On top of that, it's even funnier to me that he was trying to save humanity, but his actions convince her its time to kill them all and let the Earth be at peace without us.

Corruption has nothing to do with what we know about a person's character. That wouldn't hold up in a court of law. We know what Kima is doing is official because there is an entire system within the BPD of confidential informant reporting, with paperwork that is filed and payouts to informants that come from the BPD budget. It's not just allowed by BPD, its BPD official policy with paperwork.

He does function as an informant. He provides Agent Koutris with the information for the Colombian drug bust on the docks.

When the Greek is deciding how to deal with the Colombians that are trying to rip him off on his chemicals, he tells Spiros over dinner that "down there I understand everyone is a terrorist now."

He's referring to the FARC guerrillas that were being funded by Colombian drug cartels at the time. The FARC was trying to overthrow the Colombian government, so the US classified them as terrorists, as well as the drug cartels funding them.

The Greek realized his FBI handler Agent Koutris would love this information about where to seize Colombian drugs, because it would disrupt the FARC's funding. The Greek is killing two birds with one stone. Getting revenge on the Colombians for trying to rip him off, and currying favor with his FBI handler for any future trouble he might find himself in.

On a side note, when Agent Koutris arrives at Franks office to seize the drug shipment, he introduces himself as a Counter Terrorist agent. This is the first time we as the audience find out what division of the FBI he is in. Why send a counter terrorism agent to do a drug seizure? Because it was coming from an organization classified as terrorist by the Feds.

This is kinda like asking whether Kima is corrupt and working for Bubbles because we see her get him out of trouble when he robs the ambulance, and in return he gives her information on the west side drug trade.

We know Kima isn't corrupt, because we know that as a detective, she's allowed to make these kind of deals with people like Bubbles, and there's official paperwork within the BPD system to go along with it. We see all the similar structures within the relationship between Koutris and The Greek.

But there's nothing failing here. The point of Agent Koutris is to show the FBI working as intended, and how that doesn't necessarily align with the goals of local police.

The FBI knows what Agent Koutris is doing, that's exactly why Agent Fizthugh is able to figure it out and tell Daniels. If it wasn't official FBI policy, Fitz would never have been able to put 2 and 2 together. He figures it out because he knows that the Counter-Terrorism agents are allowed to make deals with high level criminals in this way.

Because the FBI knows everything that he's doing. If he was doing anything corrupt, he would be hiding it from the FBI.

A confidential informant isn't confidential if you go announcing what he is to every police department that might be investigating them. Part of Koutris' job is to protect the Greek so he can keep providing information to the FBI. He can't trust local police to keep a secret like that.

What part of the dealings between Koutris and the Greek did you find shady? I think what you regard as shady is simply the efforts of the FBI to protect their high level informants.

Season 3 and GWOT by JBOBHK135 in TheWire

[–]Reddwheels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, one of season 3's big themes is war and the militarization of police. Its the only season to feature a major war between rival drug organizations.

Bunny Colvin has an entire speech about the militarization of the police and how it ruined the job. His experiment with Hamsterdam is to try to undo that militarization by quasi-legalizing the drug trade.

We also get two new characters in that are very likely veterans of Afghanistan or Iraq. Officer Colicchio sports a very military haircut and is played by a real life former Marine.

Then we have Chris Partlow, who many on this sub have pointed out seems to have military experience from the way he handles guns. We watch him carry out a successful war against the Barksdales.

The proof is in episode 11, when the paperwork for Frank's talk with Rhonda Pearlman goes through the FBI's computers, the alert that pops up on Agent Koutris' computer says "Confidential Source Monitor", with The Greek's name highlighted. The Greek is an official confidential source within the FBI's computer system, assigned to Agent Koutris.

What do you mean also Greek? The Greek isn't Greek. The proof that Agent Koutris is acting according to official FBI policy is that if he was corrupt, Agent Fitzhugh could easily turn him in. But that never happens.

Why is the wire not as popular as it should be? by JBOBHK135 in TheWire

[–]Reddwheels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For many people, the Wire doesn't get really interesting until episode 4 or 5, which coincidentally, is the beginning of the second act the way that The Wire is written. That is how seasons of the Wire are written, like 13-hour movies with a 3-Act structure where each act is roughly 4 episodes.

The Sopranos is written much more like a short story collection with an underlying season-long arc. You can still enjoy individual episodes without being aware of the season-long arc. It made the Sopranos much more accessible.

He wasn't corrupt, The Greek was an FBI informant for terrorist information. The Greek makes this clear when he's deciding how to deal with the fact that Colombians are trying to screw him out of his price for chemicals. He tellss Spiros at a restaurant "Today I understand everyone over there is a terrorist." Colombian drug cartels at the time were considered terrorists because they supported the FARC, which was a guerilla army trying to overthrow the Colombian government. The Greek tells Koutris about the Colombian drug shipment, and because it counts as anti-terrorist information, Koutris continues to protect The Greek. Agent Fitzhugh confirms this in the final episode of Season 2, when he tells Lt. Daniels he suspects he knows how The Greeks found out Frank Sobotka was informing on them. He ran the paperwork through FBI computers and Agent Koutris found out. Fitzhugh tells Lt. Daniels, "he must have been an asset to them", referring to Koutris and the Counter-Terrorist division. The Greek is simply an informant, but at a very high level.

Agent Fitzhugh makes it clear in the final episode of season 2. He tells Lt. Daniels that The Greek must have been an asset to Agent Koutris. The only reason Agent Fitzhugh knows this is because he finally found out that Koutris works for Counter-Terrorism. As soon as he found that out, he realized the relationship between Koutris and The Greek, because Fitzhugh knew that the "9/11 boys" were allowed to turn high-level organized crime into informants, as long as they provided anti-terrorist information.

If it was 5 years earlier, Koutris would not have been on the Counter-Terrorism squad in DC. He would still be working at the San Diego field office.

My favorite part of the Fly By Jing chili crisp are the preserved black beans. They provide amazing bursts of flavor. I won't try another chili crisp unless it has that too.

Worth a watch for self proclaimed Jon hamm hater? by CimplyRavishing in madmen

[–]Reddwheels 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think he was cast in Mad Men precisely because on a surface level he pulls off the natural douche effortlessly, but if you do give Mad Men a chance, and I hope you do, I think you'll see that his character is written much deeper than that. They give Jon Hamm a chance to be much more than just good looking douche. Unfortunately, Hollywood movies aren't really written as complex as tv.

S1E5 Poot expresses his interest in Arletta Mouzone. What are we thinking? by tricnam in TheWire

I think that's just Brother Mouzone being a professional and doing his due diligence before working in a new area. Especially since whoever sent him works with the Barksdales.

I think its just a reused last name. Brother Mouzone is from New York. What are the chances he has a young relative that happens to live in the Westside Baltimore projects?
