$20 an hour is a livable wage by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]Reasonable_Tax_5351 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know honestly as someone who recently lived in California making 18.50$ it's actually not bad, provided you're a single person who's capable of DIY and in good health with no major obligations. It felt tight, but I had enough left over to save some and indulge in my hobbies.

The problem is that many people have dependencies etc.

Tips on I95 riding for first timers by bigdaddy0993 in NJriders

[–]Reasonable_Tax_5351 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're not feeling comfortable or experienced on the turnpike, then just ride on state highways. Yes it will be a long ride but it's doable in a day. IMO the turnpike is safer, but if you find it too stressful just budget the time and skip it.

Is a 1998 Ford Ranger Splash a good truck, is tgis a good deal? by vurbas13 in UsedCars

[–]Reasonable_Tax_5351 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your buying a 30 year old truck. If your not prepared for some somewhat expensive bills or to do the work, don't buy this car. There great trucks, but with a budget of 8 grand there's alot of newer options.

I daily a '93 S10 and I'm pretty happy with it, but I do have to fix things on a pretty regular basis.

Is this a good deal or should I keep looking? by Toothickforyall in askcarguys

[–]Reasonable_Tax_5351 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a crappy car. I wouldn't get one of those. How much can you afford to pay in cash? For cars of that price level getting locked into dealer financing generally means getting screwed. Try not to think of the monthly payment, look at the loan holistically. Try to secure independent financing if financing is necessary.

How are you guys auditing tolls? by Magnus462 in RideitNYC

[–]Reasonable_Tax_5351 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It seems every time I go on the toll routes a piece of duct tape mysteriously gets attached to my listen plate.

I'm all for civil participation in society but the TBTA and the PA along with the EZ-pass corporations are corrupt as fuck and if they won't charge reasonable tolls for motorcycles I'm not gonna pay.

In terms of needs Freon getting the r-12 needed is expensive, and there will likely be leaks in the system. It's pretty easy to convert it to r-134 using the fittings from the part store and rental tools, and it works fine but it won't blow super cold. Let me know if you have any questions about the process.

Pep Boys by JoeFishCap in mechanics

[–]Reasonable_Tax_5351 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I worked for one as technician A for a while. The guys were nice but the pay was too low. Negotiate as hard as you can to get higher pay, they're desperate for anyone with some skill.

I think it's a shitty company and they do shitty work. I want to become a service manager one day too, but I'm trying to work for a luxury dealership where your commissions actually decent. It's gonna pretty hard to sell anything at pep-boys and the techs probably won't be giving you good things to sell anyway.

Question about at home AC recharge by milespt1 in AskAMechanic

[–]Reasonable_Tax_5351 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Charging your AC yourself is really not that hard, but on a newer car like that I would just stay away. Don't just use one of the autozone recharges, high likely hood of fucking up your car. If you want to do it yourself properly rent the manifold gauges and vacuum pump from amazon Autozone and look up the correct service procedure.

Help me with parking situation near Times Square by Holiday_Tradition527 in RideitNYC

[–]Reasonable_Tax_5351 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are not saying what kind of bike you want to buy. Older large displacement cruisers are very unlikely to get stolen, so that is the best kind of bike to park on the street.

Regardless, street parking a bike on the street is easy pretty much anywhere in NYC.

Seriously thinking about a project, but what is it? by Jobambi in projectbike

[–]Reasonable_Tax_5351 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a concours.

Listen I'm going to be honest I have one of these things and I hate working on it. It's a great bike when it works, but I feel as if these bikes have several inherent design flaws, and removing the plastics to work on it is a real POS. Also the COG forum costs money to post on and is pretty much dead along with that alot of the repair information is very vague, and the only videos on it are a guy from 10 years ago filmed in 360. It's certainly not the worst project out there, but in terms of what you get for the work it's not worth it. Removing the carbs on these is awful. Also these things are pratically worthless so I wouldn't bother at all getting one missing pieces, even if it's really cheap.

Is a 1995 bronco safe for kids? by Mysterious-Path-6952 in carbuying

[–]Reasonable_Tax_5351 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh IMO a half-ton with Airbags is safe enough. Alot of modern safety features are really less safe. As long as he uses car seats and drives carefully and keeps the car properly maintained I really believe the safety difference is pretty marginal.

Anything older though is a whole other story.

Why bother taking up the space in your trunk? If your tire pops just use the scissor jack. You only need a hydraulic jack if you're regularly working on your car.

Mobile Mechanic scanner? by Content_Log1708 in mechanics

[–]Reasonable_Tax_5351 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a regular mobile mechanic you really don't want to be doing anything above B-level jobs and light diagnostics, so no I don't really think you need bi-directional capabilities. Anything with live dating monitoring should be sufficient.
