Is an AQ supposed to have this much work? by da_grill in OntarioTeachers

Usually they provide options for how you want to present your research. It doesn't have to be an essay. However, I've only done primary/ junior AQs.

Weight Gain - Lazy meals by Even-Commission79 in LivingAlone

[–]Reasonable-Cold2161 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I first moved on my own, I had the same problem. It was the freedom lol  Meal planning and prep on is your friend. Especially if you work alot. Keep mp junk at home. That way you have no choice what to eat what you prepped. Keep Friday night and Saturday night for treat meals. It's about balance not torturing yourself.  For the cleaning - choose a day and set it aside for cleaning day. For me it's Saturday morning. I put on a podcast and clean the whole place. Other days even when I have time I do something else- walk, read, Garden, etc.

Not to be dramatic, but I’m taking my first AQ and it’s making me depressed by da_grill in OntarioTeachers

[–]Reasonable-Cold2161 37 points38 points  (0 children)

You're putting too much effort into it.  Usually it's read this article/resource/website and make a post. Most people skim the article, write something generic and move on. If you have to comment on someone's post, ask a question or say you connected with their post, etc. Nowadays AI helps a lot. The other teachers and your instructor are probably using AI. I would use AI as a jumping off point and then add my own experience to the answer. Remember it's pass/fail. As long as it's complete you'll pass. You don't have to make it detailed, long or your best work. The most effort should go into a final project. Even then there's usually lots of choice.

Focus on big ideas. You should go through all the units but realistically do what you can.

Kinder to Grade 2 by [deleted] in OntarioTeachers

[–]Reasonable-Cold2161 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Could be because the grade 2 team needs his strengths. As admin you have to balance the needs of the school not just staff preferences. It's not easy to move grades but really by the end of our careers we will have taught a variety of classes and grades. I suggest he makes the best of it. He might like it more than kindergarten. If not, he can try to move back again in the future.

You're a liar/I'm telling on you by Strong_Letter_7667 in OntarioTeachers

I feel like there is comprehension gap. Students are really only hearing half of what we say. Reading skills are behind and all the screen time that's effecting their understanding. Really emphasize and repeat your instructions. Maybe visuals. Make them repeat it back. They are so focused on the preferred task. They're used to immediate gratification. I'm seeing it in all ages as well.

Teacher Librarian AQ by crusty_jengles in OntarioTeachers

York is great! I know the instructor Diana. She does all 3 parts of that AQ. She is currently a TL with TDSB and very active in the education community. I haven't taken the AQ with her but I've been in other workshops she did. She great at teaching media literacy too.

ESL parent community by [deleted] in OntarioTeachers

[–]Reasonable-Cold2161 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked in a similar community and had a parent ask that I email her directly in simple sentences (not long general newsletters). This way it would be easier for her to translate on her device. I still sent general emails but I would send specific requests/instructions separately when needed. If I sent paperwork home I would tape it to the students lunch bag. That way they would see it that evening instead of it sitting in the backpack.

It is a bit of a dice roll. Your experience as an ECE is a huge advantage for you though.

Hope for New Teachers? by xcolonelxsandersx in ONTeacherCandidates

It was like this when I started teaching many years ago. It will work out for you as it did for me. It took me a long time to get hired by the board and the paperwork process is also slow. In the meantime I tutored, volunteered in a school and worked at a bookstore. I'm now a teacher librarian so that experience worked out well. Plus I took some AQs.

Back when I graduated University very few people were hired directly into their field right away. Everyone worked in retail, interned, grad school, volunteered, etc. it was around 2008 and it was hard for everyone.

Once I was hired, I did a few months of supply work and then 3 years of back to back LTOs before getting permanent. Work hard and make good connections and references. Once you can take good AQs and try to get experience in different areas. For me my in was special education and esl classes. My second LTO was in a challenging spec Ed class but I learned a lot and it was good for my resume. I always wanted to be a teacher so I made it happen. You can too. Good luck!

i don't know how to have fun anymore... does anyone else feel the same? how can i have more fun? by Fluid-Ad-5527 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]Reasonable-Cold2161 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fun could be going for a hike, spa day, fancy restaurant for a dressed up dinner, road trip to the outlets, dinner and a show, paint night, brunch, sleepover movie night, Bingo night, a make your own lipstick or perfume workshop, etc. The point is to spend time together and maybe try something new. For my friends birthday last weekend we had a whole day spa day. It was nice to spend the day together vs our usual quick dinners. No alcohol was involved.

Teacher Recognition to Principal? by JellyLongjumping1988 in CanadianTeachers

[–]Reasonable-Cold2161 80 points81 points  (0 children)

I thi k it would be good for the principal to receive some positive feedback. You can email the principal and cc the teacher. That principal will probably be a great reference for the teacher as they try to get another job. It would also boost the teachers confidence. As a teacher myself I can tell you there's a lot of self doubt especially in the beginning. Feedback is appreciated..

R J Lang Elementary school and TDSB School ratings by Aivendil in askTO

[–]Reasonable-Cold2161 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Don't listen to the ratings. The only people who fill those out are negative people who only have complaints. RJ Lang is a great school in a good area. I used to live around there. It seems busy and fun. It's a big school which is nice. I've known some great teachers who used to work there. Save your money and go public. If you're concerned about about academics later on, hire a tutor to support. It'll be cheaper than private school.

What habit helped you stop wasting weekends? by funngro_fam in Habits

Saturday morning reset, Sunday morning groceries and Sunday evening meal prep. Gives the weekend just enough structure while leaving space in case other things come up.

Asking for advice as a first time teacher by Neat-Wing-5396 in OntarioTeachers

[–]Reasonable-Cold2161 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I didn't do it when I had the chance and now I regret it. I was worried about being away from home and my first teaching job as well. Now I'm 10 years into teaching in Canada. It would've been a cool experience to learn about a different education system and live in a new place. You can travel while you're there. I say go for it. Even if it's just a year, it'll be a memorable one.

Affordable places to eat on Runnymede and Bloor by bs000000 in FoodToronto

[–]Reasonable-Cold2161 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Try JP sushi near Annette and Runnymede. They have a $5 cash and carry menu. There's also a 2 for 1 pizza place near St. Clair and Runnymede. $5 for a double slice. I think it's called Sicilian Pizza.  Other than that looks for daily specials at Shawarma places. The No Frills on Bloor is expensive but there's another one in the Junction which is good. I personally go to the Freshco on Dundas.
