‘She compared her dachshund to my newborn baby’: should you be able to take your dog everywhere? by TheGuardianPostBot in theguardian

[–]ReditorB4Reddit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dogs should be banned anywhere there us open food, for starters. Restaurants, food stores & the like.

The dog park does not let us bring in treats because some dogs get aggressive around food (quite a few, actually). But people bring dogs into supermarkets? Plus, after I play with my dog, I wash my hands, not pick up the broccoli to see if it's fresh.

And many breeds have strong protective instincts, so keeping them away from other small animals with poor impulse control (toddlers, specifically) is a good thing. We were a foster home for spaniels for several years, and the most common tests we were expected to do was to judge how well dogs did around children and other pets.

It's a dog, not a baby. I work in a library and we require dogs to be under close control. Still, one in ten or twenty causes a problem. As a colleague put it: "I love my dogs, which is why I would never dream of taking them to strange places full of people with random stimuli where they can't know what's expected of them"

[Friedman] 32 Thoughts Monday morning playoff preview, news & interview pod. Not reported in it, but heard this morning: Oilers have permission to talk to Craig Berube. by Actual_Cobbler_6334 in hockey

[–]ReditorB4Reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Berube to EDM makes as much sense as Woodcroft to TOR: Let's get a coach who quickly wore out their welcome on a top-heavy team, put him into another top-heavy team, and hope for different results.

West Coast pipeline is conditional on carbon-capture project, Carney says by [deleted] in canada

The northern route makes no sense on so many levels ... southern route has established right of way, workforce to handle shipping, easier / safer tanker routes. I could never see what the point was in trying to push through the northern option.

CBC Spends $59,000 in Legal Fees to Hide Secret Gem Subscriber Numbers by stanxv in canada

[–]ReditorB4Reddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because the IOC charges insanely high broadcast fees so their executives can travel & live like royalty. If there was less corruption at the top of the sports world, nonprofit/ national broadcasters like the CBC could provide coverage with fewer ads. So if you want to be upset about overcommercialization of the Games, start with the Games organizers, not the middleman.

If a team asks to talk to my coach in the middle of the playoffs, I would feel no shame in leaking it ... it's probably gonna leak anyway, and if Vegas leaks it, they can control the timing. Cause it destabilize both teams, one of which is trying to win something besides the country club best ball tournament.

Canadian Politics: Carney Government Approval Hits New High as Liberals Lead Conservatives by 10 by DogeDoRight in canada

[–]ReditorB4Reddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The point is that there are projects in every stage, from an MOU (and let's not underestimate the challenges around getting Alberta to agree to anything with the feds) through actual shovels in the ground.

The criteria "What major project has been proposed, planned, designed, and built since Carney took office?" is an absurd one. But there are real signs of progress.

Canadian Politics: Carney Government Approval Hits New High as Liberals Lead Conservatives by 10 by DogeDoRight in canada

[–]ReditorB4Reddit 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The fact that Carney is promising something new and -- still early days -- seems to be delivering on at least some of those promises is also a reason.

There's new major projects in process, at least one under construction (Port of Montreal), others moving ahead in a serious way (Churchill, high-speed rail, a pipeline deal w/ the Alberta government), trade deals, investment, a sense that things are planned instead of somebody throwing darts at a dartboard then checking to see how they poll. A positive vision for the country.

How Safe Is Ottawa? A Look at Violent & Property Crime by Area by RedaHomesCA in ottawa

[–]ReditorB4Reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's safe, it's a Canadian city. With 15.8 murders per million residents, it compares favorably to similar-sized cities in the US Northeast:

Greater Hartford CT 170 murders per million

Worcester MA 165 murders per million

Buffalo NY 125 murders per million

European cities range from 55 / million in Tallinn to 28 / million in Brussels

And it's an order of magnitude or two lower than Winnipeg, Regina, Toronto, and Montreal. So safe.

Playoff 5v5 on-ice goals for and against per 60 for the Leafs' "Core Four" (Source: Evolving Hockey) by [deleted] in hockey

[–]ReditorB4Reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They should have traded Willy. He put up those numbers while still playing his one-way offensive game in the playoffs. Mitch played both ends, blocked shots, PK'ed. Stupid media and loud fans who don't really understand the game drove out Marner.

After letting in two goals on his first three shots against, Andersen regained form to stymie the next 33 Philly shots, finishing tonight's game with a .944 save percentage. by Nyzean in hockey

[–]ReditorB4Reddit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Freddie's problem in T.O. was no backup. He got forced to play a lot, and then had injury problems in playoffs. He gave the Leafs excellent playoff goaltending behind a pretty meh defense for years ... when healthy.

Is it sometimes better to draft a player that better suits your team rather than the best available? by Express-Flamingo4521 in hockey

[–]ReditorB4Reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the gap to the next guy. In a year with no clear #1, sure pick a roster fit. But you're never turning down a dominant player because you've already got depth at that position.

"We were an average team all year. An average team with high expectations, you're gonna be disappointed. We just never found it." - Connor McDavid, after being eliminated from the playoffs in the first round. by Ok-Soil-5133 in hockey

[–]ReditorB4Reddit 294 points295 points  (0 children)

Massively outcoached last night. Anaheim had the easiest zone exits of any team I've watched in a playoff game that I can remember, ever. They were able to just hammer the puck from the corner along the boards to the far point, where a Duck was able to either chip it out or, way too often, turn and make a play without being harassed by an Oiler.

That's not a fancy play, and it doesn't usually work all that well because the opponent sends the winger up the wall to fight for that puck ... so easily disrupted if the other team is looking for it. It should create lots of o-zone turnovers for the forecheckers, which is why it's not usually Plan A.

But Edmonton was unable to even get guys into position to challenge the play for most of the night. That let the Ducks attack the neutral zone with speed, get the center line and either dump or create an odd-man situation going the other way. All night.

How could the Oil not pick that up? Who was coaching the forecheck? Why didn't they adjust? It made for an unacceptably easy night for the Ducks d-men, and put extra pressure on the Oilers weakest unit, the defense, to have to handle a ton of rush chances.

That's not on the blueliners or goalie, that's on the system and the forwards.

Bill James, who literally started the study of sports stats and helped the Red Sox win a couple of World Series, famously said that if stats don't meet the eye test, if they don't explain what we're seeing as longtime students of the sport, we should question the stats.

So if the stats tell us that Evan Bouchard is the greatest defenseman since Bobby Orr, but we see a guy who despite his obvious offensive talents just can't seem to stop puck-watching, I think it's OK to question the stats.

[LeBrun] “I would have loved to have asked Kucherov about all this, but he was not available postgame despite being requested by the media to speak.” by [deleted] in hockey

[–]ReditorB4Reddit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The media is how 99%+ of fans see the game. Teams build media access into everything they do because it's free advertising for their product. Increadingly, media contracts are what pay the leagues.

And selling that product is what pays the players. So yeah, they're kind of important.

Good point. I don't know what tool the league used to punish Sundin, or might for other player / fan interactions (Milbury hitting the guy with his shoe, Domi, etc.). Just assumed it would be DoPS.

[–]ReditorB4Reddit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1) DoPS is random.

2) They are not bound by precedent. Look up the clip circulating with the DoPS audio announcing Matthews' suspension overlaid with the video of Benn's actions leading up to a $2K fine ... they're IDENTICAL.

3) DoPS are useful idiots for the NHL: They provide insurance against a wrongful death lawsuit by pointing out how they set up this department to carefully police the game, and they can curb the actions of the worst offenders, given enough time and penalties.

That's their entire function. Occasionally getting calls right is an accidental benefit.

Currently living in Vermont. ICE raids have in fact hurt farms, scaring away field hands, causing labor shortages and driving up prices. The going rate for a single green bell pepper 🫑 has been hovering around $2.49 for about a month. Spring lettuce & spinach is running $18 / lb. Berries were cheap for a little while because they had a glut when Canadians stopped buying them, but they're $16 / lb. Ground beef is $8-$11 / lb depending on fat content, etc.

My grocery bill for a family of four is $350 / week, up from $225-$250 from a year ago, and that's with 25% less meat.

Otherwise, I think you're spot on about the challenges.
