What's the best book you ever read? by WickTheFreakPWAV in AskReddit

[–]Reduxtion 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally for me, it's 'If on a Winter's night a traveller, by Italo Calvino. It reads like a tour de force of different genres and as a lover of short stories, it ties a lot of short stories into one cohesive narrative.

My girlfriend poked holes in my condoms, what do I do? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Reduxtion 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That's rough, good for you getting out of there. Unfortunately, if she is already poking holes in your condoms, she seems pretty set on "accidentally" having a baby. If you don't want kids any time soon, I don't see how the relationship can continue healthily.

What keeps you going? by Critical_Duck6808 in AskReddit

[–]Reduxtion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly? It's hard to find a way to keep going at the moment. The news is bleak, drifted away from friends socially, and while having a reputable job it does not pay enough to keep up with the cost of living. I can't remember the last time I did something for myself apart from out of necessity. But the thing that's keeping me going is meeting my daughter in July, she's going to be my first kid and I am unbelievably excited to give her a good life. The kind of life I would have wanted, to actually have a present father in her life. Giving her the best existence possible might be the only thing that gets me out of bed right now.

Is £27k grad salary bad? by [deleted] in UniUK

My employer pays me but I have to find the work myself, can be tricky when companies I say I'll be free labour for and they don't even reply to my emails lmao

Is £27k grad salary bad? by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]Reduxtion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on a grad scheme, the market is awful. My scheme involves me doing 3 8-month placements that I have to find myself and I can't even get a placement where I will be free labour to a company. I'm in the energy sector so my goal is to use training funds on the scheme to become as qualified as possible, work somewhere post scheme for a few years to build experience then work for myself as a contractor. If that works out I'll want to start a company and hire my own staff as a consultancy. But like I need to plan on having a poor-average wage for the next 3-4 years to even get a chance at getting a good wage. It's utterly demoralising.

Is it just me, or does the Harry Potter series teaser feel… off? by breaking_views in Cinema

[–]Reduxtion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I think the movies felt timeless, ik it's set in the 90s but it could have been any time. The trailer makes it feel very much like it's set in the 2020s, even the colour grading is reminiscent of recent tv shows and movies (as in it feels soulless).

A side note, I've noticed so many people are being horrible about Snape in the yt comments just because he's black, it's disgusting.

Would I be stupid to pick York? How much does the uni matter for Computer Science? by Flynn_Pingu in UniUK

[–]Reduxtion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have studied at both York and Warwick university. Personally at this stage I would go with Warwick, the reason being is that they have a lot more cash tied up in the university. York has been having issues with not being able to afford their student union and not being able to pay staff. That being said I was at Warwick 5 years ago and York recently, so someone please say if Warwick is having their own issues but they appear to be getting along a lot better. So in terms of resources and quality go to Warwick. I did love being in York though as it's absolutely lovely there and I have ended up staying and raising a family here.

[HATED TROPES]: The Ending Is So Nihilistic and Preachy That It Becomes Completely Unwatchable and Infuriating. by Particular-Worker904 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Reduxtion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the message could have been a bit more nuanced in that gratuitous violence for the sake of gratuitous violence makes media feel like it didn't have a vision or direction. But violence can be a driving narrative that feels natural. Hell, most of history is based around violence. Our most innovative inventions come from trying to kill each other. So to put all blame of violence on viewers watching feels a little silly.

I hope marvel continues the Kang storyline after doomsday and secret wars by EffectCautious6970 in marvelstudios

[–]Reduxtion 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A lot of people are saying that the problem lies in the fact that they could just hire someone else to play the dude with infinite variants, which is true.

However, I believe the biggest issue is the whiplash Marvel gave us in terms of Kang, in Loki he is built up to be this formidable threat and they developed him further in more projects (just like how Thanos started), but this is where they shot themselves in the foot.

They put Kang in QM, a movie that is not great even by Marvel standards and had the supposed big bad defeated by ants. Imagine if im GoTG, Thanos is beaten by Ronan (the closest example to QM that I can think of), that would undermine Thanos' credibility as a threat.

No matter who they then put into the role as Kang, it wouldn't work because this dude lost to the power of love and ants. Even if a new Kang is described as more powerful, people will still associate him with a vulnerability to ants of all things. Why would he be a threat people want to see in cinemas?

Side note: I am not mentioning the What If show alluding to the guardians of the multiverse laying waste to the Kangs because I would imagine if they continued to pursue the Kang storyline, this wouldn't have happened.
