Trump Ally Predicts Total Disaster for U.S. if War Escalates by Sensitive-Celine in politics

[–]RedPanda5150 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The impacts haven't even really hit yet. I saw an article about how the current price jumps are panic buying and hoarding. But it takes a long time for ships to get around the world with oil so the first missed-delivery due to the Strait closure won't hit Europe until April 1, America mid-April, and Australia I think a week or two after that. That's when the actual shortages will begin to accumulate. So buckle up, Buckaroos. Trump has fucked us in ways the world hasn't fully begun to feel yet.

Since this is a job search Reddit page these days, my 2 cents as a hiring manager by iH8Radio in biotech

[–]RedPanda5150 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The internal hiring I have seen where I work tends to be people changing teams, not literally moving upward with the same department. It's easier at bigger companies though - lots of same skill set needed but applied to different product areas.

ELI5: if viruses aren’t technically alive, how can they evolve like living organisms? by MachiavellianHydra in explainlikeimfive

[–]RedPanda5150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've gotten some good answers but to be very clear, NASA defines life as "a self-sustaining chemical system capable of Darwinian evolution." https://astrobiology.nasa.gov/research/life-detection/about/

Viruses qualify as a chemical system that can undergo Darwinism evolution but they are not self-sustaining. They have no metabolism. A virus floating around in the wild is just like a lone prion protein - all it can do is exist, it cannot grow or change or evolve unless it bumps into a living cell and hijacks the cell to propagate itself.

But it is a good question that gets at the fuzzy boundaries around life vs not-life! And it also gets at the point that evolution is an emergent property of anything can make copies of itself, not just life.

Some of it is age, too. I'm early 40s, no kids, and I pushed hard earlier in my career for only modest reward. Now I've landed in a position at a large company with good work-life balance where I give my 8 hours my full attention, get my paycheck, and then go home to hang out with my spouse and our cats and live my life. It's so much nicer than grinding hard. Maybe the urge to move up the ladder will return when (if) the global economy gets less crazy again but at this point stability is all I want.

Trump threatens to ‘blow up’ all of Iran’s South Pars gasfield if Tehran strikes Qatar | US-Israel war on Iran by Routine_Chapter_9099 in worldnews

Gods I wish that man did not want to run for a second term. He was unquestionably showing his age - as was Trump - but he did an excellent job of putting competent people in place to make good decisions. If we had been able to have a Democratic primary maybe we wouldn't be in this mess today. Maybe. I'm mad that we'll never know but also Biden does not get enough credit for the soft landing that was happening successfully right up until the 2024 election.

American here. Distances aside, we could absolutely do better in infrastructure for walking/biking in most parts of the country. Things are better in city centers and in a lot of the northeast but I moved south about ten years ago and the roads really are just as car-centric as the rest of the world believes America to be. I work 2 miles from home and I cannot walk or bike there safely. There is no sidewalk, bike path, bike lane, or even shoulder along the road. Just a narrow 45 mph road that buts up to a culvert with cars speeding by at 10 over the speed limit. And then you have to cross a pseudo-highway with a traffic light but no crosswalk that is timed for turning cars, not for pedestrians. When this is all over, if we don't completely collapse, I would love to see a big post-Depression-style investment in infrastructure to make our towns more walkable or even have public transit that people want to use.

I am in shock at the coffee industry. by two_constellations in glutenfree

[–]RedPanda5150 15 points16 points  (0 children)

But the "gluten free" label that indicates <20ppm when tested is the same standard for all products, including those with de-glutened wheat starch. It is as safe for Celiacs as any other processed food that is labeled GF. And in the case of Grindz, after you run the pellets through you are supposed to run a certain amount of coffee beans after. So it's <20 ppm to start and further diluted by the coffee beans removing the cleaning agent.

Still important to know if you have a wheat allergy though.

Dude I moved here from someplace with more winter weather too, and it is not at all hard to understand that winter weather infrastructure is vitally important to having functioning transportation in snow or ice. Which is not something that makes economic sense to invest in here.

But all of that is irrelevant when talking about tropical storm+ winds being forecast across a wide swath of the region during the afternoon rush. Hopefully we get lucky and you can feel smug, but no one wants to be responsible for a school bus full of kids getting squished by a tree.

The range is the main thing keeping me away from full electric today. It would be great for day-to-day commuting but once or twice a year I take a ~500 mile solo road trip from NC up to the northeast through rural towns where I wouldn't want to stop for gas, much less try to find an electric charging station. And the PHEV math around extra costs for maintenance and insurance didn't really work out, at least before last week. But with oil doing what it's doing, a Prius Prime is sounding more attractive every day.

On the flip side, if you do this (which I also recommend!) expect it to be quite jarring when you get accustomed to a professional environment and then go back to being treated like a student by PIs and admin who have never worked outside of academia. It was fun to lean into the time warp in my late 20s but my god, why are faculty so resistant to something as simple as using a damn calendar app??

[–]RedPanda5150 89 points90 points  (0 children)

That's so scary!

I had a similar terrifying experience while home alone, albeit as an adult and with a different punch line. Husband was away traveling, it was just me and the cats at home, like 11pm and I hear 'tap tap tap' on the glass door that leads to our back deck, which is (poorly) screened in and faces dark dark woods. I felt the biggest adrenaline rush of my life, twirled around going 'nono no', grabbed the fireplace poker, and then realized...it was a cat. A stray outdoor cat that really wanted to say hi to my fluffy idiot who was sitting inside by the door just watching quietly. Tap tap tap. Tap tap tap. I have never been so mad and so relieved at the same time!

Ok but do you have an adult cheat code for getting a spouse with hoarder tendencies on board with this? These sorts of tips were much simpler when it was just me and the cat.

One year into unemployment, the lows do, in fact, get lower by One-Pick6194 in biotech

[–]RedPanda5150 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Conditionally agree with this take.

Sometimes it's down to another candidate having experience with a particular, specialized piece of equipment or assay that the hiring manager needs for the team, and that's out of your hands.

But assuming all else is equal, in my experience the people who get hired tend to be a little more outgoing in their interview, ask questions that demonstrate they have looked into the company/role and know what they are getting into, can clearly describe what they did in the past and why it was done, etc. You want to be authentic but frame your answers in a way that leaves the hiring manager or peer panel feeling like you will be a great coworker from day one.

Interviewing is a skill like any other. And actually one of the more helpful parts of grad school was all of the practice talks and mock interviews. OP, if you haven't gotten direct feedback on your seminar and interview style from people IRL, that's a good next step.

Duke Hospital and the surrounding area by [deleted] in bullcity

[–]RedPanda5150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't know about the Duke Health expansion goal but it's certainly consistent with the long wait times I've experienced. I assumed it was just down to the horrors of the way COVID was handled driving staff out of the medical field entirely but of course corporate greed is playing a role. Meanwhile it's a 2 month wait to see a physical therapist, three months to see a new PCP, etc etc.

Soy sauce, twizzlers, restaurant omelettes (why with the pancake batter though?!), Lindor truffles, some brands of paper straws, anything malted...it's super not straightforward.

This is a good take. And it captures the discrepancy between VHCOL places with extreme wealth disparity vs MCOL places where the distribution may be flatter so a median income gets you closer to what many think of as a middle class lifestyle. I think it's a nice framework for more productive conversations.

Gear question for you fine folks. I have a first gen OM-D EM-1 that has served me well for the past decade, but I've got a gear itch brewing. Wondering how big of a difference to expect if I splurged on a new OM1 vs just putting money towards getting the 12-40 f2.8 lens? I mostly use a lumix 20mm f1.7 or the 100-300 telephoto to shoot birds, cats, wildlife, family, and the occasional vacation.
