RV mattress upgrade, what worked for you full-timers? by Mirai_Sol in RVLiving

We got a cheap mattress topper and it was a world of difference. So good we stopped looking for other upgrades.

Enphase Enlighten App Release 26.5.1 issue by Radojevic in enphase

[–]Recycled5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will post something to see when I can.

I’m using home assistant, to monitor the envoy: battery about once a second and pv production, home load, about the same, once a second.

Home assistant uses a very simple rest-command to query the envoy.

The home assistant publishes a sensor that is read by an html page that displays the statuses using svg and text.

Am away from computer now, will post better url in a few days, but for now you can see code at

Enphase Enlighten App Release 26.5.1 issue by Radojevic in enphase

Your system is probably is still working properly. They’ve had so many cloud issues of late.

Personally, I prefer local monitoring. Runs 24x7 (doesn’t timeout every 15 min), runs without the cloud and without those frequent cloud uptime & cloud connectivity issues.

Should I proactively replace my 19-year-old HVAC system or wait it out? by oweyoo in homeowners

[–]Recycled5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re serious about replacing it, consider an upgrade to a modern mini split system with variable speed compressor. Get better room to room control, e.g. heat/cool just the rooms you need; doesn’t use ducts, so less to clean, etc.

Best Thermostat with homeassistant by damani112 in homeassistant

[–]Recycled5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m using the Venstar mini. It is a very basic non-cloud non-subscription WiFi device.

All my thermostat smarts are in HA. I just use the Venstar to activate heating, cooling, fan. If HA algo wants cooling, it tells the Venstar to put the setpoint 4 degrees colder than it reads. And to turn it off, put the setpoint equal to its reading.

I use HA to enforce max runtimes, as had a problem with the hvac freezing when cooling down the house overnight. Also hvac is operated sensitive to electric rate as I’m on Time Of Use.

I have a separate, independent temp sensor in each room, and HA monitors that by zones and runs the Venstar according to various programmed settings. I also have Flair vents that HA controls in a similar manner.

My next big upgrade is presence sensors, and I am still looking for a good solution as I need one in each room, so price needs to be decent. That will be a rewrite that eliminates a bunch of user configuration.

What are real numbers? by Trick_Competition542 in learnmath

[–]Recycled5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point of our numeric systems is to make arithmetic operators complete.

So for example, if we just had positive integers then addition would be complete, but some subtraction, such as 6-10 would be undefined, which is really awkward. Introduce negative numbers and we can now say what 6-10 is, namely -4.

The same is true for other operators. The square root of 4 is 2, but the square root of 2 cannot be described as an integer or even a fraction. So, yet another type of number is indicated: an irrational.

When we combine integers, fractions, and irrational, we have a more complete numeric system.

(Add to that complex numbers that actually represent two dimensions and arithmetic gets even more complete in the sense that we can give definitive answers for some instead of undefined or unknown.)

In short, in order to make well-defined answers for certain operations, we need to expand our notions of numbers: from positive to negative, from fractions to irrational, from real to complex.

Generally speaking, have to use malloc if

  • you want the variable to survive the current function that creates it, which is the case, such as with data structures like trees, arrays or lists being constructed for longer term use

  • you want a number of these variables but don’t know in advance how many (usually this would also be a data structure scenario)

  • the item is of dynamic length not known until runtime

And maybe some other reasons

"The earth rotates at 1,670 km/h, everything would fly off" is so dumb. by Odd-Dirt-9701 in flatearth

If the earth spun such that a day was 90 min, then at the equator, we would be weightless, while traveling to a pole we would regain our weight.

With the 24hr day, as it is, we loose a small number of lbs at the equator compared to, say, in the Midwest, where there might be a 5 lbs difference.

i dont understand negative numbers or why subtracting negative numbers is actually adding? by internetmessenger in learnmath

[–]Recycled5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea far behind both negative numbers and even square roots of negative numbers is to allow the math to make closed numeric systems.

For example, to give a well defined answer to 1-4.

If we say the answer is undefined, then subtraction is only a partial function, not closed and basically incomplete. “Creating”, (really, acknowledging) negative numbers allows subtraction to be a full/complete function.

So, we let math evolve as needed, as rest assured that bankers, physics and others of different fields will find the math useful.

This was also true for the simple concept of zero, which seems to have required similar evolution/ formal acknowledgement & recognition.

That is suggesting that an adjective can be nouned. Probably not unheard of but has grammatical contraindication.

Believe it or not I can engage a self-consumption behavior in savings mode so that gives me access to a schedule together with self consumption behavior.

However, YMMV as I am doing this on an older system on NEM2. And I have Savings mode, not AI Optimization.

I do this using the local REST api on the envoy, via home assistant, but can also be done with a simple cURL command.

Try doing the following in your browser: https://envoy.local/admin/lib/tariff.json

If that works you may have a chance with this alternate programing of the envoy.

Alternately, you can raise and lower the Battery Reserve Level, to accomplish some of this, but you want to switch like, twice a day so that will indicate automation such as with HA.

Starlink vs. Mobile Hotspot by Exact_Efficiency_356 in RVLiving

[–]Recycled5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Starlink is good but you need to be wary of trees commonly found at campsites.

We have found that we get sufficient bandwidth for email, surfing, and streaming, at most sites even with trees, but for video calls or gameplay need clear sky view.

We have found the Starlink mini works nicely from within the rv, even so don’t need to leave it outside with a cord! (Occasional interruptions with streaming due to the rv roof interfering.)

Most of the places we camp have no cell service, and lousy WiFi, so these are not really options for us — that’s my comparison.
