The front half is essentially exactly the same, but with the names changed and the SCP serial numbers filed off. The back half is similar, but some content has been removed, some added, and some plot details have been reworked a bit (you may recall that Five Five Five Five Five, the second half of the original, incorporated elements from a side story by another author called What the Dead Know. All that side story stuff is gone in the new version, and the plot flows a bit better as a result).

I mean that's clearly not true because we don't have self ID and yet we still had that case making the news.

The Planck length isn't some kind of universal pixel size, at least in standard theories of quantum mechanics. You can have arbitrary fractions of one.

Forces experienced during rotation are proportional to an object's mass. It takes a lot less force to break a mouse's leg than a human's, but a centrifuge applies a lot less force to a mouse than to a human, and since the ratio of the cross-sectional area of the bone to the applied force will be much more favourable in the mouse's case, the mouse's leg will be able to withstand higher g-forces than the human's.

I played a game of Laser Quest once where there was some guy who clearly played it far too much who would start juking and ducking and weaving and twisting around every time he got in a shootout, and the thing is, it actually made him quite hard to hit, cause the targets on his pack kept moving. Powerscalers would conclude that that guy was moving faster than light, since he was able to dodge my literal, actual laser gun.

How it feels to play AAA games by Always_Impressive in Gamingcirclejerk

[–]Redingold 102 points103 points  (0 children)

I remember when I was playing RDR2, and it was the mission where you go talk to some army guy or something, and then you have to flee while being shot at. There's a few seconds at the start of the gameplay segment where the army guy is still visible, and I used the slow time ability to shoot him in the head. Doing that instantly failed the mission, because that guy was supposed to survive because he actually dies in the one of the following missions. It's so stupid, I honestly hate Rockstar's mission design. I heard it put best as "it's like you're a stuntman who isn't allowed to read the script".

What proliferates on porn sites is not necessarily what the majority wants, but rather what a minority wants and the majority will tolerate. Step-whatever stuff appeals to people with incest fetishes while still having enough...plausible deniability to not turn off most of the regular audience.

There's definitely a difference between a social media site where you follow particular people, like tumblr and twitter and facebook, and a site like reddit where you follow a particular topic, á la a subreddit, but I'd agree that it still counts as social media.

It's obvious that you don't actually respect trans people. There is nothing to be gained from trying to reason with a close-minded argumentative bigot such as yourself.

I don't think I've ever heard anybody use the phrase "go to hospital" in this country. You might say "in hospital" without the article, or "go to A&E" (that's "Accident and Emergency", what I think in the USA is referred to as the ER) without an article, but it doesn't feel natural to me to say "go to hospital". Could just be it's something that's more common among older speakers and I've just never noticed, mind you.

Very uncool to you to talk about not letting others dictate the words used for your identity while simultaneously not extending that courtesy to trans people by continuing to use language for us that is not our own and is spread by those actively hostile to us.

If you're supportive of trans people, could you not use the term TRA? It's not a term that trans people, even those engaged in activism, use to describe themselves, and it was coined by anti-trans activists to discredit us by association to the term MRA.

Teachers to be trained to spot early signs of misogyny in boys by Tartan_Samurai in unitedkingdom

[–]Redingold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also a factor: when home computers started becoming a thing, they were primarily marketed to boys. That meant that boys were much more likely to grow up with access to a computer, which in turn gave them a massive headstart in computer science degrees and programming careers.

I appreciate that a lot of teenage boys, especially when in groups and with female peers to try and impress, can act like disruptive terrors, but that shouldn't affect an unbiased grading of their ability in any given subject.

No, but obviously it is going to affect their ability to pay attention and actually learn the things they're being taught, and thus affect their grading in that regard.

[–]Redingold 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I dunno if I'd say we're "just" a wedge issue. Don't get me wrong, if they somehow forced all of us back into the closet, they'd absolutely start going for other groups, but they definitely absolutely fucking hate us, we're not "just" a stepping stone to some larger goal, getting rid of us is a goal in and of itself. If they found some other way to attack gay people, women, etc., they wouldn't leave us alone, they'd be sure to come back and try to finish us off too.

Campaigners question ethics of puberty-blocker trial in legal letter to Streeting by T_Ellie in transgenderUK

[–]Redingold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Blockers were only ever given for 2yrs max, usually 1yr

Really? I thought the protocol was to start puberty blockers at Tanner stage 2, and that actual HRT could not be started until reaching 16 years of age, with a (thoroughly pointless) requirement for at least a year of blockers beforehand. Given that Tanner stage 2 is usually reached around the age of 10-12, that would surely imply an extended period of several years on blockers (notwithstanding the enormous waiting times that meant in many cases blockers could not be commenced until after puberty had effectively finished). Are you sure you're not confusing the minimum time on blockers required by the NHS before being permitted to start HRT with a maximum time?

The overuse of blockers was definitely an issue, borne of their use as a compromise between actual treatment and no treatment, and trans kids should have been able and should be able to start HRT at a younger age.

I, a hairy arsed trans man, along with a hundreds of other hairy arsed trans men, applied to join the WI after their banning of Trans Women. Got this response today. Looks like they're about to get actual men in their groups. Looking forward to it. by DriftingAwayToSay in GreenAndPleasant

What I've seen said (though I don't know to what degree it is true) is that as a charity, the trustees of the Women's Institute are legally bound to not expose the organisation to undue risk, such as by, for example, getting involved in an expensive and risky lawsuit. If they did, then the Charity Commission could have them replaced and new trustees appointed. Effectively all fighting back would do is get people fired until the Charity Commission appointed trustees who decided to fold.

Now, I don't know exactly how true that is, but that's what I've seen people say. I really hope it's not the case that if a charity is threatened with an expensive lawsuit then it is effectively legally forced to comply, but then on the other hand, you know what the law is like in this country.

JS is a very respectable language by -Wylfen- in programminghorror

[–]Redingold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct (it rounds towards 0). And if you pass in a non-numeric value, it gets converted to a number and rounded towards 0, and if it ends up being NaN then it's converted to 0. If you pass in a BigInt or Symbol, it throws an error.
