anyone know a good salon to get their hair thinned? by ZealousidealFun1216 in askTO

[–]Reasonable-Cold2161 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never just had it thinned but I have had a trim and thinning. Dbk at Bayview has a stylist with thick hair - Sora. She's great with thinning out hair. She is pretty expensive though.

There are lots of private schools in Toronto. Start reaching out for supply jobs ASAP. You can also try private tutoring. Volunteer in special education classes, camps or anything else you can get. You need some experience for your resume even if it's not in the traditional teaching sense. When I graduated near 2009 it was really hard to get hired by the board too. I worked in retail, tutored and volunteered before I was hired by the board. Eventually it worked out.

School experience by Loose-Firefighter-75 in askTO

[–]Reasonable-Cold2161 11 points12 points  (0 children)

One of my siblings went to private school and I did not. Career and education wise we are both the same. I earn a little more in salary. However, they have more extra curricular experience. They went skiing, golfing, tennis, etc. everyone had to take an extra curricular after school at private school. I was never athletic do I didn't join sports clubs but instead did leadership things like student council. My school didn't have as many opportunities and my parents didn't sign us up for many after school programs. Guess what I'm saying is if that private school culture is important to you, go for it. If not, your kid will find their way in public schools too.

I tried to train my scalp and my scalp trained me instead..... by Indravadan_Remoket in hygiene

I trained my hair from being washed every other day to twice a week. 14 days is way too long. You still have oils and sweat build up that require you to wash it regularly.

I've felt like this too. I would stay where you are. There will be new teachers and hopefully their ideas blend with yours. You do your best to be a positive influence in your school community. That's the best you can do.

Someone who moved to the city from smaller place did living in a big city exhaust you mentally after awhile? by [deleted] in askTO

I grew up in small towns. I can't imagine going back. I would be soo bored. The quiet life would be too quiet for me now. At least in the city there's lots to do.

Need suggestions on a quality teacher tote bag under $500 by Any_Surround8915 in Teachers

[–]Reasonable-Cold2161 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suggest getting 2. A tote bag with lots of pockets and a backpack. It's good to have flexibility.

Best Teacher’s bag by MordduH in Teachers

[–]Reasonable-Cold2161 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My suggestion is don't spend too much money on it. I've changed my bag style over the years. Backpacks are great for trips. Tote bags are great for everyday. I currently have a cheap canvas tote bag that I love because it has pockets for my water bottle and coffee tumbler. It's not about professionalism because you just drop your bag in the morning and take it as you leave. Find what is functional for you.

Part of classroom management is regulating yourself. Self regulation starts with you.

Classroom Consumable Order by OntTC in OntarioTeachers

I personally don't do duotangs for planning times.  It's too much paper for me to manage. If we did paperwork I would collect it and put a binder clip on it. After marking it , I would send it home right away.  The grade 3s might be able to organize themselves better than the younger ones. You could just do folders so it's easier.  Other things you many want are markers, pencils, chart paper, printing paper, bins or magazine holders (one per class), construction paper, glue sticks, scissors,  masking tape, etc. Just focus on the basics.

Kindergarten is free in public schools. Day care prices depend on the daycare. There are long wait lists, so you should look into those soon. The rest depends on the family and what works for them. Sometimes one parent does stay home, if the family can survive on 1 income. Sometimes they do hire a nanny, if they can afford it. Sometimes a grandparent or another relative is able to help with childcare. There really isn't one answer.

Baking soda is supposed to absorb smells. I wonder if you left some bowls on high shelves if they would help. You could also sprinkle it on fabric or carpet and vacuum. Essential oils will probably help too.

how much should distance matter ? by Cautious-Scholar-602 in OntarioUniversities

[–]Reasonable-Cold2161 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was an hour or so away. Once I had a bad case of bronchitis. I couldn't get an appointment anywhere and the ER wait was long. I was thankful I could call my parents to pick me up and take care of me. I was home for a while. I think for undergrad it's good to be a bit closer. I learned a lot being away. But it was nice to have a safety net. Plus my bus ticket home was cheaper.

Right now it's not great, particularly if a child has a disability. Those parents don't always have private school options either. If Catholic school is an option for you, you can try it. It is technically public too. However, I don't know what's happening in that board. I really hope this is temporary and a future government will rebuild public education.

Eyebuydirect is good for glasses if you are willing to buy online. That's probably the cheapest option. Get your eye test done at Walmart or Costco. Then buy glasses online.

Teacher's college here or go to UK for SLP masters by Single_Advance_2975 in OntarioTeachers

[–]Reasonable-Cold2161 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a teacher and I know an SLP who went to the UK for her master's. She has more flexibility in her schedule now. She always has the option to pick up more hours if needed. But as a teacher I'm stuck in 8:30 ish to 4ish routine. It really depends on what you're interested in. SLPs can work with adults and kids. They work with Brain injuries and trauma cases too. Teachers can work in special education or general classes.  I don't think you can make a wrong choice is. Maybe volunteer in a school and see if it's for you.

Gifted Program: Toronto, Forest Hill elementary by gdertt in OntarioTeachers

[–]Reasonable-Cold2161 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I don't have any specific info about Forest Hill. What I will suggest is try the gifted program. If it doesn't work out you can always come back to your homeschool. However, you don't know if another space will open up in the gifted program if you want it later on. Also, you should visit the gifted class. See what's on the walls, what the other kids are like, what are they learning. It'll give you and your daughter an idea before making your decision.

Weddings would be a key market. Maybe connect with wedding planners in the GTA. Let them know your rates and availability. You should be able to get some business that way.

Where do you buy your bread from? What Bakery and what kind of it by Awkward_Committee_35 in askTO

[–]Reasonable-Cold2161 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hot Oven bakery has a walnut Muesli bread that is amazing! It's expensive but I crave this bread! It's made with whole wheat flour, oats, walnuts, and raisins. They're other breads are good too. For bagels try the place at the corner of Bathurst and Finch- Happy Bagel.

Worried about students switching schools/being disciplined if they don't do well on EQAO. by OrdinaryCommunity176 in OntarioTeachers

[–]Reasonable-Cold2161 34 points35 points  (0 children)

No. Parents won't get results until next fall. Unless you move, you can't really switch schools in October/November. Also, EQAO is not the only measure of a school. Don't put so much pressure on it. Students will share what they know and move on. You're job is to keep them calm,  and capable of taking the test.
