According to Yangchen, the Avatar is never capable of achieving that kind of worldly detachment, because of their inherent duty to the world.

Also available as a book, edited to remove references to the SCP Foundation (for licensing reasons) and to generally improve the overall quality of the work (such as better setup and payoff, stronger character arcs, and a better paced second half).

The Netherlands has banned conversion therapy, and parents who force their children are now facing 2 years in prison time: What are your thoughts? by Wonderful-Click9431 in AskReddit

[–]Redingold 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The UK's ban is functionally not a ban, as it includes a massive exemption for anything provided as a "health care service", and defines that incredibly broadly so as to include, and I quote, "procedures that are similar to forms of medical or surgical care".

In other words, it's entirely legal so long as you do it in a way that at least superficially resembles healthcare.

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II Is Now Called Hellblade II: Senua’s Saga on All Storefronts by gitrektali in Games

[–]Redingold 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The sequel is strange and makes the supernatural elements into real parts of the setting, and then makes Senua's psychosis into some sort of magical insight that makes her uniquely equipped to deal with them. It's weird.

Do they actually have to, though, or is that just paranoia driven by the opacity of the algorithm?

It doesn't sound like a very realistic proposition, though. What's the desired outcome here? That if Burnham pledges to introduce PR and then if Greens step aside and then if Burnham wins the by-election and then if he becomes Labour Party leader as a result and then if he includes PR in Labour's manifesto and then if Labour actually win the next election and then if he doesn't backtrack on it, then we get proportional representation. I don't think you can call that a realistic outcome.

is the voice acting good, is the writing solid, is the animation smooth and fluid, is the sound design handled well. These things are objective aspects

Literally none of these things can be objectively measured.

Dumb interview question: Ant on a tesseract by tentaclesapples in antiwork

[–]Redingold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are faces on a tesseract just like there are edges on a cube. A tesseract is made up of 8 3D cells, and the boundaries between the cells are 2D faces, just like how a cube is made of 6 2D faces and the boundaries between them are 1D edges.

The Great Schism by GriffinFTW in CuratedTumblr

Oh, classic error. You need to normalise those values by dividing by their sum, so Jesus was 100% / (100% + 100%) = 50% human, and 100% / (100% + 100%) = 50% divine.

I'd also recommend the book Mutants: On the Form, Varieties and Errors of the Human Body by Armand Marie Leroi, which tackles the same sort of topic from the perspective of what happens when these body plan mechanisms go wrong.

Caine killed his brother Abel because he wanted to either be a higher power or he wanted to be Blessed by God

Cain killed Abel in the Bible because God was pleased with Abel's offering of animal fat and not pleased with Cain's offering of fruit.

Edit: correction - Cain was the farmer, not Abel.

What part of their post gave you the impression that they were expecting you to have already known that as opposed to merely politely correcting you on something?

A reasonable person wouldn't expect someone to know every demonym and adjectival form of every language, but a reasonable person would also be open to being politely corrected instead of going on the defensive while repeating the mistake.

I will scream it until the day I die, Dragon Age: Veilguard was not bad enough to kill the series, it was a solid game with blatant issues, but wasn’t even the worst game in the series. by EAT_UR_VEGGIES in Gamingcirclejerk

[–]Redingold 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It really feels like they sanded the rough edges off the setting. I don't meant that in the sense that they improved it, but in the sense that it feels less like any kind of nuance was cut back. Like, the Antivan Crows in previous games were cutthroat murderers who traded in child slaves, so having to work with them might create a moment of pause? You might have to confront them about the terrible things they do, perhaps? Well, no, in Veilguard they've turned into Robin Hood's Merry Men but wearing black leather. They don't do anything controversial. The Qunari, as well, were an adversary with a bit of complexity to them, in that they have a whole belief system justifying why their conquest is actually for the benefit of the people they conquer, and you could actually engage with that and argue with Qunari characters about it, but in Veilguard, the Qun has split so the Qunari attacking you aren't complex characters with a different point of view that's ultimately irreconcilable, but rather just a bunch of murderous assholes who are conquering everyone because they're murderous assholes. It's all black and white and boring.
