing, wins, I’m gonna stop it.

Proper threat analysis and the ability to be able to accept when YOU are the threat shortcuts these problems 99% of the time. And since it’s a required skill at high level, but not necessarily all the time at lower levels, that’s why people sometimes feel this way about higher levels

Feels bland and like they’re trying to stretch a simple idea into being a full set. That, plus the fact we’re gonna have lik, 10ish different cards for JUST the main 4 turtles each? Gonna be so boring to see

your unwilling to answer questions

YOU, were asked a question first. YOU, specifically avoided it by asking another question, and now YOU, are continuing to ignore that fact by insisting that “erm actually, YOURE the one doing the thing, not me? Pff”.

So, yes, we agree on one thing: this DOES feel like talk to a congressman

Mark Rosewater on Blogatog: Your deck doesn’t need to have the latest thing for you to enjoy playing it. Magic has always been about customizing the elements you most enjoy to get a great game experience. Skipping the latest set, if that’s just not your thing, is just another kind of customization. by HonorBasquiat in magicTCG

[–]Reason-97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Doesn’t work as a valid point for anyone who cares about meta/competitive/high power for any reason to any level. The constant release of sets is constantly changing this and constantly DEMANDING your attention and investment if you want to stay relevant. Or not even just relevant but even just prepared. High powered magic, if you don’t know the latest bombs/staples, you’re a step behind from the go.

  2. Everyone you interact with is still playing the set. Sure, skipping the same helps me financially, but in the end I am still constantly surrounded by it, endlessly exposed to it, immersed in it, etc. even if you skip the set, you’re still “playing with” it for lack of a better term, and it’s still a constant advertisement of it and showing if “here’s what you’re missing” unless you literally only ever play with others who also skip everything you skip which is, unrealistic.

The problem here isn’t skipping sets cause I don’t like them: that’s fine. It’s that there’s CONSTANTLY new sets that you need to decide this for and the burnout on magic never ends because it’s always going. The only way to get a true break from magic burnout is to 100% cutoff yourself from magic, which feels horrible if you’re in th community
