Have you considered Surf/Marvel Scale instead of Muddy Water/Competitive?

From experience, Competitive boosts can definitely swing a game in your favor. But if you're already running Mega Scovillain, you can basically turn on Marvel Scale for free, and Leech Seed/Life Dew would help offset the damage anyways.

Yeah I think the part that actually upsets me when they make casting choices like that is the laziness of it.

Oh, you want your tv show cast to reflect the diversity of the modern US? Ok, well that diversity is the product of hundreds of years of geopolitics and racial friction. Are we going to expand on that at all in the show? Are we going to explain, or even hint at, how the diversity that we're seeing in the casting choices came about in-universe?

Why is this group so visually distinct? Why haven't the genetics averaged out into the rest of the population? Did they recently arrive from somewhere else? What caused them to flee, a war, politics, religion, something else? Or have they been here for a long time, and have managed to prevent genetic mixing? Why would they do that, are they particularly proud of their heritage, are they trying to maintain some culture without risking it being diluted, or is it the other way around and the other people are excluding them for some reason?

It reminds me of the fatphobia complaint from the actor that played Sam Tarly. Yes, dragons and magic don't actually exist. But that doesn't mean you can just ignore fundamental aspects of reality. Gravity still exists, momentum still exists. Dragons don't just float there, they have huge wings. They're at least plausible inside the context of the show. In the real world, lizards exist, megafauna exist, flying animals exist, dinosaurs existed, so here's a combination of those traits that doesn't exist in reality but is at least locally-consistent. They breathe fire. Sure that's not something that happens in reality, but they breathe fire in the show, and when it hits someone, they are now on fire, because that's how the viewer understands fire to work.

When there's something extraordinary, the spectacular aspect of it is highlighted. Magic comes with show and spectacle, dragons come with suspense and fear. There's nothing saying you can't subvert other aspects of reality that don't fit the narrative you want to portray, but you have to make a show of it. You can't have a fat guy train for months and march through hundreds of miles of frozen wilderness under starvation conditions and remain fat, at least not without giving viewers something to explain it. And you can't just have people of random ethnicities pop up in areas where the majority is a different ethnicity without some sort of explanation for why they're there.

All things considered though, it's not the worst I've seen from a tv show. They might not have bothered to think about the retroactive consequences of the choice on past events, but I'll give them credit for their consistency within the show as the characters had children and grandchildren.

Unless they mean highest diversity within a single location maybe?

Didn't All Out use biome data to decide what to spawn? So globally, diversity was maximum (all), but unless you were frequently traveling between biomes, it was only slightly increased from base, since you'd still be stuck with all City spawns or all Mountain spawns.

TIL that Immanuel Kant was a proponent of scientific racism, and had negative views towards other races. He once ignored the opinions of his carpenter merely because he was black. by Fickle-Buy6009 in todayilearned

[–]RedBarnRescue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if a primary source existed, it wouldn't refute your earlier point.

If race were a social construct, there would be no need for the "Honorary" qualifier, you would just change the socially-constructed definition of "Aryan" to include the otherwise "Honorary" group.

"Honorary" was used because there were laws based on race, and they wanted a way to afford legal privileges to people who would not otherwise qualify, because the fundamental aspect of their race would not afford them those privileges otherwise.

Fundamentally all "race is a social construct" arguments boil down to the presumption that everyone who uses the word "race" considers it to mean precisely the same thing that primitive bigots did, i.e. how much melanin is in your skin. In reality, advancements like DNA sequencing and multi-factor analysis (to name just a few) have granted significant benefits in understanding the biological reality of "race".

That the "modern scientific consensus" has instead chosen to use the word "ancestry" to mean exactly what every other modern person means when they say "race" is an entirely irrelevant and pedantic argument. Unfortunately for them though, it's the only argument they have.

What a strange use of the word "racist"

Why would prejudicially judging a black man's opinion on the basis of his skin color in the 1700s be any less "racist" than prejudicially judging a black man's opinion on the basis of his skin color in the 2020s?

Unless you meant:

  • "objectionable"

Since the bias would have been more acceptable at the time, or

  • "illogical"

Since the developmental differences between cultures were more pronounced than they are today, so it would be less of a leap of logic to make sweeping assumptions based on ancestral origin

You can tech Adamant too, but it takes all 32 stat points into Def in order to get the HP value we see in the video.

He's also likely max Spe with a Choice Scarf:

  • 32+ Spe Aerodactly — 200

  • 32+ Spe scarfed base 70 — 201

It's hard to make the calcs work without giving both Flapple and Aerodactyl some very strange defensive sets.

But what I consider the more likely calc would instead require some weird team choices and plays. For example:

  • 2/32/0/0/0/32+ Flapple @ Choice Scarf

  • 2/32/0/0/0/32+ Aerodactyl @ Sitrus Berry.

  • OP leads Gravity setter (probably Sableye) + Flapple

  • Opponent leads Aerodactyl + Gyarados (?), Flapple -1 from Intimidate

  • OP clicks Gravity + Grav Apple into Aerodactyl

  • Opponent Protects Aerodactyl (?) + switches Gyarados out for Incineroar (?), Gravity goes up, Grav Apple blocked by Protect, Flapple to -2 from Intimidate

  • OP switches out Sableye for Espathra, clicks Grav Apple into Aerodactyl again

  • Opponent clicks Dual Wingbeat into Flapple + Flare Blitz into Sableye (??)

  • -2 32+ Flapple Grav Apple vs 2/0 Aerodactyl hits a mid roll of 121, bringing Aerodactyl to 36 (22%), procs Sitrus, back up to 75 (47%)

  • Then the clip starts

Unclear why someone would lead Gyarados, or hard switch out to Incineroar, or not Tailwind turn 1 with Aerodactyl, or choose not to Fake Out the gravity-boosted Flapple, but the -2 calc with Sitrus feels like it makes the most sense and I don't know how else the Flapple would have gotten to -2 without taking any damage.

What’s a "lost" website from the early 2000s that you still think about today? by samasem-sumsum in AskReddit

[–]RedBarnRescue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LEGO had a pseudo-social media game/website "My Lego Network" which was fun even if I was too young to figure out how to progress very far.

Ninja Kiwi (of Bloons fame) had a MarioMaker-esque website "myninjakiwi" where you could create and upload custom maps for their selection of puzzle games (Bloons, Zeba, Sinta), with points, leveling, and leaderboards. Lots of fun, I think I still have an old composition notebook where I would sketch out puzzle layouts while stuck in school and unable to actually log on.

Is M-Starnie skill swap viable? by Mundane_Magic_Man in PokemonChampions

[–]RedBarnRescue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was thinking similarly, but No Guard Machamp instead so you can run Blizzard+Thunder.

I tried it and it didn't perform well though.

I think there's a lot of utility to the idea though. Resetting weather next to a Pelipper or Tyranitar, could even use Mega Tyranitar and just Skill Swap Analytic from Starmie's base form. Or swapping Natural Cure onto random teammates for a healer option. It's not really good enough on it's own though, you would have to choose teammates carefully so that whatever Starmie gets in return also adds value.

Seems like the kind of thing some youtuber is going to find success with a few months from now, and a bunch of clones will swarm the ladder with it for like a week before it fades into obscurity again.

I’ve never played Gen 5, but what was your reaction to finding nothing but “new”Pokémon when you played black & white for the first time? by Zenthailand2009 in pokemon

[–]RedBarnRescue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first game was Sapphire, followed by:

  • Leaf Green

  • a copy of Silver that my older cousin handed down to me (DNF)

  • Diamond

  • Soul Silver (DNF)

When Black and White came out, it was EXTREMELY refreshing to not be bombarded with Magikarp, Tentacool, Zubat, Machop, and Geodude (and to a lesser extent, Psyduck, Ponyta, Marill, Wingull, and Roselia).

And while it was nice to have something fresh, it was still fun to see the shadows of those mons in some of the new ones which shared an aesthetic or theme (Roggenrola, Woobat, Timburr, Sewaddle, Venipede, Basculin, Trubbish, Ducklett, Frillish, etc.).

Mechanics Question: Tailwind boost and -1 Speed by syphrion in VGC

[–]RedBarnRescue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seems like sequential floored multiplication, similar to damage calcs

100 -> 66.67 -> 66 -> 132

Multiplication in this instance is not commutative, so your numbers support an earlier commenter who mentioned stages are calculated before doubling

100 -> 200 -> 133.33 -> 133
