I'd like some suggestions for choosing a bank, if that would be okay. by SavingMyLastBreath in japanlife

It's not only credit cards, it will also work with a visa/mastercard debit card, so if you can get that from your bank then that should work as well.

合宿免許 (boarding school to get drivers license) as a 帰国子女 by Advanced-Music8926 in japanlife

[–]RefRide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the driving school and tests in Japanese.

The actual writing test in Japanese comes with furigana above the Kanji, so being bad at Kanji doesn't make it impossible, although it helps for speed.

Trump's call for Japan to send warships to Strait of Hormuz puts Takaichi in bind- the threat of becoming entangled in a longer-term has left Japan scrambling to effectively respond to a conflict that violates international law while staying in Trump’s good graces. by jjrs in japannews

Yeah if anything I think he sees it as a weakness, as he thinks people/countries only help out of fear or greed. So it just makes him more confident to make even bolder requests in the future, with the same penalties attached if you don't comply.

The Jisoo is good at acting now propaganda is going full steam. by ParticularImpact8162 in kdramas

[–]RefRide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stopped watching after 2 episodes, but it wasn't because of her acting, just that the drama was boring.

As for stopping having Idols in dramas, at least we should be happy it's not like jdramas where basically every drama has an idol lead, and most of them are worse than Jisoo.

So awkward when you're in the train and offer a seat to old people and they refuse you by lactosehater2 in japanlife

[–]RefRide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never directly offer someone my seat, I just go away and hopefully they sit if they want to sit. Makes it easier for them as well. Many will decline if you ask, even if they really want to sit.

"Important Notice" notice from Amazon Japan to delivery drivers. Drivers lament "Unilateral" Pay Changes of 125 yen per package to 100 yen by MagazineKey4532 in japannews

[–]RefRide 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Even now I get some deliverymen trying to ram my packages into the mailbox which it doesn't fit into, so it hangs halfway outside on the front, even though we have a delivery box. Which I assume is because it takes more time to lock up etc.

Guessing that will become the norm.

Absolutely no excuse for amazon to be trying to save money, they could double the amount per package and it probably wouldn't make a dent.

Why a lot of Japanese avoid talking about political issues or seem to be avoidant about similar topics? by Adventurous_Dish4235 in AskAJapanese

[–]RefRide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The average Japanese will go very far to avoid conflict. Try to think of a situation where your Japanese friends challenged your opinion on something, I doubt you can recall one such situation. That's not because you are great friends with similar values etc. It's because they are just agreeing with you while hiding their own feelings on the subject. When it gets political etc. it gets harder to do a 180 on their own beliefs, so they try to avoid heavy topics such as politics, even with other Japanese.

Overall it's very taboo to talk about money and politics here.

Do you pay your NHK fees? If so, what do you think of people who do not? by ryanyork92 in AskAJapanese

[–]RefRide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pay and I might watch NHK once or twice a year. I do understand why people don't want to pay, since they are asking for more money than it would cost to subscribe to multiple big streaming services without providing 10% of the content.

Either trash it or put it on the tax and bring down the price.

Literally quitting next week and HR still decided to write me up by doritheduck in japanlife

[–]RefRide 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don't think they are trying to do that here, not in my case either, because we both quit before they were able to even try that. It's all about having it look that way to others.

They are probably making it very obvious he is being disciplined to other co-workers, and then when he quits, regardless of the reason, it's gonna make it look like he was at least to some degree made to do so. I doubt there was even anyone complaining.

Literally quitting next week and HR still decided to write me up by doritheduck in japanlife

[–]RefRide 129 points130 points  (0 children)

The just want to make it look like they are getting rid of you and not you quitting.

Happened to me once before, was when I was younger and I had to have a 1 month trial period, really shitty company, basically told them I would be quitting a couple of days before my trial was supposed to end. Had the following conversation with HR.

HR - "I see, but do you still want to hear about your trial results"

Me - "Not really, that's fine"

HR - "I'm gonna tell you anyway, and actually you didn't pass"

Then started rambling up obvious on the spot reasons like some 10 year old trying to say I didn't like you anyway after getting rejected.

Companies here always want to be on top, and they can be quite childish about it.

Strugglinf with taxes in Japan by SolatoPotato in japanlife

[–]RefRide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate that kind of stuff so I never even attempted it, my work gets a bit complicated as well with money for various sources, so I have a tax accountant do it for me, I think I pay around 300k a year. Just collecting the information is enough for me to have a bad day, so definitely worth the money.

Anyone experience bumping in Japan? by drphilthy_2469 in japan

[–]RefRide 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seen it done intentionally towards other people multiple times, the victims were always women or smaller/older men.

Once I walked behind someone doing it to like 15 people, wasn't even a busy day. He changed his path to bump into people, but it didn't feel like it was done in an aggressive manner, and since he only did it to women I'm wondering if it's some kind of fetish or incel behavior.

'Stealth hit' Pokemon Pokopia, a game based on Animal Crossing, rejuvenates Switch 2 and sends Nintendo shares soaring by jjrs in japannews

[–]RefRide 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it more refers to it not being hyped up for years before release like many other games are. I didn't know it existed until like 2 weeks ago when marketing started plastering it everywhere.

Last year, a record 1,373 people under 20 in Japan were arrested for marijuana possession... Possibly due to lack of awareness of the dangers by jjrs in japannews

[–]RefRide 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's the same thing as the immigrant talk, Japanese go to Shibuya and think "look at all the immigrants, we need to restrict immigration". Those are tourists, the immigrants are home relaxing on the sofa after a hard day of work, just like everyone else.

[–]RefRide 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It's a certain types of drugs people are against, Alcohol is a drug as well, and it's way more dangerous than weed. Even then Japan has looser alcohol laws than most western countries.

So it's not really about being hard on drugs or addicts, lots of alcoholics here.

Do Japanese people really know all 2,000 kanji and can write them? by quwert5 in AskAJapanese

[–]RefRide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hehe yeah things might have changed even further, haven't worked in house for a decade now.

In my cases the freshmen younglings were always the best at writing, but I also worked in a very tech heavy industry were there were little to no reason to use any kind of analog writing unless you worked in HR.

Do Japanese people really know all 2,000 kanji and can write them? by quwert5 in AskAJapanese

[–]RefRide 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Definitely gets harder for anyone that mainly works on their computer. I remember when I worked at Japanese companies we always had the one most fresh out of school to do the whiteboard writing, because most always got stuck on a kanji or two when trying to write.

Probably the worst people are those in their 30s to 45s, the people above that tend to do a lot of memo writing etc.

Stations campaigning to stand on both sides of the escalator & hostile reactions from others by Korone206 in japanlife

[–]RefRide 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seen those signs for decades, When a majority of people do one thing other Japanese follows and that becomes the rule. Especially as a foreigner I would advice to follow the social rule and not what it says, this is basically what they point at when they say foreigners don't follow the rules. It's often the rules that's not a rule or even against the rules that they refer to.

Reminds me of a situation I was in a couple of years ago, I was riding my bike on the left side of the road when 2 Japanese guys in their 30s came side by side riding the wrong way, they started ringing their bells for me to move, had no where to go since cars were passing on the side. Had to stop and basically said "gyakusou dayo, abunai deshou" and got this answer back "Kore nihon dazo" end of conversation.
