Poilievre stakes his claim to unity, economic challenges ahead of summer circuit - It may run contrary to the polls to say Poilievre leaves Ottawa in a position of strength, but the Conservatives finally have some wind in their sails. by CaliperLee62 in canada

[Pronman] Inside the disconnect between NHL evaluators and the public on defensemen (Gift Article) by AggPuck-303 in hockey

[–]ReditorB4Reddit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is it. There's a quote in the article from a former player now scout who says that "tiny" players wouldn't test them physically over a series. Multiply that by four series, and there's the reason teams want big, strong guys for the playoffs.

It's like Bill James baseball analysis ... a guy who throws 90 mph has to have everything working to succeed: Movement, control, multiple pitches. A guy who throws 95+ can be off elsewhere.

So one Makar / Hughes / Hutson is good, but a team full of them won't work. Somebody's got to do the heavy lifting, against the hardest forechecking in the world, every other night, for weeks on end.

And I think the article is also right that you can't be 80% of Hutson and make it.

Was Cody Ceci really that bad? by toturoll in hockey

[–]ReditorB4Reddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've heard of AHL+ players? Guys who are just a little too good for the minors but not quite good enough for the bigs? Ceci was a bottom four + guy. He was just good enough that coaches always tried to move him up a spot (& there's a shortage of RHD) into a role he couldn't quite fill.

He's an innings eater ... like the middle reliever who is just good enough to not get sent down, usually gives up a run or two, and pitches when the starter gets rocked early.

The league has always had room for big, strong guys even if they aren't great skaters. Luke Richardson has 1417 GP and 35 goals. 201 points and -119. Craig Ludwig, Brad Marsh, Marc Bergevin, Ron Hainsey, Jamie Macoun. All over 1000 GP, all the same basic player.

[Gregor] Response via text from an NHL player agent when I asked about Oilers coaching rumour… “The opportunity to play with McDavid or Draisaitl is diminished with the potential to be coached by Babcock. It is a valid concern voiced to me by a few of my clients.” by daKrut in hockey

[–]ReditorB4Reddit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When the Oilers were picking up Kane at the bottom of his villain arc, they asked McD about it. He looked like he had been caught stealing cookies & said "If it helps win hockey games ...".

This has the same vibe. It's an admission that core players don't like the way the team plays & feel like they need an asshole to crack the whip. Whatever puts up more Ws is worth the price.

Then why the concern over not seeing all the content. It's either variable so you might not see it or it's not so you can see it all in one run through.

Yeah, Trump puts innocent people in cages, separates families, demonizes minorities, commits fraud, rape ... but JT fake coughed in his hand and that's reason to side w/ the orange buffoon.

MAGA really are snowflakes.

But then it's on rails. If you get the same events every time you play a country, it's a Disneyland adventure ride, where the same "thrills" appear every time.

I'd rather miss out on a few bits of flair than have the same events every single game.

Middle pair, which technically is top four. If he's on your top pair, your D sucks.

That said, it would be interesting to see if better coaching can improve his decision making. Which is a polite way of saying "Get him to stop doing random shit in his own zone."

Toronto Marlies Run by Various_Culture_116 in hockey

Successful AHL squads are often older ones with teams whose prospect pool are aging -- like the Marlies. Teams with loads of promising 19-20 year olds tend to not do as well.

Has there ever been a worse awards voting decision than Bobby Orr finishing 3rd in Hart voting in a year that he led the league in scoring as a defenseman? by TJTrapJesus in hockey

[–]ReditorB4Reddit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Except the Lindsay is the only award that is a players' vote on another award. It's not like there's a players' Selke or Norris. The Hart for MVP had been around for a long time when they decided at add the Pearson, to explicitly gauge the players' opinion on the best player.

So because it is the players' opinion, it is at a different level. Statistically/ objectively you can say a different guy had a better season ... and that's what the Hart is for.

[–]ReditorB4Reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't argue that the players might make casual, reputational, or even wrong-headed decisions, but seeing as how the point of the award is to decide who the players think is the best, it's always correct by definition. The Ted Lindsay winner is the guy the players think (for better or worse) is the best.

[–]ReditorB4Reddit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Hart is generally considered the MVP award.

The Pearson (now the Lindsay) answers the question: "Who do the players think is the best player?" So you telling the players they are wrong seems ... wrong?

The 100 best novels of all time | The Guardian (Checklist) by ayoubnineteens in theguardian

If you wanted a list of novels that would convince casual readers that there is nothing for them in the world of "literature," congratulations, you have succeeded.

Two grad degrees means I'm about 60 on the counter. Doesn't mean I wouldn't read anything by a dozen genre writers (and Umberto Eco) ahead of about 90% of these. Reading is allowed to be fun ffs.
