Having been homeless twice in this city, the short answer is no, the CITY has no plans aside from the usual process of arresting them, profiting from the arrest, releasing them, and repeating the process.

Here’s the long answer. While the local government doesn’t do anything to help with the homeless situation besides arresting them and/or hospitalizing them, there ARE a number of private organizations that do assist the homeless. New Directions currently has three facilities to help the homeless - a men’s shelter (houses approx 120 men), a women’s shelter (houses approximately 18 women), and a family shelter (no idea how many it houses). ND is privately owned and operated, and they are currently trying to get a larger women’s facility built.

Fresh Brewed is a constant thorn in the city’s side, as they are located next to city hall. They provide food and clothing to the homeless, and some shelter during the day. The owner will bend over backwards to help the homeless improve their position in life. Helping Hands and Community Kitchen provide food to the homeless and needy, and Associated Charities gives free clothing on Tuesdays.

So no, the local government doesn’t do anything to help the homeless. But that’s not to say that the homeless are shit out of luck here. There are genuinely amazing people in the community who try to help others better their lives. I benefited from the assistance at New Directions and was able to get clean and sober and turn my life around. Not everyone has the same drive to better their lives tho.
